She does accept a donkey, however, unaware that its saddlebags are full of gold and precious jewels. Ato Jib, the Lord Hyena, mocks the child's simple gift, but when he sees the richness of her reward, he hurries to the Nigus to present all his lands and cattle?and receives the perfect orange in return. Araujo's straightforward style is well suited to the simplicity of the story. Although the occasional inserted pronunciations can be distracting, they are certainly useful, as is the glossary. Li's delicate watercolors mesh well with the text. The earth-toned illustrations sweep across the pages, and are touched with brighter colors and intricate details. The human characters are a little stiff, but the hyena, muffled in his white robe, sparkles with mischief. An author's note identifies the oral source of the tale. This book is a perfect illustration on what a pure gift a child is and how innocent a child's heart can be. It teaches a few good life lessons and also incorporates a small amount of language from Ethiopia. We bought this book to introduce Ethiopia into our family for our small children while we wait to adopt a child from Ethiopia. This book is a must have for any child regardless of color, it is just a simple yet valuable story.

My daughter, who joined our family by way of Ethiopia, enjoys reading this book very much. It's a wonderful story and the illustrations are very different. They are drawn in a way that pulls you into the tale and conveys a sense of motion. Finally, the story has a terrific message.

Gift for granddaughter.

My brother adopted a little boy from Ethiopia and so I was excited to find this story to buy him for him to read to his son. The tale is beautiful and has wonderful meaning. The illustrations are absolutely beautiful!

I read this book first to 2nd grade, then to 5th grade, both loved it. Its a great story. I had a 7th grader read it to the 3rd grade too!

I am of Ethiopian heritage and wanted to find some books to read to my daughter. Randomly came upon this book and I'm so glad I did. What a wonderful tale with a great message. I really enjoyed the illustrations, such wonderful colors that remind me of back home. Bravo Dr. Araujo!

his is an excellent history of the Spanish conquest of Peru and its aftermath. Detailed history of Inca resistance and initial losses. It was a much hard fought colonization than usually presented in history books. Give lush detail on the activities of the later Inca emperor in their struggle to rid themselves of the Spanish. The one drawback is that MacQuarrie give little ;credit to the Indian allies of the Spanish. He makes it sound like a small band of Spanish on horses fended off hundreds of thousands of the Incas and there allies in one siege that last for more than a year. At the same time, it is clear that the Incas had powerful native enemies. This part of the story is hardly convincing. Otherwise it is a great read,

This is a great overview of the Incas after their first contact with the Spanish. I picked up this book after traveling to Peru as I was just fascinated by everything Inca when I was there and realized how little I knew. I would recommend you read this book BEFORE you go to Peru if you are going; picturing thousands of warriors standing atop Sacsaywaman fighting 100 Spanish knights, and being able to see the walls they stood on would be breathtaking.Sadly, this book really only focuses on the Spanish conquest, but this is not the fault of the author. The lack of writing, and the ruthless culling of all things local by the Spanish after their arrival, means that the specifics of the Inca's history is incredibly sparse pre-conquest.Definitely a great book to read if you are interested in the Incas.

I am amazed at the level of detail in this book right from the first footsteps in the foreign land. Incredible read that places you in the heart of historical battles and conquest as if you were there. One such battle, puts 200 Conquistadors (and slaves) against an Inca army of 20,000 warriors the author puts you in the very heart of the battle so you can not help but feel the rising panic in your throat as you read.A Very well researched book that explores not only the differing cultures but highlights mans unflinching avarice and greed, often becoming more savage than the "savages" being conquered in the name of a God the inca never could comprehend or understand.

I do recommend this book but there are two issues I have:1. The author basically exonerates the Incan leadership of any blame for the defeats by Pizarro. Of course no one can know how long the Incans could have held out against a continuous onslaught of Spanish over time, but better leadership from Atahualpa and Pizzaro is an unknown person in history. The Incans like the Romans got a Commodus when they needed a Marcus Aurelius...2. The author does not do a very good job of showing the exploitative structure that was the Incan Empire. For sure the Incas had better government than the Aztecs, but it was still a very exploitative structure...in fact, the encomienda system was very similar to the Incan system.All this said, this is overall a very good book and I would highly recommend it.

This is an excellent book, and does a superb job in detailing the last years of the Inca Empire. Kim has done a marvellous job in bringing the last years of the Inca Empire. I had read about this vaguely, but this brought a whole new world to life.He has been balanced in his approach, and while he undoubtedly indicts the Spanish for their appalling behaviour, he does, subtly, show that they were brave (but, cruel) men, who had no respect for the Inca culture. This is, however, not restricted to the Spanish. The English did not respect Indian culture when they came into India. My own countrymen have been guilty of similar transgressions, I am sure, when the South Indian kings spread Hindu culture in South Easy Asia. This does not excuse the Spaniards, however.The last days have been brought to life in a manner that is sad, exciting, tragic all rolled into one. Yes, I agree with the reviewer "CJA' in that he could have spoken about how the Spanish subsequently tried to stamp out the Inca culture, but I would not have traded this for the tale of how the ruins were discovered.All in all, a marvellous book.

Kim MacQuarrie provides a well-written, and engaging telling of the first Spanish incursions into Peru, from the Extremadura origins of the Pizarro family, to the execution of Atahualpa and beyond. I picked this up because I was planning a trip to Peru, and, specifically, Lima, Cuzco, Machu Picchu and Puno. At halfway through the book, I've learned a great deal about the pre-Colombian societies that pre-dated the rise of the Inca, the story of the rise of the Inca, the complicated succession struggles among Inca royalty, the Spanish designs on manipulating the Inca leaders to increase their wealth and gain social standing and so forth. The tale is a bloody one, but MacQuarrie tells it well, and gives a thorough accounting of all the major players. The book comes complete with illustrations and quotes pertinent to each historical period. I strongly recommmend this as a read for someone with little to no knowledge of Peruvian history.

Winged Pursuit is a smooth continuation from where First Spell ended. Isadora and her brother Nando have made it to the Academy. However it is not safe there as they are attacked by the evil sorcerers and her brother is kidnapped. Clara and a few others jump on Humbert (the red dragon)(I just love dragons) and pursue the kidnappers in hopes of rescuing Nando. We are also introduced to new characters. As in First Spell, Winged Pursuit is loaded with action, is fast paced, and a real page turner. Lucia Ashta has created an awe inspiring series that should not be missed. Received a copy and this is my voluntary and honest review.

I would recommend this series to everyone who is interested in magic.I didn't want to put this book down and now I can't wait to read the next one! Very engaging, great story line, and wonderful caracters!

It is well written and fast paced. The book seems to end as soon as it begins. So far a good series

Signs that something is inevitable: (a) a favorite author who seems incapable of producing something unless it’s wonderful (Lucia Ashta) comes out with (b) a fantastic new series (Magical Arts Academy), book 1 of which (First Spell) is - no surprise - superb. What inevitably follows? That book 2 would also be superb. No surprise then that such book, Winged Pursuit, is one that I simply could not put down. It was the perfectly plotted sequel perfectly written, and perfectly enjoyable. But for the fact that I’m literally dictating this review to my husband from my hospital bed I could go on and on with praises - the book definitely deserves it. Since I can’t do that I will simply note that the book is most definitely one to read, it is easy to highly recommend. I’m definitely looking forward to the next book in this series.

 "Enchanting Animals" is a fun and cute coloring book of 36 different animal designs. There are animals of the land, sea and air included as well as a few insects. The designs are curated by Inky Balm and are licensed through shutterstock.com. This provides a colorist with the opportunity of buying a single book with a number of artists work included. Otherwise, you might have to buy a number of books to get such a diverse offering. Because of my large collection of coloring books, I have seen a few of these designs in other curated books. I think that the print quality of this particular book is the best I own in this type of animal collection. The lines are even and dark and the designs are centered well on the page. The animals are drawn as line drawings with “doodle” style elements added to make coloring more fun. Some of the designs include a number with intricate and small details.All of the designs stop well before the binding. The designs are printed on one side of thin white non-perforated paper that is typical for books published by CreateSpace. The binding is glued but there is plenty of room for you to cut a page out if you choose to do so. By breaking the spine slightly, I was able to get the book to lay fairly flat in the open position.All of my markers bleed through and my gel pens and India ink artist pens either bleed through or leave a distinct shadow on the back of the page. My coloring pencils work well with the paper though the hard lead pencils do leave an indent at the back of the page. I will use a piece of chipboard or heavy paper behind the page I am working on so I don't ruin the following page with leaking ink.
