Crucial Conversations & Crucial Confrontations are well-written, practical guides for resolving common workplace problems. HIGHLY RECOMMEND them both. It was with excitement then that I purchased Crucial Accountability - only to find that it is word for word the same book as Crucial Confrontations. Buy one or the other.

Love this book. It's a little bit of a long read though. This (in conjunction with Crucial Conversations, the predecessor to this book) saved my family life. I used to be a jerk but now I'm almost tolerable. These people taught me how to converse without interrogating, how to provide opinions without being bossy, and how to influence without being pushy. Seriously--the concepts here changed my life. This one is GREAT for managers because it teaches how to deal with co-workers and subordinates who don't follow through on commitments.

I had to read this for a class and I was dreading it, but I ended up reading almost all of it in one sitting. The authors not only offered good, practical, applicable information, but their writing was pretty good as well. I expected it to be dry and very text-book like, but really it was pretty engaging. It's been a few weeks since I read it and it has proved to be pretty helpful! It's not a magic fix-all for all your relationship problems or anything like that, but its a good tool and resource fro improving how you handle accountability issues in relationships in your personal and professional life.

I didn't catch that the authors had re-titled their existing book, "Crucial Confrontations".I expected something new, LOL.I wasn't offended though because the book is so good.It made an excellent gift.This is the best book I've read on accountability discussions.The "FeedBack Script", podcast by Manager Tools and an old book, "Analyzing Performance Problems", by Mager and Piper are excellent companions to this book. Also S.Covey Sr.'s, discussion about managing by agreement in the 7 Habits really cements one of the hardest things to do when working with people, holding, ONE ANOTHER accountable.God Bless

Definitely good for a number of management basics. Some of it is telling you what you already know (one would hope) mostly because its a lot of common sense and empathy. That said their are a few key takeaways that can be implemented on an individual basis that will make you a better manager and or a better employee.

I wish I had this book years ago! The book brilliantly breaks down the elements of difficult conversations when it's time to hold someone accountable: how to prepare before the meeting, what to look for and discuss during, and how to follow up after to increase the likelihood of success.The books offers the tools, yet it's up to the reader to practice. No matter the difficulty, it is well worth the effort.

Kind of life changing when it comes to having good conversations in the midst of conflict of any kind. Would really recommend! I am reading this with some associates, and it’s really helping all of us already. I would say we are already good at handling conflicts, and this book is still adding extreme value.

Really loved the first couple chapters. Although it seemed too many at times having examples of both work and personal issues helped to frame the concepts well. For me it seemed this book lost a little horsepower after the first few chapters. The concept of accountability comes from an authoritarian view rather than one of mutual benefit. I wish a few more chapters could have been written on personal accountability as I think one needs to master this before attempting to hold others accountable.Good read overall. I would recommend.

About the Author

Marianne M. Jennings, Emeritus Professor of Legal and Ethical Studies, has taught at the WP Carey School of Business, Arizona State University from 1977 through the present. She has six textbooks and four monographs in circulation in the areas of business ethics, ethical culture, and legal environment. She was director of the Lincoln Center for Applied Ethics from 1995 to 1999. Professor Jennings has worked with government agencies, professional organizations, colleges and universities, and Fortune 100 companies on ethics training and culture. She is a contributing editor of Corporate Finance Review and Real Estate Law Journal. Two of her books have been named Library Journal's book of the year. Her books have been translated into three languages. Her book, The Seven Signs of Ethical Collapse, was published by St Martin's Press and has been used as both an audit tool and a primer by numerous organizations for creating and sustaining an ethical culture. In 2011, Professor Jennings was named one of the Top 100 Thought Leaders by Trust Across America and in 2012 she was named one of the 100 most influential people in business ethics by Ethisphere magazine. Professor Jennings served on the board of directors for Arizona Public Service (now Pinnacle West), the owner of the Palo Verde Nuclear Station, from 1987 through 2000. She has also served on INPO's advisory council since 2005. She conducts ethics training and ethical culture assessments for businesses, including Fortune 100 companies, government agencies, professional associations, and nonprofit organizations.

The text is well written and case studies are abundant and disbursed thru the readings. The case studies are relevant and recent, helps to understand ethic policies in today's market.

Review of “Body Language” and “Name Games”BY Michael CraftFour starsI’m thinking about binge-reading the rest of the Mark Manning books by Michael Craft. Having finished the first four in the series, I’m going to review the second two together—what I think of as the start of the “Dumont” books, for the quiet Wisconsin town that becomes the setting for Mark’s life.When Michael Craft began publishing the Mark Manning series in 1997, my husband and I were in the throes of being new fathers. There were no Kindles in the world, and I was also in the process of publishing my own first novel. Gay lit just got away from me.But now, having survived my mid-life crisis because of the world of escape offered to me by my Kindle, and having largely survived the rigors of child-rearing, I am lucky enough to have stumbled across Michael Craft’s landmark series of gay journalist/detective novels featuring Mark Manning.Mark is a bit of a prig. In fact, in his first book, “Flight Dreams,” he really pissed me off. It was very hard to like him. But I persevered, promised by the author himself that Mark got better. And, not surprisingly, I’ve grown quite fond of Mark. For all his affectations, and all of his irritating macho anxieties, he has become real to me. He’s still a bit stiff; something of a codger for a man only 42 (as of “Body Language,” published in 2000). Still a little too proud of being straight-acting for my taste.And yet…I realized, reading “Body Language,” that Mark is my age, calculating for the year of publication. And men my age have a very wide range of stories to tell. We were the first children of Stonewall—too young in the late 1960s to really know what was going on, or to understand fully the potential upside of being gay in a hostile world. Mark Manning and I had quite different paths in life, and I finally came to understand that I had to forgive him for not taking the same route I had taken to middle age. Mark Manning comes out at 39, whereas I became a father. Mark Manning finds love with a man at 39, while I stumbled into it at 20 and was marking two decades with my spouse by 39. Mark and I were both flying blind as children of the sixties. I have to forgive him for having a less direct road than I had.“Body Language” finds Mark returning, literally and in his memories, to Dumont, Wisconsin, a small city (or, perhaps, big town) where his mother’s family were bigwigs. Having something of another mid-life crisis (career-driven, now that his sexuality is settled happily), Mark looks into moving back to a place he only visited once as a nine-year-old; but a place that nonetheless has an unaccountable hold over his memories for a number of reasons that are revealed to us as the story progresses.One always has to let go of a certain demand for reality in reading murder mysteries, because the world of the detective (amateur or professional) is always far more fraught with incident and danger than our own worlds are. Mark’s adventures back in Dumont, from the unlikely reacquisition of a fully-furnished family mansion to a wonderfully tortured murder plot, are evocative of David Brandstetter’s in Los Angeles a generation earlier. One reads avidly, waiting to find out what will happen next; how will our hero figure out the solution to the crime in time to prevent the worst from happening? How will the other characters be affected by the events of the story?But Michael Craft gives us a great deal more. Each book, so far, has stood fairly well alone—because Craft is adept at providing enough backstory to make the whole picture logical for the reader. That said, it is only through reading all of the books in order, as I’m discovering, that we begin to see Manning’s background details filled in, line by line, color by color, to present us with a rich, finely detailed picture against which Manning’s quirky personality stands out in high relief.“Body Language” focuses on Mark’s childhood memories from his long-ago visit to his Uncle Edwin’s Prairie-School style mansion in Dumont—memories that are happy ones in spite of the unknown sorrows the novel uncovers. The thirty-three year gap between his visit and his return have been filled with twists and turns, and Mark has to untangle them, not only to solve the murder, but to build a new life and understand himself better. “Name Games” carries on that leitmotif, drawing on Mark’s hidden memories from his closeted years as a young journalist, memories that finally help him recognize the key to the mystery at hand. He finds himself pulled all the way into local politics and, rather marvelously, into the world of high-end miniaturists—people who obsess about tiny rooms filled with tiny things.And all along, we have Mark Manning’s “Greek chorus.” There’s his old friend Roxanne Exner, power lawyer and femme fatale (I am still forgiving her for what happens in book one, “Flight Dreams”). And, of course, there’s Neil Waite, the rather younger, always out and proud architect, who finally forced Mark to recognize where his heart really lay. Neil shared the center of the first book with Mark; but in the subsequent books he is the moon to Mark’s earth: orbiting closely, but never entirely the center of attention. Neil’s gravity influences Mark in important ways, but it is Mark’s life that causes Neil to change his life. This could be problematic, but Craft is careful to give Neil full agency over his own actions, making Neil the stronger of the two men, even though he is inevitably (narratively speaking) second fiddle to his older partner.The stealthy richness of Craft’s storytelling is in all of the other secondary characters, who quickly become important to the reader’s appreciation of both plot and setting. Doug Pierce, the handsome middle-aged sherriff of Dumont; Thad Quatrain, the angry teenager struggling to find his place in a traumatized family; Miriam Westerman, aging hippy and bellicose feminist, who has more axes to grind than a medieval armorer. These and other characters (for even those that appear but briefly are carefully rendered), create the necessary plot confusion and provide a savory broth for a greatly satisfying tale.If book one centered on coming out, and book two dealt with fidelity and monogamy; the third and fourth books deal with notions of family and parenthood that rock Mark’s world while casting ever brighter light on his psyche and personality. While first and foremost murder mysteries of fascinating complexity, these books are also object lessons in the shifting dynamics of what it is to be gay in America. As I read through them, completely caught up in plot, I was also, in the back of my mind, seeing surprising echoes of my own life story—with different details and, obviously, with murders and other traumas I never experienced.In the end, Mark Manning’s character may appeal more to men of a certain age (i.e. the author’s and my age) than to younger readers. But that is a minor caveat, and I hope younger folks will read these books, because the point of a good murder mystery is the mystery, while the character development (as with Hansen’s David Brandstetter, as with Thornton Marshall’s Nick Nowack) is a bonus that only the most thoughtful and gifted writers can offer us.I have three more of Mark and Neil’s adventures to read. I think I’ll read them right through and let you know how things go.

The first two manning stories were good but the location and story seemed not right.But this one felt like Agatha Christie novel of Tommy and Topuence with a gay them.Very little political emphasise on a political agenda.Problem with most gay character books always the bad guys are some religious or political slant.That's ok sometime but it is a bit limiting and impossible to keep guessing since its clear from the beginning the author detest the character and couldn't bother giving the character a soft side.Most people are not all evil or all good mostly it's fear and indoctrination that twist someone into doing evil things

The series truly hits its stride with Body Language, in voice as well as with the continuing development of the characters. The great thing about rereading this series after a number of years, is knowing I can go straight on to the next book without having to wait!

The writing is clean and after a slow start, the story does get underway, but this felt dated and flat to me. So many of the attitudes made me cringe, and I got tired of hearing about Parker's butt. It was OK, but time has not been kind to this story.

Craft is an excellent story-teller, with an equally good hand at mellifluous prose. But when it comes to the "mystery" genre, this work in particular suffers from too much told too soon to offer much of a surprise by the end. This was not the case with "Boy Toy," which is a subsequent novel, but this novel, "Body Language," has all the mystery wrung out of it. I guessed the identity of the "murderer" by the end of the first part. I recommend Craft's other works, but not this one.

The protagonist is who I would be if I had enteritis wealth, a hot body, and handsome mug. I've read the entire series. Very enjoyable.

BODY LANGUAGE, the third novel in this mystery series is Michael Craft's best so far. Mr. Mark Manning returns, as dapper as ever. He still drinks Japanese vodka with a twist of orange peel, writes only with a Montblanc pen and drives a Bavarian V-8. His lover Neil is still in the picture as is Roxanne, the woman attorney friend of both Mark and Neil. Frustrated because he did not win a coveted Partridge Prize, investigative journalism's highest award, and believing the reason he didn't get the reward he richly deserved is because of homophobia, Manning leaves his job he has held for many years at a newspaper in Chicago and moves to Dumont, Wisconsin and purchases a small but excellent newspaper there. And then all hell breaks loose. A woman relative is killed in Manning's home while the house is full of Christmas guests and he becomes the prim suspect as well as inheriting a fortune from the dead woman, along with custody of her unruly teenaged son.The plot gets quite byzantine and is a little over the top. Mr. Craft, however, certainly takes risks and as always engages the reader in what is going on. His usual sense of humor is here with hooty references to fruitcakes as well as a feminist who organization of women is called "Fem-Snach." The Catholic Church takes as shellacking as well when santimonious priests give "fill-in-the-blanks" sermons, eulogizing people who haven't seen the inside of a church for many years. Finally, your eyes will cross-- in a good way-- because of all the references to khaki-clad butts.So we have a complex plot, characters we care about, and Mr. Craft's usual pitch for gay rights-- his best in this series yet.

I really enjoy Marie's blog and look forward to each new post. She has a real talent and I'm happy she's chosen to share it with us. I must say however that I think someone along the line (publisher?) has done her a great disservice when it come to the Kindle edition of this book.Many of the fractional measurements seem to be images rather than actual text. They are very tiny & fuzzy (yes, even when I make the font size larger because it's an image, not text). This has rendered much of the book useless to me as I just cannot read the tiny, fuzzy pictures that describe the fractional amounts. (Example posted with review)Consequently I'm unable to review this book based on its make-up formulas, as I really cannot read the amounts and therefore not able to make any of the products 😞I think the best solution is they should republish using the correct format and provide it free of charge to those of us that have already purchased it.

Let me just say how excited I am to leave this review. I have followed Marie on her blog for quite some time, and I just adore her passion for diy cosmetics, skin care, and soap. She is witty and clever and her personality is reflected wonderfully in her writing. When this book arrived today, I was giddy with delight as I flipped through all the pages to look at her new recipes. Having made my own makeup for a couple years, I am not a novice but if you are, no worries. There is a plethora of background info on ingredients and techniques so that you can feel very comfortable starting from scratch in developing your own products at home. Marie makes a concerted effort to use as many natural ingredients as possible in her recipes, yet she also develops recipes that are very "professional" and "high end" in nature. In other words, they work! Now that might not seem like a big deal to you, but that's a slippery slope as it's often tricky to not use a bunch of chemicals to achieve long lasting lipstick and mineral makeup. In addition, I can tell she really focused on ingredients that were easy to source. Many of the ingredients you are likely to find locally, but if not, she has an extensive list of stockists and suppliers at the end of the book for customers all over the *world*. Most of the recipes are limited to 10 or less ingredients which also makes these recipes very beginner/budget friendly as who wants to buy 20 different ingredients to make lip balm? Not me! For a more experienced diyer, you can use some of the recipes to tweak or experiment with some of your own recipes. I, myself, have been inspired to play with a couple additional ingredients that I am not currently using. In conclusion, I highly recommend this book at a treat for yourself or a loved one and I can't wait for future books from Marie :)

I was introduced to Marie's work via her blog and had just began making homemade soaps and lotions. As most people, I try to balance products that have ingredients I understand and know aren't bad for you and products that work! I was hesitant to purchase this book and the materials because it's a large initial investment (I spent $50 to get makeup making supplies, but I can make almost everything in the book...I already had many of the oils and such from making soaps and lotion so this was makeup specific supplies). I was worried I would invest and be disappointed with the outcome and have all these weird ingredients.However, makeup making proved to be a success! In about an hour I was able to make a concealer, makeup, and airbrushing powder. I'm in my mid-30s with some large pores and fine lines showing. I found the dry mineral makeup was too dry and settled in my imperfections too much. However add that dry power to the liquid recipe and magic! I loved the coverage. I also found that my face looked great throughout the day. With my store bought makeup I had to reapply every time I was going to go somewhere. I just don't feel this way with this makeup.I also tried both her long-wear and creamy vegan lipstick recipes. Let me say as someone who has always struggled to make lipstick color selections, having the freedom to sit there and tweak my own lipstick color to my liking is a game changer. I used both carmine, brown and red oxides, and a mica for shimmer. In the future I will order ultramarine to allow for some more cool tints. I did feel that the long-wear lipstick was a bit dry: I had to be sure my lips were moisturized before applying for it to work. I loved the creamy recipe...felt like it was doing great things to my lips and providing color!The way that Marie approaches skin care in the book is really nice...she is giving you enough recipes to do a total cleansing, moisturizing, and makeup routine all DIY. I look forward to trying more of these recipes out and possibly being free from the beauty industry...now wouldn't that be amazing ladies?

This is a FABULOUS book! I've searched for books on at-home cosmetic formulation and really found very few and those that I did find looked lacking. Marie's book is a treasure! There are clear directions on formulating and blending colors, different options to choose from if you prefer vegan recipes, and she makes YouTube videos to correspond with things in her book so you can see what she's actually doing. Her website, Humblebee and Me, has oodles more recipes for you to make and valuable information you need for formulating your own cosmetic and personal care products. If you're looking into making your own products, look no further! Marie's book and website are all you need. But be warned....this will become a serious addiction!
