Atkins' Nutritional's Colette Heimowitz has updated their diet regime to put more of an emphasis on hidden sugar avoidance to combine with the 'low card' regime that made Dr. Atkins famous. The book is beautifully laid out - from full color photographs to a very professional presentation of the discussions and recipes. To modernize the program, readers are presented with three plans: Atkins 20, Atkins 40, and Atkins 100 (referring to the amount of carbs in the day). The book breaks down into two parts - Eat Right, Not Less and Let's Get Cooking. The first part's chapters include: The hidden sugar effect, How Atkins works, Let's get started, Atkins your way (20, 40, 100), Living a low-Ccarb and low-sugar Lifestyle (small changes equal big results). The second part of the recipes breaks down as follows: Breakfast, Snacks and sides, Soups and stews, Salads, Appetizers, 15-minute meals, One-pot meals, Just desserts. There are several nicely laid out appendices at the end: Atkins 20, Level 1 acceptable foods, Atkins 20, Level 2 acceptable foods, Atkins 20, Level 2 acceptable foods, Atkins 40, acceptable foods, Products for your low-carb lifestyle, and Scientific studies supporting Atkins 20, 40, and 100.The discussions are what you will find in most diet/nutrition books: watching out/removing hidden and non-hidden sugar foods. Avoiding processed foods. The nutritional, health, attitude benefits of eating better. How to read nutritional labels, dispelling myths of fat, and the importance of vegetables in every meal are covered. Better family eating and tips for eating out.The plans themselves are broken down by how strict a regimen you want or need to create your new lifestyle. The Atkins 20 has the most constraints because you are sticking to only 20 grams of carbs but it will also produce the greatest results. But others may wish to start a less restrictive diet and ease into or out of the other plans. The author recommends that those with over 40 pounds to lose, start with the Atkins 20. Those with less than 40 pounds start with Atkins 40. And for those who want to make smaller changes and start slower, there is Atkins 100.There are suggested plans for eating for the day and then the rest of the book includes the recipes. Each recipes is three color and with numbered small steps. They include net carbs amount, serving size, time (active and total), and calories. A small pull out also lists fiber, protein, fat. A short introduction to each recipe item is included and why that recipe is useful/tasty/its history is discussed. Many recipes have a full page photograph of the final result. The type is huge, each recipe full page and very easy to follow. The ingredients list is in italic and bold font and clearly separated to make them easy to read. In all, the large format of the recipes, large font, clean layout with plenty of white space, use of different colors and italics, make following and creating menu items easy. The author's tone is very no-nonsense and up front. It is written by a clinician who has spent her career working directly with people and their nutritional issues. One important deviation from most modern nutritional programs is that this plan doesn't discourage the use of artificial sweeteners or eating sweet items (many authors today feel that artificial sweeteners, even Stevia, create problematic cravings and prevent people from lowering sweetness values to where they don't need to sweeten everything any more). There is also no discussion of fitness or exercise. The recipes are what you would expect - everything from cinnamon waffles to an apple crumble dessert that doesn't have apples in it. Along with the recipes are guidelines for eating out and how to make the best of various ethnic dinners such as Japanese, Mexican, and Italian. In all, a beautifully presented nutrition book that is easy to follow. Reviewed from an advance reader copy provided by the publisher.

It’s a lifestyle not a diet. Once you realize that you can loose all the weight you need to and keep it off. Take it from me. I lost 125 lbs and then went right back to old habits... hey, the diet is over. Gained 75 lbs back. 16 months ago I decided that “diets don’t work”! Now I live a low carb lifestyle and have lost 100 lbs. I am happier, look good and feel great! Again... it’s not a diet. It’s a lifestyle, and that means for LIFE.

There are so many low carb diets these days, with new ones popping up all the time. After recently looking at a book about the ketogenic diet, I wanted to compare it to Atkins. Because I got to wondering, aren’t all the latest diets like Atkins?I liked how the book started out talking about the sugar in our diet, and even included a list of the sneaky names for sugar that may slip by us because we don’t always know which ones are basically, well, sugar. I was also impressed that Atkins isn’t NO carbs—I saw some foods like whole grain bread and rice mentioned. (Yay!) The book moves on to food labels, grocery shopping and exercise. This is a very complete book. I’ve looked over a lot of diet and nutrition books recently in a personal quest to lose a bit of weight and pick up some healthier eating habits. Most of those books are very repetitive: it takes forever to get past all the stories and paragraphs that basically say the same thing with different words. What I really like about this book is that it is filled with useful information. By page 49 there is already a plan!!!!!Eating out, eating in, packing a lunch—there’s a wealth of information here! And by page 116 we are ready for the recipes. Instead of a book filled with too many words, there are charts and pictures. So I’m thinking, pass up all those low carb books and start with this one.

I've been looking for a decent diet program. I was going to try Keto but read somewhere that Keto was basically just the first stage of Atkins so I thought I would look into it and lo and behold they were releasing a new book. Arrived yesterday and so far it's really good. While I already knew some of the science behind it, it does a really good job of explaining the program for new people and the recipes look good although I do wish they had pictures for every recipe. While an Atkins veteran might not find this worth buying, anyone looking to start their weight loss journey should start here.

Just made the Chicken and dumplings! That bowl was full of comfort food and I gobbled it up! Entire price of book was instantly worth every penny!

Half of the book is about the Akin’s program and the other half is all recipes. I was very please with the recipe section as they are much more user-friendly than any I’ve seen in their books before. I bought it for the recipes.

The recipes are great...I have been a long time Atkins follower and the new program makes it so much easier than ever before.

Positives: The graphics and page layouts are nice.Cons: The first 100 pages are all rehash of the Atkins program. Good info, but not what I was looking for. This is just old info that is being re-wrapped in a pretty bow for those who don't know anything about the Atkins program. The recipes are nothing new as well. Some are so simple they shouldn't require a full-page recipe, but perhaps a page of "what you can do with an egg," for example. Many of the recipes do not have pictures. I am a visual person and like to see what I am cooking should look like.Overall: It is a good sized book, sturdy cover, nice pictures, the print is appealing..............but if you have been working the Atkins plan for a while, you will be disappointed. If you are a newbie, looking for who Dr. Atkins was, the history of the plan and very basic information, then this is the book for you.I am returning mine.

Dr Hollis covers the passage into the middle years, the second adulthood, so throughly and completely it is a wonder this isn't standard reading for all adults! This may be a small book (certainly smaller and more concise than his similar and later work Finding Meaning in the Second Half of Life: How to Finally, Really Grow Up) but it covers the topic so well. It seems especially recommendable to people interested in depth psychology and finding a map to navigate this critical and challenging passage. What I especially enjoy about Hollis is the literate sensibility he brings to his writing (often utilizing appropriate references from literature both old and modern), combined with his wise and welcoming experience of being human (every stage and experience has its place and value.... It's all good when we find it's meaning, and the struggle and suffering make it all the more recognizable and significant. The real problem is our modern culture is lacking in clear guidelines, maps and support from wise elders.... The challenging part is it's up to us here and now to create these essential functions.)This book covers an overview of the four stages/identities humans experience in a complete life (childhood and adolescence, which lead to the second adulthood beginning at midlife, leading to acceptance of mortality in old age). It clearly points out how the first half is about establishing our egos, and fitting in to expectations, while the second is about finding our individual voice and real meaning (the resolutions of often long buried questions). As Hollis says, "if we are fortunate to suffer enough, we are stunned into a reluctant consciousness and the questions return to us again." (Pg 19) I could quote so much more to give a taste of his gentle wisdom, but I will share just one more."During the Middle Passage, the insurgence of the shadow is part of a corrective effort made by the Self to bring the personality back into balance. The key to integration of the shadow, the unlived life, is to understand that it's demands emanate from the Self, which wishes neither further repression nor unlicensed acting out. The integration of the shadow requires that we live responsibly in society but also more honestly with ourselves. We learn through the deflation of the persona world that we have lived provisionally; the integration of inner truths, joyful or unpleasant, is necessary to bring new life and restoration of purpose." (pg. 44)Enjoy.

The eruptions that occur for most of us in midlife are troubling and bewildering: loss of an established identity, depression, boredom, anxiety, perhaps even addiction, and the overwhelming feeling that something is dying and something else needs to be reborn. For some these seismic shifts break out in the stereotypical displays of the midlife crisis (jettisoning relationships and careers, for example) while others stew in quiet desperation and perhaps seek therapy or simply hope the disturbing rumblings will pass. In the author's words, "Anyone in midlife has witnessed the collapsing of projections, of hopes and expectations, and has experienced the limitations of talent, intelligence, and, often, of courage itself."James Hollis, a Jungian therapist with decades of experience as an analyst and teacher, has written this remarkable book which is the best I have seen at elucidating what the midlife passage means and the creative response it demands.Approaching the topic from the rich, poetic, and mystical perspective of depth psychology, Hollis maintains that our second lives call for nothing less than a renegotiation with the universe. In the first part of life, the ego is in charge and has projected unrealistic demands upon people, jobs, institutions and other aspects of the outer world. In the second half of life, Hollis maintains that these projections must be withdrawn and that we must undergo a new, inner journey based on what the soul demands. While this may at first sound theoretical and impractical, in fact Hollis describes aspects of what such an odyssey would entail as it relates to relationships, vocation, and other aspects of living. Hollis says that we already have everything we need to make this journey, however fraught with fear it can be. It's already inside us. I think you will come away convinced. At only 117 pages, concentrated and learned--but not pedantic--almost every paragraph has a sentence that can be pondered, underlined, and returned to. I expect to do this many times. As frightening as the midlife passage can be, Hollis gives us hope. He writes, "We are in the sea-surge of the soul, along with many others to be sure, but needing to swim under our own power. The truth is simply that what we must know will come from within. If we can align our lives with that truth, no matter how difficult the abrasions of the world, we will feel healing, hope, and new life."If you have entered the dark wood of midlife--as Dante referred to it--you will find this book to be an immensely rewarding companion that offers not a way out, but a description of a path through that will be uniquely your own.

Book Project Critical ReviewJames EguesBlack Hawk Down, written by Mark Bowden, a journalist, tells a story about a group of American Soldiers that were sent into Somalia on a humanitarian mission authorized by George Bush in 1992. Several of the helicopters, Black Hawks, that they brought with them into the mission were shot down and the crews were mutilated by a local militia. Every time a Black Hawk crashed, a brutal firefight broke out, resulting in deaths and injuries of American soldiers. The rescue team could not land to get the group because of local Somalis. The mission was overall a failure, the mission’s death toll was one thousand of Somalis and nineteen American Soldiers. and at the end of the book, soldiers are celebrating the return of Michael Durant, who was the pilot for the Super Six One Black Hawk. Michael Durant was the only survivor from the Super Six One group. Bowden’s work was an overall success because of his journalist writing style, point of view of the events, and organization of the story line.As I was reading, I fell into the book and could not stop reading. It felt as if I was really there in the setting of the book. The style Mark Bowden used to write the book made me fall in love with the story. The writing brings out great visualization for the reader, making them feel like they are in the book with. Journalistic writing has a more exciting feel to it rather than classic novelistic writing. I feel as if classic novels are more creative and have more visualization rather than journalistic writing, and I love how Black Hawk Down has that journalistic feel to it. Journalistic writing is usually more putting words on paper for the reader to be able to easily read and understand what is going on. I enjoy this because it is straightforward and can have good visualization and novelistic writing is more creative and the author has more time to write their book. They can easily put together a picture with words for the reader. The style of writing made me pay more attention to the book and I felt very interested in what was going on. I could not stop myself from reading and every chance I got, I would read the book. When reading a classic novelistic book, I feel like I am reading the book for class, however when I read a journalistic book, I feel free and enjoy reading the book.I enjoyed the different points of views Mark Bowden used throughout the book. Every other chapter or so, The point of view would change from the view of the soldiers to the view of local Somalis. It portrayed the difference between the two sides. It showed how an event could have a completely different effect on one side than the other. It helped me understand the different opinions and struggles between the two angles. It added some knowledge to the book and taught me somethings about the struggles the two groups faced. Everything the soldiers did had an impact on the Somalis, and everything the Somalis did had an impact on the soldiers. When a fight broke out it spanned across multiple chapters of the book and then switched to another perspective and continued onto some more chapters under that perspective. I thought this was helpful and very interesting. The organization of the story line was neat and looked clean. The book was split into a couple different sections, The Assault, and Black Hawk Down and more. The book starts with The Assault and follows with Black Hawk Down and continues with a couple more. I thought this was cool and organized. Chapters were short and chronological. Because the chapters were so short, there were tons of chapters. I did not like that feature, but other than the length of the chapters, everything was fine. Each chapter was tightly packed with dialogue and action. There were very few chapters that were not containing action and or dialogue between characters. I thought this was fun to read and helped me stay interested in the book. All in all, I loved the book Black Hawk Down, by Mark Bowden. I thought it was the perfect mixture of action and a sad story. Bowden’s work was an overall success because of his journalist writing style, point of view of the events, and organization of the story line. I loved the journalistic writing feel to the book. I enjoyed reading this book overall because I could not stop reading. I was attached to the book because of its writing style and the action. The different points of view from the soldiers and the Somalis surprised me and was very interesting. I thought the organization of the storyline was very neat and clean. I especially liked how the book was split into two parts. I would love to recommend Black Hawk Down to anyone who loves an action packed, war themed, sad story.

Bowden's book is written in the kind of language you would expect from a traditional journalist. He is clear, concise, and does not bog his language down in artistic flourish. In fact, in his Afterward he claims to be proud of this straightforwardness with the reader; this despite it garnering him a slight barb from one particular reviewer he mentions. However, it must be said that the structure of the book is a little messy. The number of individuals whose points of view Bowden includes can be daunting to sift through. I did not even bother to count the POVs he puts down on paper, but the reader should be aware there is no centralized perspective to go back to for reference. The author does not inject himself into the story (e.g. "And then I interviewed this person who said..."), and ordinarily that is fine. But, with a book showcasing the perspectives of so many people -- from lowly soldiers, to the their families, to commanders, to politicians -- it is difficult to sort through who is who and why any particular person is relevant. What makes it worse is that Bowden doesn't really offer any breaks for a reader to register a transition from one person's POV to another. Unfortunately, this problem hampers the flow of the story as the reader, at times, may be forced to backtrack just to refresh his or her memory on who is who. To be fair, Bowden interviewed countless individuals and wanted to give a good many of them their due. I have no doubt he left out many of POVs despite deep reservation. Still, none of this matters if the reader is not discouraged by such things. I was still able to jog through the book at a brisk and enjoyable pace in spite of this road block.Another important note: this book corresponds poorly with the eponymous movie. The reader will find many of the characters in the movie are composites of actual people Bowden describes in the book. Not to mention the movie glosses over some of the uglier aspects of war (e.g. in the book, Bowden writes the U.S. Rangers eventually start shooting anything and everything in their path, including a large number of unarmed civilians). So, if you are ready for a dose of reality, read the book and drop your jaw.

It's a concise book that is a great reminder of things you may have been taught long ago, or perhaps were doing unconsciously- if you're lucky. Some tips I definitely feel like most people do not know, including answering questions with information that leads to a dead end. If you're socially awkward, you definitely want to read this, it breaks down what to do (AND not do, which I appreciated) very specifically. I'm outgoing and feel comfortable navigating a party of strangers, but this has explained how to skip some awkward conversations that I definitely have had and do not want to have again!

This review is just for the Kindle book. It was scanned in badly and has so many spelling errors in it that it's completely unreadable. It has at least one spelling error per sentence. I'm stuck with it since there's no possibility of a refund, but learn from my mistake!

I struggle with talking to others; specifically: talking to those who don't know me well, or share my interests. (Which is most of whom I find myself speaking to) To me, many of the tips in the book feel like common sense, but are things I fail to do nonetheless. They are things I have to see in writing, usually provided with subtleties that I didn't consider. The most valuable tips for somebody like myself are those in the first half of the book. Later on, they begin to be more business related, but I can still see their value, despite currently being in college. The book gets five stars from me because it provides tons of valuable advice; in addition, Leil keeps it interesting by giving personal examples and stories alongside her tricks. I fully intend to come back to this book to help make these tricks habit. After a full read, it becomes a guide, you'll look back at conversations and realize what tricks you used, or failed to use.

Why does it seem like every time I turn the page, the author is invited to another "exclusive" dinner or party? Why is this always the tone you use to set the stage? How is this going to allow us as readers to find her relatable? Also, the subtle name dropping of "my very successful friend who works on Wall Street for a very successful investment firm who does charity work for blah blah blah" detracts from the main messages of the book: learning how to talk to people. I don't care about who you're friends with, Leil. These messages (which are quite useful! and I've employed several with great success!) are the main point of the book, and would be more effectively conveyed if the author had stopped trying to impress us with everyone she supposedly is bffs with. If you ask me, she needs to do some research on how to become more approachable/likeable, for which her current skills are bland at best.

What an awesome book!!! It should be a must-read for every High-school graduating person. In addition, I believe every businessman can benefit from it. I did, and I am an experienced Entrepreneur. Although I have listened to it twice, I recently ordered the book so I can write in the book , highlight wherever I desire, paperclip, etc areas that I want to go back to quickly. This is definitely one of the best most-useful books that I have ever read.Ron Hendrick, DVM , CEO, KLT Partners, LLC

It's important that we always strive to grow and develop as individuals. This book gave some great insights into how to better yourself, relate with others, and communicate. It's more than just a book about conversing with others; it helps you unlock the true potential within yourself.

A bit difficult to rate.In one side Leil writing is witty and filled with anecdotes to deliver her pointsOn the other side the tricks offered feel like too much. Some of then would drive people crazy overthinking, and her funny stories get annoying when she involves stereotypes and genders. And that leads to a boring book. Moreover many of her chapters are about how to MAKE people think believe or act in certain ways and that is merely manipulative.

I was desperate, but skeptical when I ordered this book. Ever since becoming a member of an editorial team at my high school, I've encountered countless moments when I JUST can't seem to communicate on a personal level with the rest of the staff members, who were all a grade above me.Yes. I felt timid every time I spoke to the editors, and despite how much I wanted to talk to them, I couldn't even make it past a thirty second conversation. And after I accidentally goofed on our FIRST release? Oh god none of them even bothered to talk to me after that... And I felt way too threatened to try to start a conversation. So the result was this: I suffered from becoming the social outcast because of a pretty bad first impression.....After reading the book, I understood why.1) I abused the Quick-smiles that were mentioned as shallow in the first chapter. I would flash a smile that immediately disappear after three seconds (or less). I'm now working on the "flowing smile" technique :D :)2) I simply had 0 skills in making small conversations. Usually the small talks end with me or the listener just running off with a "Oh I've gotta go now"3) It was my specialty to ask overly obvious questions and make the most awkward comments at the worst times.....4) The "instant history" technique was something I never used despite the various circumstances I catch myself in.5) I fidgeted a lot and gave embarrassed smiles when I wasn't feeling embarrassed.6) technique #88, "my goof your gain" was something I really should have used to ease the tension.....well darn it. I'll just keep trying with this book's help. :D
