An interesting book which which however contains a lot of material that is highly speculative and/or inconsistent. Naranjo's pictures of the types are interesting and indeed despite being an old hand at the Enneagram, I believe I've learned or gained a few new perspectives from his portraits of the types; some of his ideas are fairly out there however, including a secondary axis (a 4-point-difference line linking e.g. 7/2 around point 9, masochism/sadism for 4/8, etc ) which appears to be not especially well-founded. He also has alternative mapping to Jung and Myers-Briggs which however don't always match those theories purported mapping (for instance, he pegs Five as INTP and 'introverted sensation' (?!), when in Myers-Briggs INTP matches introverted-thinking. He also matches types to homeopathic personality types and the old endomorph/mesomorph etc. theory of personality which I believe is (or should be) long discredited. Overall his work as would be expected matches Palmer's view rather than e.g. Riso's (For instance, Threes are characterized as one of the nicer types by Naranjo). I recommend the book but it requires careful thought.

This is not a simple read, but it's worthwhile if you want to understand the psychological basis of the Enneagram. It's all related back to text book psychology/psychiatry. Interesting, but not one you can blaze through and learn the Enneagram quickly. I would suggest reading this after you have some background in the Enneagram system.

The book is a great view of the enneagram - from a central "passion" for each of the types. It gave me another perspective on my own type and enable me to better identify with that type.However, the book is written for a specific audience: practicians in psychology field.The psychology vocabulary used is sometime hard to understand - but google can remedy to that (note that some words can't even be found in the default Kindle dictionnary).All in all, still a great ressource for ennegram typing and understanding.

Claudio Naranjo logra integrar en su visión sistémica de la personalidad, tanto las posturas enrgéticas y libidinales (Freud) las posturas relacionarles objetables (Klein) y la tradición psicológica conductal, para dar una visión ecléctica de la personalidad, que dejará a más de uno sorprendidos.

Way too intellectual for the average person. Sentences are a paragraph long. Hard to read. Sorry dude.

Naranjo is a verbose man. Still, quite a necessary read for those serious in their enneagram studies. This would be best read in conjunction with Maitri's books.

It's so interesting! I literally dream about reading it when I'm not and a day without flipping a page in it is wasted.

I have read 8-9 enneagram books and have frankly gotten tired of the whole system. But after finally buying Naranjo's book I see the application of it as a legitimate system within transpersonal psychotherapy. Few other authors of the enneagram have any valid credentials to teach this system. Great book.
