Between Pain & Grace: A Biblical Theology of Suffering by Gerald Peterman & Andrew SchmutzerJust finished this thick read on how scripture addresses suffering. An incredible resource and treatment of a decisive issue in the church and in the world. One of many profound insights to share a taste:-"The dramatic movement of lament is both spiritually pedagogical and socially transforming. As John D. Witvliet correctly observes, 'When practiced as an act of faith, lament can be a powerfully healing experience.' Lament captures a pain that informs but does not define the meaning of life. Paradoxically, praise needs pain. Praise that makes sense echoes with the remembrance of suffering reversed. The current social trend views everyone as a victim. This capitalizes on the first part of lament, but without the crowning praise. Patrick Miller warns, 'Both the lowly and the powerful will be tempted to conclude that the status is quo, that possibilities unseen are inauthentic and unlikely, that the world's power to define reality is ultimate and unchallenged.' The goal should be the social transformation." -In experiencing and responding to real pain in the world, it is ironic to me that we are so illiterate in one of the most "productive" (transformative) acts of defiant faith - lament and mourning (complaining).I took this course at MBI with Dr. Peterman & Dr. Schmutzer and tell every pastor I know to read it. Massively important and even a sadly underrated conversation.

Between Pain & Grace is an honest and refreshing theological reflection on the pervasive reality of suffering- honest, in that it does not brush over the disturbing and unnerving nature of the subject, but treats it with solemnity and its victims with significance- and refreshing, in that its content confronts the various illusions into which many church communities today have bought. These illusions in the church contribute to the silencing and disillusionment of its sheep, whose cries need to be given a voice, rather than their shepherding. If the embodied and emotional suffering of the Lord Jesus and his followers is clearly articulated in the Scriptures, should the church not also be a safe place where lament is embrace and difficult questions are welcomed and honored? Between Pain & Grace is a step towards the breakdown of facades that inhibit true worship: facades of power, happiness, sincerity… and a call for believers to reclaim the sacred language of suffering. From the perspective of a Bible college student and a pupil of Dr. Schmutzer and Dr. Peterman, I found the reflections in this book deeply empowering, refreshing, and liberating. I highly recommend this book.

This book is has so much good and practical insight into pain and suffering, with a slightly different focus from Moody Bible Institute professors. (I used it as one of my references on the subject for a theology class at another university.)

Opened my eyes to things I had not seen before. Helps to develop the understanding and is very useful for approaching your congregation in relation to the suffering that so many go thru.

This is a highly technical yet engaging and thought-provoking book. It is not the easiest to read if you have no biblical training, yet it is sure to radically challenge preconceptions and traditional models for evaluating suffering. I would recommend to anyone who wants further study on the topic.

Excellent and insightful book. A must read.

God’s Word has not left us without hope, illustration, or theological instruction.” p. 11“Suffering people cry out because God is mighty, not in challenge of it.” p. 28“People with hearts crippled by profound pain are forced to stand and clap week after week with little if any mention of the dark trials that fill their hearts. Is this a moral way of treating the hurting in our midst? Wounded people among us “smell” a form of pretense that is programmed and insincere as the canned laughter of sitcoms. They are correct. Shunned grief is spiritual hypocrisy.” p. 105“Clearly, God values words and tears far more than we do.” p. 113“The sovereignty of God is not seen in what he prevents but in his majestic ability to take the broken pieces of our lives and make something beautiful with them.” p. 201“Typically we find that God gives enough gladness to make life bearable or even enjoyable, and enough pain, sorrow, and trial to remind us that we are just passing through. The new earth will be our real home; this cursed planet, even with its immense beauty, will pass.” p. 277“Truly, the Christian life means to exist between two worlds: the old world of sin, alienation, and death and the new world of righteousness, holiness, and life.” p. 281“The cross of Christ does not culminate redemptive history. Rather, it enables the renewal of the Creator’s world, one called “very good.” p. 300The beginning of pain and grace is written in a technical and academic context, but halfway through the book the information shifts to a pastoral context. In the first chapter the authors identify the difference between pain (objective, external, and typically social as opposed to personal and mental) and suffering (subjective, internal, and typically mental and emotional as opposed to physical or social). p. 14 The authors spend the first few chapters defining important concepts found within a biblical theodicy. They coin a new term, or at least a term that I am unfamiliar with, relational ecosystem. Schmutzer defines relational ecosystem, “Like the roots of a massive tree, we are forced to to recognize sin’s amazing ability to penetrate deep into the crevices of human life, especially the relational tissues of our lives. Suffering is intrinsically woven into the fabric of our relationships… So the salvation that God provides in Christ has more to do with helping and restoration than mere rescue and deliverance.” p. 37-38Between Pain and Grace includes some complex concepts, but there are also some very important practical helps for every believer. Whenever I began to read a book on suffering I always wonder where the author will take me. I was not disappointed with the amount of research that was necessary to write this book, nor was I disappointed with the massive amount of Scripture that was included. The authors are very well read and have put forth great effort. However, the book is not comprehensive. Despite the lack of some important information (hell, war in the OT), I was pleased to see that the authors included topics such as the suffering of Jesus, the suffering of God (divine passibility), community suffering, sexual abuse, and mental illness. The previously mentioned topics are very important discussions for our local churches and very few spiritual leaders are discussing them. Within the book there is also a chapter discussing family (toxic families), the patriarch Joseph is the center-point of the chapter.Between Pain and Grace is an excellent read for anyone interested in suffering or theodicy, but like most other books on the topic I was left wanting. It seems that each writer of theodicy focuses on several specifics, and since that is true, there is always something missing. I commend any writer, theologian, or pastor who tackles the difficult and complex topic of pain and suffering. The topic of suffering remains vast and diverse, continue reading my blog for more theodicy reviews. In exchange for an honest review Moody Publishers Blogger Review Program has provided me with a copy of Pain & Grace. I have written an honest review.

From the Author

This book was inspired by my grandmother, Rachel Shwartz. I didn't start to get to know my grandmother until after she died. When she was alive, I visited her multiple times, but we could never have a conversation. While she spoke Yiddish, Polish, Ukrainian, Hungarian, Romanian, and Hebrew, I only knew one language: English.I knew she was a Holocaust survivor. But like many children growing up in America, I didn't really understand what that meant. Of course, I learned about the Holocaust in school and by going to museums, but I couldn't really understand the magnitude of what it was.Unfortunately, my grandmother passed away in 2012--still years before I was ready or able to ask the questions about her experience. Thankfully, she--and several other surviving members of her family--had their stories recorded. Their testimonies are what led to this book.

I am a 98 years young great-grandmother who will be 99 in 2 months. I finished college in 1942. I have read many, many books on the Holocaust. During the war, we in the United States did not know the extent nor the viciousness of what the Nazis and their collaborators forced upon the Jewish people. Lately, I have been disappointed to learn that even though the Holocaust happened only 80 years ago, many young students today know nothing about the history of events leading up to the Holocaust nor are they aware of how calculated, widespread, and committed the Nazis were to their goal of eradicating the Jewish people. For these reasons, I recommend this book especially to young people who are ignorant about how ordinary peoples' lives were affected by these events. Most books tell the stories of people being forced into ghettos, going to the concentration camps, slaving under torturous conditions, and being sent to the gas chambers. This book gives us insight into those trying to hide and survive in small shtetls and towns, where finding food and safe shelter and living with fear and trepidation were ever-present realities. This book captured and kept my interest so that I finished it in one day. Despite my years and previous exposure to the events of the Holocaust, I learned much from this book. Its perspectives are unique and I hope it will stimulate others to explore their own family histories.

This book about how a family survived during the Holocaust by hiding and hiking in the woods in all kinds of weather, in barns, in shuls, in basements, in filth, and by never hesitating to ask for help, is a must read. Not often do we get such a Holocaust story – especially one written by a family member. I also loved how the author told her family’s story through several of their voices. In that way the reader gets a more rounded and fuller insight of what they were all going through. That they all survived is a miracle. As the author says:“Their will to live, and a bit a luck, kept the family safe during the Holocaust, bringing them across Eastern Europe all the way to Israel.”

This book was a very tough read. Knowing that this story followed a real family and the struggles they faced made it more real than a fictional novel would have.Aviva is a beautiful writer. She manages to make the story flow, even when the topics are exceptionally difficult to read. The story follows many characters from their happy existence in Poland through their fight for survival as Hitler invaded country after country rounding up Jewish people (among others, of course). This family truly stayed one step ahead of the Nazis for many years, having MANY close calls that had me literally on the edge of my seat. While this book is full of depressing information, it has many moments of happiness and overwhelming bravery. My favorite thing was seeing the photos of the family in the book, I loved being able to put faces to the names.Overall, I would recommend this book!

In My Family's Survival, the author's Jewish grandmother and family escape the Germans by hiding in the forest, sneaking over borders, staying in barns or shacks and scavenging for food. It's amazing all they go through to survive and keep their family intact, sometimes apart and not knowing where the others are for months at a time. This is a well written book and their experience was described with such detail. Well done Aviva! I'm sure your family is so proud of this book and their story.

A truly amazing story! The life of a survivor through the worst of times. Must read!

An amazing survival story based on true events. Really liked the author's approach to telling the story from the various perspectives of the different family members. After finishing the book I was very interested in what ultimately happened to the family so appreciated the "Afterward."

“We were too lucky, always getting away in the nick of time, and always finding someone who was willing to help us, for who knows what reason.”When they came for the Jews in the Polish city of Butla, the Shwartz family hadn’t believed it could happen. They decided to run and that sole decision saved all their lives. David and Hinda were raising three young children and their niece, Rachel, and enjoying farm life in their Polish village until the Russians and then Germans came. The family fled to Hungary, but peace there was short-lived. The family had to separate at times to survive, yet David was always watching to make sure they didn’t get captured. My Family’s Survival is a true story about the author’s grandmother (Rachel) and her relatives survival during the Holocaust. Aviva grew up knowing her grandmother was a survivor of those times, but her grandmother would not talk about it to anyone. As she got older, she started researching and found recordings and writings that pieced together the family’s story of survival. I found this book through Instagram when the author contacted me about a book she was writing. I was given a free copy of the book in exchange for a fair review.David, Hinda and their youngest are captured one day, leaving Rachel to care for the other two children. Rachel finds a woman in the village to take them in while David, Hinda and the baby are moved from jail to jail to jail – no one really knowing to do with them. Finally, they are released and David finds Rachel. Soon after that, the children are sent to an orphanage to be kept safe possibly with Christian families. Then, there is talk of escaping into Romania. Years of cold and starvation start taking their toll on their bodies, but David pushes them to find safety in a new country. My Family’s Survival reads like most historical fiction books from this time period, but it’s all true. I’m amazed at how this family ended up all surviving after the separations, sicknesses and bombings. The book shows how offering help to those in need can make a huge difference in a family’s future. I highly recommend this book to anyone high school age or older. Lovers of historical fiction should pick this up to read some of the true history of the Holocaust.

If you like beautiful pictures of a couple of guys kayak fishing, then this is the book for you.I'm not sure what I was looking for now that I think about it...the holy grail of kayak fishing maybe? Whatever the case, there is little information in this book that you cannot find easily on the Internet. In fact, I was saddened by the realization that I could have written this book based on the information that I already knew, and I'm a newbie to the sport! Most disappointing is the fact that the actual kayak fishing information is so far back in the book that there are precious few pages left to read. Much of the book is dedicated to the basics: kayak equipment, paddling techniques, etc. I would prefer to read much more on fishing techniques for kayakers. This is truly a beautiful book, and nicely written in an article-by-article style. For the person who wants pertinent kayaking information summarized in one place, buy this book. For those well established in the sport, with safety gear in place and paddling techniques well in hand, there is probably little to learn from this book.

Is a good book for those who want to know the basis of kayaks fishing, special attention to the sea fishing. I was looking a book for fly fishing in kayak, and this is only a few pages.

What I like most about this book is the photos. They are awesome! It really gets me motivated to go out on my yak and start fishing! There is a lot of basic info like how to paddle, types of kayaks, equipment options and not a lot of specific info - for example, do not expect to find to the answer to what type of lure will catch a trout in California, you will not find that. This is a fun book to have around the house or place on a coffee table.

A lot of repeat information from other reads

Should have gone through the reviews prior to ordering. Pretty much waste of money.

This is a good book for a beginer kayaker, teaches you the basics not to in depthIf you already use a kayak dont bother, you can learn the fishing part from the guys at the kayak shop.

Fantastic Value

this book was great for an intro to kayak fishing. lots of ideas and tips for rigging your boat. also a good source for all of the gear you may need. if you are an experienced kayak fisherman you will find little new info in this book.

From the Back Cover

Once upon a time, the church was deeply involved in the arts, leading the way in beauty, technical ability, and even funding. In many churches today the arts are an afterthought at best and forbidden at worst. This insightful book takes you beyond "how we've always done it," beyond fads, beyond mere imitation of the culture, and beyond utilitarianism to develop a robust, dynamic, and substantive vision for the place of the arts--and artists--in our churches. "The church ought to be synonymous with all good gifts and stewardship of the earth. And it most certainly ought to be synonymous with the stewardship of the arts. For the Beauty of the Church reminds us of this essential truth and many more."--Charlie Peacock, codirector, Art House America; author of New Way to Be Human"Pragmatic and theologically astute at the same time, For the Beauty of the Church is a gem-packed collection for those navigating between the realms of the arts and the church."--Makoto Fujimura, artist; founder and creative director, International Arts Movement"One reason the church exists is that our hunger for beauty will not go away. These essays remind us why."--John Ortberg, author of God Is Closer Than You Think and Love Beyond Reason; pastor, Menlo Park Presbyterian Church"This book is an urgently needed wake-up call for the church! I pray that it will encourage more artists and churches to offer each other their respective gifts."--Marva J. Dawn, author of In the Beginning, God and A Royal "Waste" of Time; teaching fellow in spiritual theology, Regent College"This book is encouraging, celebrative, and hopeful, but it is also explosive. This conversation is critical not only for its practical suggestions about the arts but also for its bracing theological framework that will help make artistic and spiritual worship the transforming experience God intends it to be."--William Dyrness, professor of theology and culture, Fuller Theological SeminaryContributors include: Eugene PetersonW. I just finished For the Beauty of the Church. Dang it, it is going to be an expensive book. I have already ordered two more copies. As a woman, a working artist and a believer my relationship with the church has been a love/hate relationship. So often I have been unable to articulate the struggle. David Taylor has brought together a varied group to give voice to the struggle. Not just a group talking theory, but individuals in the trenches. I was registered to attend the conference in Austin where these ideas were first presented, but I was unable to attend (a new baby and allergy season in Texas took me out!) I am thrilled to have this resource in my hot little hand. I read. I cried. I underlined vigorously. I wrote comments in the margins. I read more. I ordered another two books and when my budget recovers I will order more. (Merry Christmas friends and family.)For the first reading Barbara Nicolosi's chapter was my favorite as it brought healing to my heart. As the seasons change other chapters will rise to the forefront. I know that I will go back to this book to remind myself that the battle is worth fighting, and that the struggle, as Jeremy Begbie so eloquently reminds us, has an end and that it might behoove us to think from the end to the present. I am so PROUD of Eugene Peterson for not only admitting he has artist friends, but that artist friends are worth having, YOU GO EUGENE! Barbara Nicolosi's chapter reminded me that what is do is not a waste of time, energy or emotion. Joshua Banner's description of a pastor involved in one's arts career, in a positive way, blew my mind. I can not even imagine, but wow, what a concept. Hope stirred. And David Taylor did a delightful wrap up. Context, context, context! David is a master encourager. It is a good book. It was an easy read. "For the Beauty of the Church" will bring understanding into the Body of Christ.I have art in 54 nations yet at any moment I question whether or not I am "really" an artist. There is so much pain in the world, at any moment I can question the value of arts. It is difficult, at least for me, to balance the truth of it all, that what I do is worth doing. In the church environment where results and numbers are held in such esteem, it is hard to quantify beauty. I am very thankful for this collection of essays and their pointing to a truth beyond statistics.I am gonna go paint now.

This was recommended to me by an artist friend after several conversations on the topic. A helpful little book for those who might be unfamiliar with the conversation but are concerned with learning. Unfortunately, the book's greatest strength is also its weakness. I appreciated the variety of perspectives from across the spectrum evangelicalism and valued the inclusion of a Roman Catholic voice. However, this causes the quality of the chapters to be a bit uneven, some are more engaging than others. With that being said, all of them are worthy of your time and consideration. Especially if you're looking to understand the basics of the intersection between the life of the church and the work of the artist

This is the kind of book I will be thinking about, talking about, recommending, giving to friends, and re-reading regularly for many, many years. The essays collected and edited in this volume each stand alone as relevant, helpful, well-crafted works around the topic of art and the church. Taken together, they form both a manifesto on the beautiful kinship between the arts and the church, and a manual for how to best foster that kinship. One of my favorite things about the book was the rich diversity in the ideas presented. Taylor has gathered a blend of voices, each speaking thoughtfully from their varied perspectives on topics for which they are perfectly suited. And yet, even though the authors are diverse in age, experience, and background, the book maintains a sense of continuity and flow throughout its entirety.I would highly recommend this book to anyone, but especially to a few specific folks:-all those in pastoral or worship ministry-artists of all kinds-believers who feel no connection to the arts, and wonder why churches should bother with them at allWhether you are a pastor, an artist, or someone who has serious doubts about the connection between church and art, this book is an absolute must-read.

Some thot provoking essays, very good read on Christian faith and the arts. Especially liked the final essay from Begbie. Might want to consider getting Begbie’s book or Crouch’s book instead of this collection, but this is a good intro, nonetheless.

As a worship/creative arts director for a church, I greatly appreciated this book. The chapters are all written by different authors with different perspectives on the arts. I found all of them to be helpful in painting a picture of the need, call, theory, and implementation of arts in the local church. It's an easy but satisfying read, I'll be using this with my arts teams!

A great collection of essays. I use this material in teaching worship pastors and leaders in undergraduate courses. It covers many different aspects of worship theology and its practical application for the church.

The richest things in life are free. Well, Taylor’s book does cost some $$, but the its value is beyond all price because it advances of the awareness of our need to affirm art in the functions church.

awesome read for christian artists. I was inspired by this book as a artist, to keep pressing in and going forward in my calling, regardless of what culture might be saying around me.
