If you want nice and tidy package of all the things you need to know to get ready to do great Data Science, then this is the book for you!Programming Skills for Data Science starts at the beginning of the DS journey. It takes you through the basics, careful to ensure that no tricky acronym or software 'gotcha' is left unexplained. Folks will appreciate the book's guiding hand which provides a consistent and carefully thought out introduction to all the tools and technologies you need to know. It starts with command line tools and git, making sure the reader is prepared for the more advanced stuff later in the book. I liked the inclusion on a chapter about using Markdown for documentation purposes. If you already are familiar with this markup language, its an easy thing to skim. But if you haven't used Markdown before, it is great to have it here, right in-line with the other prerequisites.The next section of the book provides a great introduction to R - a powerful and wildly popular tool for 'doing' data science. The way Mike Freeman and Joel Ross build up from simple programming concepts to advanced R features really showcase that they've been teaching this stuff for a long time - and have a system that works! I love the walkthrough of basic data types in R (which are kinda weird even if you are familiar with data types from other languages). I also appreciate the section on where one can find help. Thats one of the biggest lessons to learn when doing any programming work - its completely ok to search out answers when you get stuck. Mike and Joel provide a comprehensive list for doing just that.The main section of the book gets people comfortable with the primary tasks of a Data Scientist - wrangling and visualizing data using code. And here, Joel and Mike again show their expertise by picking the best-in-class packages for working with data in R today. Their showcasing of the 'tidyverse' of packages gets you parsing and working with data in the most direct and powerful way possible. They show you how to get started with ggplot2 for visualizing data quickly. There is even a section on making maps in R - using the same tools!The final section of the book on building and publishing data-driven reports and analyses really ties everything together. Their suggestions for building and publishing static and interactive analyses are really some of the best ways to get your work out there. I learned a lot of how to build out these interactive tools using Shiny - and make them look good too!Throughout the book I loved the writing style and the attention to detail. There are innumerable call-outs, tips, and warnings as you read. I love that they provide both Windows and Mac examples of setup and screenshots. And I love that the book comes in full color! So those graphics are easy to read and understand. I think a critique that could be leveled against this book is "well can't you find this all on the Internet?". But really, what book couldn't you say that about, these days? But it is true - there are resources out there that cover chunks of this material. You could probably amass a body of work that hit roughly the same topics. But a benefit of this book is having a single resource where all of this material is packaged for you in one handy-dandy guide, so you don't have to be constantly googling mystery words and trying to piece disparate narratives together while learning something new.This book is a great guide and a great resource for starting down the Data Science path. I have a copy and will be getting one for my friends and associates that are interested in getting started with working and analyzing data!!

I recently got this book as a supplement to my learning R in a university system since my professor was not the best teacher. I must say I'm glad I found this book. Unlike many other coding books, it starts at the very beginning such as file management, text editors, the best IDEs, and project set up. After these topics it jumps into the typical computer science stuff like variables, data types, etc. It's hard to stress how nice it is for a book to be comprehensive in its approach to learning a computer programming language. Too many books forget that its a contextual process, and it's crucial to understand everything that goes along with simply just coding scripts and functions.The book goes over how to collect and manipulate data, how to visualize data, and how to build and share your applications. It goes over so many important concepts that I've found other books lack like accessing data from databases and web APIs, and it introduces many of the essential functions used for data analysis too. As someone who was personally interested in making maps with R, there are great examples of that too.The writing is clear and concise, the examples are fantastic, and the snippets of code are extremely helpful. You can tell it was written by someone who is good at and excited by data science. If you're looking for an enjoyable, comprehensive, and practical overview of R definitely get this book.

Love this bear series - it started with Bear Snores On, which my child received as a gift when he turned one. He fell in love with Bear and we have all the rest of the books. He asks for them to be read almost daily and memorizes the books so we have fun "reading" them together. This book, as well as the rest of the series, has the cutest images and rhymes. What works best is the repetitive phrases, which help my toddler learn the concepts.

This was a pretty good read. This was not just a book about hair loss, but about our health in general. It points out the rising trend that more and more young men are suffering from male pattern baldness at earlier ages. And that indigenous people like "Eskimos" don't seem to suffer from this affliction. It considers what many in the scientific community studying hair loss in men do not consider, and that is MPB may not be the result of random genetics happening to people "Just cause". Slator makes a compelling argument for MPB being the result of poor health brought about by unnatural habits modern men in society practice. From eating against our individual genetics to sexual practices that deplete vital "energies" or nutrients (A view not considered by modern science as a correlation to MPB since it is based off of an opposing view in their health) this book considers multiple angles and how each may be a factor. Another great plus is that these alternative approaches can be halted and possibly reversed through simple means like finding your correct diet or changing your bedroom practices. This is an interesting solution than just get surgery or wait for the next medical miracle.The downside is that some of the conclusions can seem drawn from vague sources at times and the author seems unable to backup many of his claims with authoritative expert sources. It would really help his position if he could get a third party opinion from some trusted source. The questionnaire about finding the correct diet seemed good at first, but there was an instance of a question repeating itself, and a few possible answers to some of the questions missing. While not discrediting does weaken the argument that it is valid for finding your correct or natural diet.All in all I would say that even if your are not a balding man wanting to stop his hair from falling out, this book is still a must read for anyone studying the subject. It might make a few leaps but the arguments deserve more research and it is a shame the scientific establishment studying this phenomenon don't do them. It is still a refreshing read on the subject and can remind a reader that there are other views of health and that no single answer is necessarily the right answer.

I felt compelled to write a review since it doesn't look like this book has any yet. The title certainly grabbed my attention, but overall at least for me, there wasn't much that I hadn't read before online. I skimmed through quite a bit of the book because of that. I will probably go back and read it again. I wouldn't say it was a waste of time. The author presents a number of modern health concepts/habits with the focus being hair. I think if you've never researched hair loss in any depth online or any kind of health self improvement, you'll find this book full of things you might have never thought of before. I am curious though as to why the author at some point in the book mentions "his client's," but there is no information in the book about who the author is or what kind of background he comes from.

Some good information and some which is a bit way out there but may be good if you are willing to try it.I found the questionnaire to determine the type of foods I need to eat most helpful.In only a few days I have already lost 2kg without trying.

Great Book! This book doesn't sugar coat the necessary steps to get your health on track to create a healthy environment for healthy thriving hair. I read this book at work; I had to multitask. Each page was worth it and definitely supports the heaps of research I've done on food/lifestyle and it's connection to hair.

About the Author

Neil R. Carlson pursued his undergraduate studies at the University of Illinois. He had planned to study nuclear physics, but when he discovered in an introductory psychology course that psychology was really a science, he decided that was what he wanted to do. Before changing his major, Carlson talked with several professors and visited their laboratories, and when he saw what physiological psychologists do, he knew that he had found his niche. He stayed on at Illinois and received his Ph.D. Then, after a two-year postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Iowa, Carlson came to the University of Massachusetts, where he’s been ever since. When he arrived at UMass, Carlson established a laboratory where he investigated the role of the limbic system in species-typical and learned behaviors, continuing work he had done at the University of Illinois. He received several Biomedical Research Support Grants and a research grant from NICHD. As he became more involved in textbook writing, Carlson began to focus his attention more and more on this activity and on his teaching. Carlson took the opportunity afforded by his first sabbatical leave to write the first edition of Physiology of Behavior. He very much enjoyed the experience, and this endeavor taught him much more about behavioral neuroscience. He was gratified with the positive response of his students and of the colleagues who adopted the book. The pleasure provided by this response and by the enjoyment of keeping up with the literature and writing about it has kept him going for 12 editions. (He has no plans to stop writing.) Carlson retired from UMass in the fall of 2004 but continues to keep up with developments in the field of behavioral neuroscience and to revise his book. The Psychology Department has kindly let him keep an office at the university, which makes it easier for him to continue interacting with his former colleagues. Carlson’s interests outside of writing include spending time with his family, traveling, fly fishing, skiing, and flying his small airplane. As an undergraduate psychology major at Cornell University, Melissa A. Birkett discovered courses in biopsychology, behavior, endocrinology, and evolutionary psychology. There, she was introduced to interdisciplinary research incorporating multiple perspectives in the challenging task of understanding behavior. She became interested in learning about behavior and its underlying mechanisms. She worked as an undergraduate research assistant in several laboratories on projects ranging from insect behavior to sleep in undergraduates. Those formative experiences and interactions with several influential research mentors convinced her to pursue a career in research. Melissa completed her PhD in the Neuroscience and Behavior program at the University of Massachusetts Amherst (where Neil Carlson was a faculty member at the time). While there, she received training in visual neuroscience and psychopharmacology. Her interest in neuroscience and behavior grew to encompass the importance of effective teaching and pedagogy and she concurrently earned a master’s degree in science education. In 2007, she accepted a faculty position at Northern Arizona University in the Department of Psychological Sciences. Melissa currently conducts research related to the stress response and teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in neuroscience, psychopharmacology, and the teaching of psychology. Each semester, she supervises student researchers and seeks to provide them with the kinds of opportunities she found valuable as a student. Her work has been recognized with awards for both outstanding teaching and teaching innovation, and she has contributed to several publications on best practices in teaching neuroscience. Melissa is excited for the opportunity to contribute to the twelfth edition of Physiology of Behavior and hopes that this text continues to engage new students, introducing them to this fascinating interdisciplinary field.

This was the primary text in a PhD level physiological psychology course. This is A LOT of information and the author should be appreciated for getting it into an intelligent order/presentation. I don't know if the problems are more editing and production. Many of the topics appear more than once with different information in different sections. So there is some disorder. This is somewhat due to a macro to micro view or maybe general systems to specific functions. The FAILURE is the index. Many important passages are just left out of the index. There might be one or two references to an item and you realize that the one you are looking for is not there. I can't really understand this, since it should be easy to do electronically. I don't know who was deciding to leave what references out. Certainly for the cost of the text we neednt spare four or five pages of index. Anyway, frustrating and unnecessary. I'm not a big fan of Carlson's writing style, but it isn't a novel, it works for what it does. Perhaps it isn't really PhD level material for a primary text....

Can't swipe down to read like other textbooks. No working links in this book. To be an eBook. I would think if it has a link I should be able to click the link and go to the site like in other books. This is one step away from a paperback book for this book to be written in 2000-any-year it should be more internet friendly for as much as it cost. I don't really consider this an eBook. It closer to a PDF file but not really because if you put a link in a PDF file you can click it and it will take you to the site. I gave this a 2 Star because it has good graphics. Not happy with all the money I spent on this book.

I have used Carlson in my teaching for years. I bought this copy for my TA because the new publisher policy is to only make the text available online instead of allowing me to have texts to hand out to TA, and retrieve, each semester. The publisher cost me money.This new edition has not been thoroughly edited before publication. There are figures without figure numbers. There are figures out of order. Figure references in text are frequently buried in text rather than at the beginning or end of the paragraph where they would be easier to find.The new edition has substantial improvements in organization of some of the text. It has added significant sections. It has also added things that are not treated well - resilience, allostasis, come to mind.The publisher's PowerPoints with text is missing several figures. Fortunately, these can be found in publisher's PowerPoint of just the figures. PowerPoint text is not organized hierarchically by topic on slides.As usual, I do not find the publisher's data bank for test questions to be valuable.

This book has an enormous amount of material in it and the book is well designed and sturdy. However... if you need the code to access REVEL, the interactive portion of the book, along with access to the quizzes, for my class anyway, don't waste your money. I contacted Amazon more than three times about this issue. I was initially told that Pearson would email me an access code within 24 hours. It has been several weeks, and I still don't have it. I was sent another book, still no code. I'm currently four weeks into my class and no code. That equals ten major quizzes that are inaccessible that results in a zero! I would suggest to go directly to Pearson, save yourself the stress and a good bit of money and just get the 3 ring binder book with code for less than $100. I wish I had know about that option before I spent $230 on this. For me it was a TOTAL waste of money, not only for the book but for the class that I could not keep up with due to the lack of having the access code.

The international edition being sold is missing chapter 18. Also, the entire book is black and white, which renders many of the diagrams impossible or difficult to interpret. The actual hardcover text is 748 pages, versus the international edition which has 714.

Giving this textbook 5 stars because I used this thing more then any other college book during my 4 years of college. This book was required for a intro to neuroscience course I was taking. During the time I was taking this class I was taking 18 credit hours and this was the hardest course out of all 5 classes I was taking. And to make it worse, I was taking it online. But yeah, the book was very helpful with the course even thought everything we were tested/quizzed on in that class was based on the professors online lecture videos.

I mostly liked this purchase, thought it was a good value. It's in black and white so some of the illustrations meant to be in color were less useful. However, in chapters 14 and 15 (and some chapters beyond though not as extensive) there was unreadable text/gibberish text on each page.

This book had, in my opinion, just the right amount of information: the chapters were not too long or overloaded with unnecessary details, but each topic was covered fairly in- depth, and throughout confusing or particularly interesting concepts were highlighted with extra information. This book is a really nice foundation for an introductory behavioral neuroscience course; I still refer to it from time to time. The writing style is easy to read and the case files associated with each chapter add interest. This was one of my favorite textbooks.MyPsychKit access often isn't available from the publisher right after a new edition is released; sometimes you have to wait for it to become available. Amazon has updated the book's description page to reflect that now, however, so I am giving the book five stars.

Given to us as a gift and favorite of our toddler. It has been a favorite for almost a year now. Great drawings, fun content, lots to point out as the child gets older. Plus, babies love pictures (or drawings) of other babies.

I like this charming book, but it's a little too sophisticated for my 20-month-old granddaughter. I hope she'll grow into it.

The book is adorable, the pictures are great! I bought the book as part of a baby gift and the mom loved it!

This is a fun book that depicts what life it like for a Manhattan baby in a super cute way. I love that my baby will be able to identify with the story--the strollers covered with plastic, the parks, the busy sidewalks, the apartments.

My daughter LOVES this! Two thumbs wayyy up! We read it almost every night before bed. Well worth it and sturdy too.

By far the most useful book on it’s topic. Well written. Very logically laid out. My hard copy is dogeared and highlighted. Hahn is a gifted writer and this book exemplifies what he himself writes about in Chapter 17 "Spiritual Reading". In that chapter he makes the point that spiritual reading (such as reading this book) is a discipline that requires deliberate effort - for example setting aside 10 minutes a day for spiritual reading. Equally importantly, it requires deliberation and one shouldn't just 'power through' a stack of spiritual reading because it will greatly diminish any possibility to reflect on what one has read! It's also why one might be skeptical of people who make a habit of 'reading the whole bible every year'...one has to wonder how much of that was considered on anything more than the superficial level...Not coincidentally, this book is divided into 40 brief chapters designed to be read and then reflected on - this reflection is where I find real spiritual growth occurs. In this way, it is much like Rev. Scalia's even more excelled "That Nothing Be Lost" book published recently.

A friend asked me about and for a book of the history of traditions/rituals of the Catholic Church. Instead of just doing a practice or ritual just to be doing it, why should one do it? I told him I would look to see if I could find such a book. I found and read a sample of this book and decided to buy two copies; one for him and me. On receiving them and reading the introduction along with the first chapter on Holy Water, I believe that I have found the exact book he is looking for and that we can read and share together. Being that Scott Hahn is a convert to the Catholic faith, there is no lack of citation to Scripture along with integrating the customs and practices with one's Christian Catholic belief/faith. Should I find that it deviates from my experience I have had so far, I will re-review the book. For now, this review stands for what the book intends to deliver and we were looking to experience.

Mr.Hahn writes good apologies for all our activities in and out of church..it's useful "ammunition" when people criticize our Roman Catholic faith. I've learned some history, too. It's a very useful well written book.

This book is a travelogue, a coming of age story, a memoir, an ethnographic study and a study of colonial impact on native culture, when it's not being a comedy of manners. Very unusual, and consistently interesting. Kpomassie brings compassion, cheerfulness, and tolerance to his quest; but also a quiet and first-rate intelligence. Perhaps because he has grown up in a village he is able to take the most peculiar living arrangements in his stride, and his expectation of hospitality and sharing are met at almost every point in the book. What most impressed me was his clear-eyed attitude: he approaches the Inuit as an equal, as a fellow human being; and in turn, he pays them the compliment of treating them as complex human beings, not all bad or all noble; he sees in them both the sublime and the squalid. He is also, unsurprisingly, very attuned to the ravages of colonial suppression of native culture. I think anyone interested in anthropology would read this book with profit: it is that rare thing, an anthropology of equals. I'm grateful toNYRB for publishing this gem.

Many obvious ironies occur as Tete-Michel Kpomassie, a young man from Togo in West Africa, makes a journey of discovery to Greenland. For the first sixty pages, the author describes life in Togo in lively detail and his decision to go to Greenland, a country as far, culturally, from Togo as it is possible to get. Over the course of ten years, he travels through Ghana, the Ivory Coast, Senegal, and Mauritania, before arriving in Marseille, Paris, Bonn, and eventually Copenhagen. During this time, he reads constantly, learning about life in other parts of the world, becoming fluent in German and French, and sensitively observing the differences between his culture and those of the other countries in Africa and Europe. By the time he gets a visa for Greenland, he is twenty-six, a highly skilled “anthropologist,” having learned what he needs to know through his own unconventional daily life.In June, sometime in the mid-1960s, he leaves at last for Greenland, ill-equipped but full of enthusiasm, trusting in his ability to make his way in that country and to become part of the Eskimo culture there. Leaving in a cargo boat with eight other passengers, he enjoys the long days of the midnight sun, which are then lead to ice floes and icebergs as he approaches Cape Farewell, the southernmost tip of Greenland. His arrival in “K’akortoq” is as exciting for the inhabitants as it is for Kpomassie: “So intense was the silence, you could have heard a gnat in flight.”The local inhabitants are universally hospitable, providing a place for him to stay and sharing meals and drink. Their children are allowed to do what they want, with little discipline. Though people work for most of the day when there is sunlight, they get “tanked up” early at night and celebrate all occasions, with a whole month dedicated to celebrating Christmas. The Inuit willingly provide him with the fur clothing he needs in the winter, and the women in the families with whom he stays make him the specially sized boots and garments that he needs.With a wonderful eye for the telling detail, Kpomassie observes the differences between the world in which he grew up, the world in which he has lived in Europe, and the world of Greenland. He becomes real, a stand-in for the reader who lives through his journey vicariously. The people he meets not only represent their culture but emerge as individuals through their interactions with him. Despite language differences, he is able to communicate and share their lives, and because of his honesty and his curiosity about their culture, he makes many friends. His eventual departure from Greenland is bittersweet, inspired by his “duty to help the youth of Africa to open their minds to the outside world.” His return to Europe and his later life as a citizen of the world, are testimony to his sense of adventure and his commitment to looking beyond the local to the universal.

Michel Kpomassie writes an interesting biography about growing up in a family that worships pythons in Anecho, Togo and then getting the dream of exploring the Arctic in the mid-twentieth century. While he never reaches the North Pole, his friendships with the Inuit peoples of Greenland draw out similarities and differences with his African heritage. He is conscious that he represents a formerly colonized people visiting another and does a good job of refuting stereotypes. Through his experience, this self-educated man earned a French university degree in anthropology and became a noted lecturer. His biography has been reprinted to celebrate a half century since his arrival in Greenland.

AN AFRICAN IN GREENLAND is the most remarkable travel journal I have read in a very long time. As a boy in Togo, Kpomassie was injured and while recovering read a book on Greenland that seized his imagination. The book recounts the events that led to this early obsession with Greenland, his efforts to reach the country and his travels in Greenland once he arrived. Kpomassie is a charming and honest narrator. He is at once perceptive, wry and compassionate in his account. He describes his travels and interactions with various cultures with almost anthropological detail and yet he never forgets the people he meets are human, wonderfully flawed perhaps, but human nonetheless. He turns his critical eye on his Togolese upbringing, his time in France, Germany and Denmark and ultimately Greenland. He never neglects to mention his own foibles, in his interactions in the lives of those he meets. (How could he not since he was the first African most of the Greenlanders had seen.) The story is also tinged with sadness for the loss the customs and rituals Kpomassie had hoped to witness in Greenland, the combined poverty and generosity of the people and the inevitable sorrow of ending a journey. It is a fascinating study of Greenland but also a study of a man pursuing a dearly held dream and that is what makes it such a satisfying read.

I was reminded of those admonitions as I began to read Excellence Wins. He helped to grow it from zero luxury hotels to fifty-five in eleven countries.Schulze includes hundreds of anecdotes that illustrate an observation -- "God is in the details" -- attributed to a number of different people, most notably to architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe (1886–1969). An earlier form, "Le bon Dieu est dans le détail" ("the good God is in the detail") is generally attributed to Gustave Flaubert (1821–1880). The details that Schulze cites have a secular rather than a religious significance. They serve as examples of ladies and gentlemen throughout the Ritz-Carlton organization serving the guests, other ladies and gentlemen, who are entrusted to their care.Long ago, Caesar Ritz said that he and his associates were committed to providing superior service to hotel guests that is "invisible." That is only possible when rigorous attention is paid to the details. It all begins with the process of creating great employees: "first, [begin italics] selection [end italics]; next, inspiring [begin italics] orientation [end italics]; then, initial [begin italics] teaching [end italics] of specific job functions; finally, [begin italics] sustaining [end italics] what has been taught." In order to strengthen this process, Schulze wrote 24 "Service Standards" (see pages 121-127) and every day before each of the three staff shifts begins, the leader "reads one standard, makes comments about what it means, and maybe tells a story or reads a relevant customer comment to show the standard in action."I am deeply grateful to Horst Schulze for sharing this account of his personal growth and professional development. As he would be among the first to point out, an organization is only as great as its people, at all levels and in all areas of the given enterprise.
