This is the only â€œabout law schoolâ€ book I will whole heartedly recommend.McClurg is the first author I read that seems to understand that the majority of law students will not be going to a top 15 school. There are over 200 ABA accredited law schools in the US and it seems that most books about law school are geared towards the top 10% of schools and forget that the other 90% of people need more practical advice other than how to apply for Yale - Georgetown.McClurg gives a good glimpse into what law school will be like for the majority of students.From addressing the topicals fears incoming students have to tips on how to succeed (spoiler alert: there are no short cuts in law school!) and the real life impact law school has on your life. McClurg even includes a chapter on non-traditional students because he understands that a number of law students are not â€œhigh-school to undergrad to lawâ€ people. We have had families and jobs/careers and maybe will be working while in school.Where as other books will suggest you move in with your parents and have them help you pay for school this book understands that most of its readers will not have that option.This book is a MUST HAVE for anyone thinking about going to law school or anyone preparing to start their L1 journey.Let McClurg be your guide to note taking, outlining, exams, case-briefing, and the Socratic method. He will do so with humor and understanding.

First I should point out that the negative review (the only negative review I saw in comparison to the astounding number of wonderful reviews, I might add) should be disregarded because unless a person is a freak of nature and a Sheldon Cooper-type genius, he or she will undoubtedly have questions and fears the first year of law school. Many brilliant people enter law school and they did not get there by being idiots, so if they had questions and fears, you will have them as well. It is absolutely normal. Moreover, law school is about being prepared for any and every situation, so it is never too early to start preparing. I should also point out how very important it is to pick up this book if you are about to begin your first year of law school. Having a reliable and easy-to-understand guide before law school is not a suggestion, it is a necessity. Those who have read this little jewel will know what to expect and will be prepared to take on the indescribable experience of being a 1L. If you are entering your first semester as a 1L, you will need some idea of what to expect in relation to the Socratic method, legal writing and all those things you will experience in your first year. If you go into law school without a clue how to write a law school essay exam, a legal memo, etc., or if you have never heard of IRAC, you will have serious struggles. Do yourself an enormous favor: purchase this book and read it from front to back cover and take some notes because I can promise you will need this information, and contrary to expectations, there will be little time spent on teaching you any of this once classes begin.As a law student I have read several law school guides and have yet to find one that compares to 1L of a Ride. In fact I have found that many of them, even those written by other professors and lawyers, are incomplete as they fail to describe exactly what a 1L will need to know about writing in law school in a way that can be understood by someone who has never briefed a case or taken a law school exam. On a side note, if you made As in undergrad writing courses, you are most likely NOT going to have the same experience in law school relying on those same writing skills and styles; you WILL need to prepare yourself for a complete writing skill makeover and you will need to start learning immediately because writing in law school is absolutely nothing like writing in any other field or profession, and to try and use those same writing methods and skills in law school is a death sentence. But there is much hope even for those who have already begun law school. It seems there is one Professor on the planet who has not forgotten his 1L experience and who has accomplished the difficult task of communicating what 1Ls should know in a way that can be understood rather easily. Moreover, Professor McClurg is witty, sarcastic and genuine and he has a unique, hilarious way of communicating the concepts you need to know. This book will keep you laughing from the first to the last page and I can assure that you will have many page corners bent and many marks, notes and highlights throughout your copy of 1L of a Ride before you are finished reading.I recommend this book to anyone and everyone, law student or not. This book is a great source for anyone who has thought about law school, anyone who is in law school and ESPECIALLY for those who are about to begin the first year of law school, and it most certainly will help tutors and professors who are teaching 1Ls as it seems that the experience of the first year of law school is often forgotten (or perhaps becomes a repressed memory for some, depending on the insanity level of the experience) by many seasoned law students and professors. I would also recommend this book to family members of law students who would like to have an idea of what their loved ones are experiencing as law students.Bottom line: this is one of if not THE very best, most comprehensive and informative sources available to anyone interested in law. Professor McClurg listens to his students and appreciates their experiences, and his book continues to serve those who read and follow his guidance.

Professor McClurg reveals what it's like to attend and succeed law school before you get there. This book opens your eyes to the good and bad sides of law school. From how to handle the extraordinary amounts of stress, to how to mesh life as a 1L with your normal life--1L of a Ride gives you a great 'what to expect' guide for all of this and more. Backed by empirical evidence as well as student testimonials, you see the real, objective side of what it's like during the first year of law school. I myself am a soon-to-be 1L at the University of Memphis (where McClurg is a prof.) and I found it extremely beneficial to me that the book is backed up by testimonials from many UM students. After reading this book, I feel confident that I know what to expect and ultimately succeed in law school. I recommend this book for any student going to law school. You will see the good, bad & ugly of what to expect, but ultimately you will feel more prepared for the rigors that await you.

This is a really great 1st year guide. I love the tips and tricks. There is a LOT of "well, duh." moments... I.e. get to know your professors, do your homework, be prepared for class, etc... I would say the first 5-6 chapters could have been summed up in 2 chapters... However, the chapters that begin teaching you how to brief and what to look for are incredible. The rest of the book is also very helpful. Since it didn't take super long to read the first 5-6 chapters, I'd still give this a 5 star, even though you could easily skim this info.

I have less than a month to prepare for the unknown unknowns of law school, so I grabbed both an ecopy and paperback version of 1L of a Ride. This book has gone a long way towards dispelling me of the myths I didn't even know I believed, and preparing me for the rigors of student life again after a break of several years. The writing style is accessible, informative, and humorous without being distracting. I highly recommend this to anyone starting law school, whether in a month or in a year.

A must read before starting law school. As I enter 3L year, I still find myself going back to this book for advice and guidance. Tab the book as you read and even type notes from it. I promise it will help you navigate your first year and even after that.

I always look forward to these books **see pics**. The Lonely Planet books are always high quality with sometimes even too much information. Even as a frequent traveler to London (at least once a year) I still found tips and things to do and see to make each trip feel just as new. Ok once you leave Heathrow. That never seems to change.The four sections in the book, with color coded page edges, are:1 - Plan Your Trip (Red)2 - Explore (Blue)3 - Understand (Green)4- Survival Guide (Grey)Planning is straight forward with quite a bit of information that could be considered Explore as well. Explore is broken into sub sections (the tabs are in groups down the page edges) for different areas of London. You have to understand how dense London is with things to do. Each part feels like a different experience. Neighborhood walks are even outlined and mapped to save you the effort of trying to map it all out.The Survival Guide section is the quick go to for major information. Airports, tours and a general listing of things like hospitals, money, etc are broken down quickly. I think they could cross link the Planning with the Survival to make it even more useful.Lastly there is a fold out map as updated as the release of the book. I took a picture of that for you as well so you can see how large it is. If I could add a tip for you, download the Tube app to your device and update regularly (daily) to get all the Tube closures and changes while there. It is a huge help and timesaver. The map is great with the markers and side information.Note that you can get this book in digital format to make it easy to search and carry around with the Kindle app. I happened to get the hard copy for the review. Overall Lonely Planet rocked it again with the new London version.

I love the Lonely Planet guides and use them everywhere I go. I am planning a trip to the UK for this summer and will be in London for a few days before I leave (thankfully I have been to London twice in the past so I've already seen most of the Must-Sees). This guide to the capital city is unsurpassed - it covers almost every conceivable place you might want to go with admission info, tube station info, hours of operation, etc. as well as great maps and, in some cases, 3-D "images" of such places like the Tower of London. There are also floor plans of sites like St. Paul's Cathedral and the British Museum. I will not be leaving home without this book as well as Lonely Planet England and Lonely Planet Scotland's Highlands and Islands. Invaluable and the best guides there are!!

Excellent walking tours, with a few deviations to fit in some other highlights, made for a wonderful 5 days in London! It would great if the digital version of the book could send the walking tour to the map apps, rather than having to flip between the two to ensure you are on the correct street!

This was my bible for our 2 week London trip. I love how it's broken down by parts of town because it allows you to stay within an area and see what you want without bouncing around and wearing yourself out. It really helps for making your daily visit list! Worth every penny especially for the food recommendations.

I'm sure the book is very good (I'm a big Lonely Planet fan) but the formatting on both my phone and the cloud reader was so awful that it's hard to read, and to find stuff. I returned the eBook and ordered the paperback version instead.

Lonely Planet are always great guides - just make sure that it has been reasonably recently updated. They publish them about every 3-4 years so many establishments listed may not be in business if the edition you plan to purchase is more than 1-2 years out of date.

Love this book and all the suggestions. The index could be a little more accessible and robust (it's located near the back, not at the back and seems to leave out a lot of things featured in the book) but otherwise, great travel guide.

Good read for my upcoming trip. I was able to highlight the sights that suit my interest. Well written and covered all neighborhoods in London.

This is a fun book. There is no great depth in the text explaining the photos but it is all about the pictures. I do offer a slight caveat. More than a few of the facts associated with the photos are incorrect. I noticed at least 6 errors without any need to double check. My theory is that most of the data were found using a simple web search and there was no effort to fact check. Some offenses are simply blatant. For example,the price of a current version Maserati Gran Turisimo is listed in what I can only assume as being in Australian dollars or a more direct offense is where an 8 cylinder Lamborgini Jalpa is listed as being a V10). That aside I find myself enjoying the photographs and making mental tick marks as to what cars I want in my garage some day.Even if you cannot read English (in which case you would not be reading this review) this book is a worthwhile and fun purchase for any petrol head if simply for the collection of photos.

This is a good book. I like it not only because there's good information in it about different cars, but it also tells me how fast cars go that I have models of! For example, one of the cars you can find in this book is the Ferrari FXX. That one has a top speed of 243 mph! Another example: the Alpine-Renault A110, which has a top speed of 130 mph. Even if you can't afford even one of the cars in this book, think this: at least you can have good pictures/models of them. Also in this book is the Jaguar XJ220, whose top speed is 220 mph. You can also see the Bugatti Veyron--which has a top speed of 268 mph. And just so many more! A good book to have!

This is not a high quality product for the car connoisseur; however, it is ok for kids under 12

My oldest grandson loves cars and this book has so much to engross a young car lover, Thank you offering this.

My teenage son is a huge fan of sports cars, especially Lamborghinis and such. He loves flipping through and deciding whether or not he agrees with the decisions made by the authors - and, for the most part, he does. This is a high-quality, truly beautiful book - with all the right cars to make a car-lover happy.

Great photos of numerous high-end cars. The book contains various info about the cars. I have read other review(s) that claim the info is not entirely correct. That doesn't matter a whole lot to me...as long as it's close. I can do further research if I want particulars. The book is good to start conversations and gives you a good idea of what "dream" cars are out there.

Great gift for a car lover.

I got this book for my 12-year-old son for Christmas, and he LOVES it. Reads it all the time. If you have a kid/teenager who is a sports car fan, this is a great book to buy for them.

After five choices where it ended in a pool of the protagonist's blood, my 6-yr-old grew weary. After one round of dying, my husband said he probably would have died with the other choice, and sure enough, we went back and the other choice was an equally devastating death. The stories seemed abruptly short with little character or plot development. A different choose you own adventure book, "Treasures of the Forgotten City" is a longer read to get to the end, but captivates his attention more and give a head's up on the cover that there are 17 perils out of a possible 26 endings. There is enough intrigue and tension to keep him wanting to read even if it ends in a peril.

I ordered this book after looking at reviews for other "You Choose" books in this series, hoping I would be pleased too. I am. As a homeschooler, I was looking for a high interest book for my third grade son as we study the Middle Ages. I'm very pleased with this book--aesthetically, it's quite visually appealing. I was expecting just pulp fiction pages, but the pages are glossy and include color pictures throughout. At the end, there are several resources including a glossary, timeline, index, bibliography, "Read More," and "Other Paths to Explore" sections. Looks great--can't wait to show it my son.

My 10 year old twins love this series of books. They are fashioned after the choose-your-own adventure type books. You get to make choices and then turn to the pages that it tells you to and see what happens next. Keeps kids guessing and going back to see what can happen over and over. Love this book along with others in the series. I didn't receive anything for my opinion.

This series actually got my 9 year old grandson, who is into electronics and not books, to ask my for two more titles for Christmas and an additional two for his birthday. He loved the way the decision was his and he could read and re-read to choose a different path.

Sent this to my grandson for Christmas because he loves to read these series of books. He was really surprised and couldn't wait to read it! It arrived in perfect condition and just in time for Christmas.

I have a group of boys in my 3rd grade classroom who are very picky readers. It has been a challenge this year to find things that they are interested in reading. ALL of them read and loved this book and immediately asked me if I had any more like it! In my opinion, that rates five stars!

Once again, Eve Bunting does her magic.Through the eyes of a child, readers will learn about how Jews celebrate Chanukah as well as hear a retelling of how some Holocaust survivors cherished the celebration of Chanukah in Buchenwald. Passing the story from one generation to the next reaffirms the importance of following traditions.While some prior reviewers have pointed out some questionable flaws, the overall positive messages of hope and perseverance prevail. The book does an excellent job of touching on age appropriate information regarding the Holocaust.

Beautifully told and exquisitely illustrated....We join a family on the first night of Chanukah. As Grandma has done every year, she explains their family Chanukah minhag (custom) which started during the Holocaust, "the bad time."When she and her sister, Great-Aunt Rose were young girls (twelve and thirteen), they were interred in Buchenwald -- probably the largest Nazi concentration camp inside Germany.When the youngest granddaughter asks why they were put in the camp, Grandma says, "The Germans didn't like the Jews." -- an attempt to trying to explain the inexplicable -- the Holocaust -- to children.Continuing the story, Grandma tells how she and her sister prepared for Chanukah by smuggling ("organizing") margarine, matches, and a potato into their barracks in order to be able to kindle one light for the holiday.Now, in safety and surrounded by family, Grandma once again hollows out another potato, pours oil into the cavity, and lights a threaded wick.L'chayim! To life!NOTE: The candle in the chanukiyah in the illustrations is on the wrong side. Chanukah candles are placed from right to left and lit from left to right. Perhaps this can be corrected in future printings.

I agree with other reviewers that it is a pity that Ms. Bunting's editors didn't assign someone knowledgeable to review the text and help the artist with moon phases and menorah placement. The children are baffled and horrified at the idea that anyone would be imprisoned, starved, killed, "just because..." - and even more aghast when we point out that the hate and killings continue now with Jews AND other ethnic/religious groups. The narrator's musings at the end of the story as to why Grandma wants to remember such a painful time in her life allow us to look at what we have to remember to keep it from happening again.

With dark brown and violet pastels, the authors tell the story of a Hanukkah celebration in a suburban Tudor home. Families gather, cook, celebrate, and eat. Sitting at the table with china and knit kippahs and nice glassware, they serve a beef brisket, latkas, and sour cream and apple sauce. I will assume that the sour CREAM is non-dairy, or else some Maccabees would have attacked this home as they did the Greco-Assyrians. But, I digress. Grandma takes out a raw potato. Was it for grating? No. Grandma and Great Aunt Rose tell the story of their first night of Hanukkah in the Buchenwald death camp. They risked their lives to steal a potato, and even though they were starving, they used it to make a candle to celebrate the holiday. They all place it next to the menorah, walk to the wintery yard, and watch the glow. They drink l'chayim under a full moon (although there can never be a full moon during the eight days of Hanukkah, since it has to be a darkened new moon (ooops!). A story of courage and triumph and family, yet with a few errors which can be turned into a learning opportunity when reading it to your kids

This story shows how each family can add its own memories to a traditional celebration, blending in things that make it more meaningful. In this incredible Hanukkah story, we see a layer of family history presented as part of the larger faith drama. This is emphasized in the art as well -- powerful duotone-like drawings are integrated with the full-color illustrations, giving the feeling of the past coming to the table with the stories told. I was particularly struck by the incredible faces in this picture book -- they are so alive with individuality, authenticity, and emotion.One customer reviewer has commented on the brisket and sour cream as being "nontraditional." I find this as a plus, personally. The traditional applesauce IS there (this reviewer must not have noticed), yet the family is not presented as a stereotyped cliche -- they have brought their own traditional dinner in with the rest of their Hanukkah foods and the one potato, which becomes the one candle, representing their struggles to maintain their faith, hope, and traditions alive through a Holocaust death camp.Considering the topic, this could be a hard book to read, but it is not -- it is sensitively told, a celebration of strength and resisliency, determination, family and faith. If there is a problem with how the menorah is lighted (I can't say), that would be a shame and should be corrected in reprintings, but I feel that the power of the book lies elsewhere and should be appreciated for its fullness.

Beginning with humane slaughter, Danforth takes us traveling though knife sharpening, knot tying, the physiology of animals and meat, the microbiology of aging and spoilage and on through 400 pages of info on every imaginable topic related to butchering. The only fault I would mention is aesthetic. I find many of the photos that accompany us every step of the way to be harsh and unattractive, something to do with the lighting, I think. But if you do any sort of large-scale meat preparation you should be able to put aesthetics aside and concentrate on the educational value of the photos.I received "Butchering Poultry, Rabbit, Lamb, Goat, and Pork: The Comprehensive Photographic Guide to Humane Slaughtering and Butchering" by Adam Danforth (Storey Publishing) through NetGalley.com.

This book describes the setup, tools, steps and details of on-farm processing of livestock animals, and the subsequent butchering, packaging and storage of the same.If you are looking at your own on-farm slaughter, then this book walks you through everything you need to know: tools, location, setup, killing, bleeding, evisceration, skinning (or scalding hogs/plucking poultry), cooling, cutting into primals, breaking down sub-primals, cutting individual portions, and finally packaging and storage. If you are looking to process an already-slaughtered animal (from a processor), then the handling of the carcass is also handled exceptionally well.The book covers a lot of territory. The slaughter operations is detailed, and the photos are clear and descriptive. For those who might be looking for a "coffee table book", please skip this one. The pictures are quite detailed and many are not the least bit appropriate for the squeamish.Slaughter is covered for pig, goat, lamb, chicken, duck, goose and some more I probably forgot. You learn those and you can tackle most anything (note that there are no "game" processing in here - it does not cover deer processing through the book would absolutely help you there, as well).Likewise, lots of detailed pictures on butchery of a carcass. There are useful and engaging sections on the biology and chemistry of muscle and aging - from rigor mortis through outright decay. The trick is to find the happy middle, and this book gets you there by discussing proper aging techniques and times, as well as what to look for and what to expect.The book shines especially for on-farm or homesteader operations. The slaughter pictures are absolutely spot-on for these crowds: all pictures are "in the field" and assume nothing more than the average farmer might have: tractors, loaders (for big animals), etc. The author does not assume you have a concrete bunker/abbatoire, walk-in coolers or flash freezers.Sanitation and hazard control are priorities, and much time is spent walking through the ways the farmer or at-home processor can significantly decrease the risks and issues inherent in processing of freshly slaughtered animals. That said, this is not a USDA facility prep guide. You cannot sell this stuff to the public without going through state or federal processes (and in some cases, facilities).What I like about this book most is the realistic and pragmatic understanding of what on-farm processing entails. For instance, when discussing aging it talks about the optimal aging experience (cooled, controlled and monitored chilling and aging for specific times) and then dives right into the issues many face: no way to guarantee those conditions using "natural" cooling (cold night after a daytime slaughter). The author gives about as clear guidance as possible here: based on conditions, in many you need to process immediately rather than risk bacterial spoilage. You cannot control the weather, but you can control spoilage.On the downside, the hardcover pages feel like they might eventually slip out from their bindings.I am not new to these topics. I have slaughtered several species on-farm using many of the same techniques. I am also state-certified and inspected for poultry (big livestock must go through the feds if you plan to sell the end product). But the book is quite valuable because I was able to get ideas to do some things better, and also learned some things I have never tried. Also, I never tire of seeing people do the same thing I do, in different ways.Another great good point for this book: no recipes that fill pages. If I wanted a cook book, I'd buy one.Summary: if you are thinking of slaughtering your own animals - or butchering one that was slaughtered for you - then this book is going to get you through those steps on its own. It is the singular best source for this information I have yet found. If you have done ti before, this book will almost surely give you ideas and advice that will help. For the cost of a decent knife, you get a great resource at your fingertips.

I won a LOT of backyard homestead type books. Thus, I have pretty high expectations if it's going to go on my 'essential/favorite' list. This book exceeds my expectations. We have already processed rabbits and chickens on our small acreage prior to getting this book, and this book covers that well. What we were totally intimidated by was the idea of butchering the goats, sheep and pigs ourselves. Now we are 100% confident we can do out on our own and do it properly. There are literally pictures of every step, every cut, detailed explanations, etc. I am normally a cheapskate and buy books used as I did in this case. This is a rare exception where I would be willing to pay full price for this book if I ever need to replace it. Thank you for such an amazing resource!

I had always wanted to raise my own meat for my family. We started with chickens and had no problems doing since I have been a duck and pheasant hunter since a boy. Then came the sheep which I was a little more skeptical doing without gaining more knowledge. So I bought this book and not going to lie probably one of the most interesting books I have ever read. Not only does it provide you with information presented on title of this book, but so much more from why chicken meat is white and other meats are red. How to get the most tender cuts. Pre-butchering and caring for the animal to yield the best quality carcass. Form cuts and make them presentable. etcAnd a little tip, while others may disagree is to buy the e-book. 1. it's cheaper. 2. my cell phone is always on me so if I need to reference something in the book while I am in the field or the yard or really anywhere. I personally prefer regular books normally, but e-book just seemed more practical.

This should be the model for any how-to book. The photographs as very clear and descriptive and the writing is eminently readable and engaging. The author stresses the humane and most gentle methods of rendering the life from the aimals and, aside from the moral issue, the effect stress has on the finished product. Humanely treated animals produce better meat. Danforth explains the chemical a biological reasons for that.Everything he mentions in the text is amply illustrated with the photography. Again, this is the way to write and produce any instructional book.

Although this is a beautiful book with clear, detailed photographs and alot of good "general" information, I found it to be frustratingly incomplete for processing poultry - and that was precisely what I needed detailed instruction on so, this book was not as helpful as it could have been with just a bit more detail, additional photographs and description.

An interesting book which which however contains a lot of material that is highly speculative and/or inconsistent. Naranjo's pictures of the types are interesting and indeed despite being an old hand at the Enneagram, I believe I've learned or gained a few new perspectives from his portraits of the types; some of his ideas are fairly out there however, including a secondary axis (a 4-point-difference line linking e.g. 7/2 around point 9, masochism/sadism for 4/8, etc ) which appears to be not especially well-founded. He also has alternative mapping to Jung and Myers-Briggs which however don't always match those theories purported mapping (for instance, he pegs Five as INTP and 'introverted sensation' (?!), when in Myers-Briggs INTP matches introverted-thinking. He also matches types to homeopathic personality types and the old endomorph/mesomorph etc. theory of personality which I believe is (or should be) long discredited. Overall his work as would be expected matches Palmer's view rather than e.g. Riso's (For instance, Threes are characterized as one of the nicer types by Naranjo). I recommend the book but it requires careful thought.

This is not a simple read, but it's worthwhile if you want to understand the psychological basis of the Enneagram. It's all related back to text book psychology/psychiatry. Interesting, but not one you can blaze through and learn the Enneagram quickly. I would suggest reading this after you have some background in the Enneagram system.

The book is a great view of the enneagram - from a central "passion" for each of the types. It gave me another perspective on my own type and enable me to better identify with that type.However, the book is written for a specific audience: practicians in psychology field.The psychology vocabulary used is sometime hard to understand - but google can remedy to that (note that some words can't even be found in the default Kindle dictionnary).All in all, still a great ressource for ennegram typing and understanding.

Claudio Naranjo logra integrar en su visión sistémica de la personalidad, tanto las posturas enrgéticas y libidinales (Freud) las posturas relacionarles objetables (Klein) y la tradición psicológica conductal, para dar una visión ecléctica de la personalidad, que dejará a más de uno sorprendidos.

Way too intellectual for the average person. Sentences are a paragraph long. Hard to read. Sorry dude.

Naranjo is a verbose man. Still, quite a necessary read for those serious in their enneagram studies. This would be best read in conjunction with Maitri's books.

It's so interesting! I literally dream about reading it when I'm not and a day without flipping a page in it is wasted.

I have read 8-9 enneagram books and have frankly gotten tired of the whole system. But after finally buying Naranjo's book I see the application of it as a legitimate system within transpersonal psychotherapy. Few other authors of the enneagram have any valid credentials to teach this system. Great book.
