I just finished For the Beauty of the Church. Dang it, it is going to be an expensive book. I have already ordered two more copies.As a woman, a working artist and a believer my relationship with the church has been a love/hate relationship. So often I have been unable to articulate the struggle. David Taylor has brought together a varied group to give voice to the struggle. Not just a group talking theory, but individuals in the trenches. I was registered to attend the conference in Austin where these ideas were first presented, but I was unable to attend (a new baby and allergy season in Texas took me out!) I am thrilled to have this resource in my hot little hand. I read. I cried. I underlined vigorously. I wrote comments in the margins. I read more. I ordered another two books and when my budget recovers I will order more. (Merry Christmas friends and family.)For the first reading Barbara Nicolosi's chapter was my favorite as it brought healing to my heart. As the seasons change other chapters will rise to the forefront. I know that I will go back to this book to remind myself that the battle is worth fighting, and that the struggle, as Jeremy Begbie so eloquently reminds us, has an end and that it might behoove us to think from the end to the present. I am so PROUD of Eugene Peterson for not only admitting he has artist friends, but that artist friends are worth having, YOU GO EUGENE! Barbara Nicolosi's chapter reminded me that what is do is not a waste of time, energy or emotion. Joshua Banner's description of a pastor involved in one's arts career, in a positive way, blew my mind. I can not even imagine, but wow, what a concept. Hope stirred. And David Taylor did a delightful wrap up. Context, context, context! David is a master encourager.It is a good book. It was an easy read. "For the Beauty of the Church" will bring understanding into the Body of Christ.I have art in 54 nations yet at any moment I question whether or not I am "really" an artist. There is so much pain in the world, at any moment I can question the value of arts. It is difficult, at least for me, to balance the truth of it all, that what I do is worth doing. In the church environment where results and numbers are held in such esteem, it is hard to quantify beauty. I am very thankful for this collection of essays and their pointing to a truth beyond statistics.I am gonna go paint now.

This was recommended to me by an artist friend after several conversations on the topic. A helpful little book for those who might be unfamiliar with the conversation but are concerned with learning. Unfortunately, the book's greatest strength is also its weakness. I appreciated the variety of perspectives from across the spectrum evangelicalism and valued the inclusion of a Roman Catholic voice. However, this causes the quality of the chapters to be a bit uneven, some are more engaging than others. With that being said, all of them are worthy of your time and consideration. Especially if you're looking to understand the basics of the intersection between the life of the church and the work of the artist

This is the kind of book I will be thinking about, talking about, recommending, giving to friends, and re-reading regularly for many, many years. The essays collected and edited in this volume each stand alone as relevant, helpful, well-crafted works around the topic of art and the church. Taken together, they form both a manifesto on the beautiful kinship between the arts and the church, and a manual for how to best foster that kinship. One of my favorite things about the book was the rich diversity in the ideas presented. Taylor has gathered a blend of voices, each speaking thoughtfully from their varied perspectives on topics for which they are perfectly suited. And yet, even though the authors are diverse in age, experience, and background, the book maintains a sense of continuity and flow throughout its entirety.I would highly recommend this book to anyone, but especially to a few specific folks:-all those in pastoral or worship ministry-artists of all kinds-believers who feel no connection to the arts, and wonder why churches should bother with them at allWhether you are a pastor, an artist, or someone who has serious doubts about the connection between church and art, this book is an absolute must-read.

Some thot provoking essays, very good read on Christian faith and the arts. Especially liked the final essay from Begbie. Might want to consider getting Begbie’s book or Crouch’s book instead of this collection, but this is a good intro, nonetheless.

As a worship/creative arts director for a church, I greatly appreciated this book.The chapters are all written by different authors with different perspectives on the arts. I found all of them to be helpful in painting a picture of the need, call, theory, and implementation of arts in the local church.It's an easy but satisfying read, I'll be using this with my arts teams!

A great collection of essays. I use this material in teaching worship pastors and leaders in undergraduate courses. It covers many different aspects of worship theology and its practical application for the church.

I homeschool so am always on the lookout for great books that are living and tell history as it was. This was a really moving book about two boys at the battle of Gettysburg. While they did focus more on Gabe, the boy on the Union side, I really felt it was beautifully shown how boys in the Civil War served and yet were still boys. My kids didn't make a sound while I read it (ages 8 & 6). The illustrations are BEAUTIFUL.

Part of American history has to do with Abraham Lincoln, slavery and The Civil War. In the past, I have found it to be difficult to teach these themes to third and fourth graders in an understandable way. A couple of years ago, I found "Pink and Say" -a story about two very different boys at the time of the Civil War. Now, there is "The Last Brother" - also about two boys. The difference here is that in "The Last Brother", both boys are on different sides of the war, both are buglers for their regiments, and both could easily die on the battlefield - at the age of 12. You can hear a pin drop when I read aloud - I would suppose that the whole story is too close to home to ignore. There are extraordinary illustrations that are deserving of a Caldecutt medal. I allow unlimited time after reading for lively discussions.

Used this book with my students at school. Bought this copy for my own use at home. Read it to my oldest granddaughter when we were visiting Harper's Ferry, WV and Gettysburg, Pa this summer. All the books in this series are wonderful to read to children from ages nine to twelve. My students sit and listen intently when I read it at school. :)

It was so refreshing to be able to read such a uniquely smart book to my upper-elementary/ middle-school kids. It was very age-appropriate on a topic that boys enjoy - the civil war. And the story is about an 11 year old, so the kids could try to put themselves in the main character's shoes. The entire story was interesting, but what made this book so special was the thought-provoking ending. It gave me chills. How nice it was to read a book that genuinely had a great story line. And the pictures on each page were fabulous. This is one that sticks with you!

I was pleasantly surprised at what a wonderful tale this books tells. I bought it for my 4-5th grade struggling readers to enhance their understanding of the impact of the Civil War on young people. It was a perfect match for that. I couldn't believe how beautiful the illustrations were: breathtaking! It's a picture book that fits the 3-5th grade (and above) readers.

Brainard Carey and his wife Delia Bajo co-founded Praxis, a collaborative that was invited to be part of the Whitney Biennial in 2002 and was given a solo show there in 2007. He has also shown at other venues around the world. Carey also runs a mentoring/educational business that helps artists write grants, exhibit, and advance their careers. He is the author of several books, including Making It in the Art World and New Markets for Artists, both published by Allworth Press. He splits his time between New York City and a studio in New Haven, Connecticut, where he has a radio show on Yale radio called "The Art World Demystified."

This is a very useful cookbook for the beginner's.This book is filled with nutritious and delicious recipes.Here you will find many recipes that are big on flavor,imaginative in their variety,and easy to make,featuring lots of fresh,natural and nutritious ingredients.I hope this book is able to help you very much.

I liked the selection of recipes sous vide. Thanks to this type of cooking, the dishes retain useful and nutritious substances. Especially piquant to taste were recipes from meat and fish.

I purchased the paper version of this book, which does not seem to have some of the recipes mentioned by other reviewers. In addition, all of the photos are in black and white other than the cover photo. There are numerous errors (including a "9lb 1 beef tenderloin, no bones, cut into two steaks" - better be pretty hungry to eat that 4.5 lb. steak). The main problem, however, is that the recipes just aren't that interesting/appealing. A quick Google search for "sous vide fish" or "sous vide duck" will bring up far more interesting recipes in seconds.

This is a must have sous vide cookbook. I have a serious number of cookbooks and a love of cooking and this book has risen to the top of my list. This book also allows me to understand where I have gone wrong in recipes that have previously attempted because the science is explained. The Super Easy Sous Vide is highly recommended.

Beautiful cookbook. Beautiful photos. The recipes are great, and really well explained. We were totally new to sous vide and decided to get some expert advice and suggestions. This book covered both of those items and we have thoroughly enjoyed this style of cooking as a result!

This is a Good Beginner's Sous Vide Book.I have been cooking sous vide for about a year now.One of the other wonderful things about this book is that she takes the time to include recipes from all parts of a meal. All are good, this one is better!

Still not sure I want to buy an immersion circulator, but Adele's recipes are so much like the meals we like that my mouth literally salivate when reading them. I will definitely use for the proportions of ingredients and for now use my cast iron or other methods to cook with.

I love this cookbook. I have been cooking sous vide for about a year now. There are many books with fancy recipes but this one is best for the great instructions and the fairly simple every day recipes.
