I purchased the castle and the construction site book for my 5 yo for Christmas, and they are some of his favorite books. He and I both love that he can look through the book and search for things on his own. I like that we can look together for fun scenes. I also really appreciate that the books are not hardcover. They will be great for a plane ride. In fact, I'm planning on purchasing several more for an international trip that we are taking.

As a classical educator, I tend to keep towards the best samples of writing and art I can find, but sometimes there are other books that have their place."A Year in a Castle" skips through the year (meaning it doesn't cover every month) telling a brief story -- moving in, wedding, Christmas, siege, etc -- and asking if your child can find this and that, but also suggesting your child keep his eyes out for the thief, check on what the prisoner is up to, and think about how each of these characters might tell their story of their life in the castle. With the break away sections to peek-a-boo at all aspects of life, it makes it easy to ask your child to tell you stories about the different people, to engage the imagination while introducing basic castle words (such as "bailey") and basic castle life. We had a lot of fun with this one

I ordered this book for my two youngest grandsons, but once I had it in my hands I was so amazed and fascinated that I'm having a hard time passing it on. This is easily the most creative, detailed and totally involving book I have ever seen. The concept of depicting the same view of the castle through successive seasons and events, and following the activities of the people inside and outside the castle, is brilliant! It's such fun to look for specific characters, or to peek into the interior and see how the servants, knights, cookstaff -- even the clever prisoner -- are behaving. There is no award high enough for this level of imagination and production. I am so excited to order other books in this series, but I expect they will be as difficult to give up when they arrive!

My son and I love reading this. The pictures and detail are super entertaining.

Great book, lots of fun to read to both of my kids (3 and 5) at night, each page asks you to try and find all of the characters and objects on the page, and each page is a different month of the year showing you how life at the castle changes over time. Pictures are crammed full of lots of tiny details that the kids love.

Lots of detailed pictures and interesting information. Fun to look for the things the text mentions. My 9-year old loves it.

This book had been a favorite with my kids (ages7,5,3) Even the 3 year old loves to look for things on each page.

I am the grandma and I bought one of these for my granddaughter and one for myself! This is an awesome book that show the history of long ago in a fun way!

Little Boy: A Novel, by Lawrence Ferlinghetti

Review

"A volcanic explosion of personal memories, political rants, social commentary, environmental jeremiads and cultural analysis all tangled together in one breathless sentence that would make James Joyce proud. . .[Ferlinghetti is] the silliest, angriest, kindest, smartest man you’ve ever heard — a whirling dervish of scholarly asides, literary allusions, corny puns and twisted aphorisms. . .No one alive carries the history, the writers, the personal experience of 20th-century literature in his mind as Ferlinghetti does. . .There’s something hypnotic about Ferlinghetti’s relentless commentary, a style that amuses him, too. . .If you're willing to let go, he'll win you over."—Ron Charles, The Washington Post"Lawrence Ferlinghetti has given us a slice of his cake in the form of a dense, daffy, and often delightful prose-poem. It’s a surging century’s worth of language that combines elements of memoir, journaling and comic wordplay, with hints of an alternative State of the Union address. . . A headlong rush of thoughts, memories and shameless whimsies. . . Happy birthday, Ferlinghetti. It’s a lot of candles. Strike another match across the night sky."—San Francisco Chronicle "A torrent of textual splendor. . . Everything Ferlinghetti has read, written, lived, experienced, thought and understood in his near-hundred-years on this planet has been tossed into the blender of his consciousness. Little Boy gives us the opportunity to watch as it all swirls in that blender, the blades slowly bringing all these disparate particles together into a more homogenous flow — everything connected, everything consequential, yet without direct plot or meaning (much like life itself). . .If Little Boy is just a dream, then it’s one you can easily get lost in. . .wandering one last time through the Coney Islands of an iconic poet’s mind."—The Los Angeles Times"As a poet, [Ferlinghetti] has rarely been a critical favorite. But his flexible and plain-spoken and often lusty work — he has published more than 50 volumes — has found a wide audience. . .[Little Boy] is a summing-up near the end of a big, wide, productive life."—Dwight Garner, The New York Times "Ferlinghetti is central to America’s literary and cultural life. How do you even begin to describe his many decades of achievement? Ferlinghetti has done it himself. Little Boy is a hallucinogenic stream-of-consciousness, autobiographical prose-poem. . .It’s a book full of the artists, poems, travel, loneliness, and joy in Ferlinghetti’s long life—the whole arc of his human experience passes in a sustained collage of images. . .An indelible wonder." —Barry Miles, Poetry"Little Boy may start off sounding like a conventional memoir, but before long, Ferlinghetti reclaims his beat soul, quickens the pace, dropping punctuation like a used-up booster rocket, and off we go on the last wild, motor-mouth, book-length riff of this poet’s generation. All finger-popping readers will be gleefully swept up in this hip word-flood, this spontaneous stream — no, make that torrent of consciousness. Bravo, maestro!” —Billy Collins, former U.S. Poet Laureate and author of The Rain in Portugal: Poems “A spiraling stream of consciousness that celebrates the divine transcendence of poetry and an all too human coming-of-agelessness. His mentoring example and love of the written word is illuminating and inspirational.” —Lenny Kaye, lead guitarist of the Patti Smith Group “Ferlinghetti has given us a uniquely revelatory book. At first his narrative was what I'd hoped it would be, and then his words turned, like lively flashing fish, into what he wanted it to be, so he could leisurely reel me in, ever so surely, to his sublime conclusion. Little Boy evoked my surprise and delight — thank you, Lawrence!—Ann Charters, author of the American Book Award-winning Women of the Beat Generation "A Goethean poly-directional consciousness on an exciting journey through time and space, Ferlinghetti’s unclassifiable act is delightful, tragic, magical. Here is seriousness at play with all the power of a spontaneous concert. Bravo Maestro Lawrence!"—Michael McClure, author of The Beard “One hundred years of Lawrence’s life dance and shimmer in breathtaking sentences that shine with the light of this great writer’s gorgeous imagination. Little Boy is a treasure.” —Diane di Prima, author of Memoirs of a Beatnik “Wonderfully effusive. . .stunningly evocative. . .This book is a Proustian celebration of both memory and moments that will delight readers.”—Publishers Weekly

Great book on the importance of data-driven decision making. While I have always been someone that has let the data do the talking, I haven't found an easy way to explain why. Super Crunchers is that easy way! Below I have summarized some of the important points of the book....Super Crunching is crucially about the impact of statistical analysis on real-world decisions. Two core techniques for Super Crunching are the regression and randomization.1. Regression will make your predictions more accurate (Historical approach):It all starts with the use of regressions, and although this method is a basic statistical test of causal relationship it's still a very powerful tool that I need to re-introduce in my analytical life.Regressions make predictions and tell you how precise the prediction is. It tries to hone in on the causal impact of a variable on a dependent. It can tell us the weights to place upon various factors and simultaneously tell us how precisely it was able to estimate these weights.2. Randomization and large sample sizes (Present/Real-Time approach):Reliance on historical data increases the difficulty in discerning causation. Large randomized tests work because the distribution amongst the sample are increasingly identical. Think A/B testing on steroids that allows you to quickly test different combinations! Boils down to the averages of the "treated and untreated" groups.Government has embraced randomization as the best way to test what works. Statistical profiling led to smarter targeting of government supportWith finite amounts of data, we can only estimate a finite number of causal effects3. Neural networkUnlike the regression approach, which estimates the weights to apply to a single equation, the neural approach uses a system of equations represented by a series of interconnected switches.Computers use historical data to train the equation switches to come up with optimal weights. But while the neural technique can yield powerful predictions, it does a poorer job of telling you why it is working or how much confidence it has in its prediction.Super Crunching requires analysis of the results of repeated decisions. If you can't measure what you're trying to maximize, you're not going to be able to rely on data-driven decisions. We humans just overestimate our ability to make good decisions and we're skeptical that a formula that necessarily ignores innumerable pieces of information could do a better job than we could.

Decision making permeates our everyday life. It ranges from the personal to the industrial and commercial where the process becomes costly and critical. Traditionally businesses resorted to intuition and the advice of experts to make a major decision. Lately, however, more and more decision making is relying on data analysis and the use of computer. In this groundbreaking new book, “Super Crunchers”, the author, Ian Ayre, believes that the days of making decisions by relying on intuitions are gone. Today’s best and brightest organizations are analyzing massive databases at lightening speed and gaining greater insights into our human behavior. They are the super crunchers. Companies like Google and Amazon have amassed huge data about our behavior. They know our tastes better than we do, they understand our children’s needs, they know all about the shoes and clothes we buy and wear. They even know how much we’ll pay for our flights and whether the fares will go up or down. They are a new breed of decision makers who are now calling the shots. But how do these companies arrive at such massive information. Obviously, they need a huge amount of data to get comprehensive conclusions, and the data should be as randomized as possible to avoid bias. Interestingly, such data is now available through specialized companies whose business is to collect figures from computer charts, store receipts, company reports and the like, and sell them to researchers. They have data on the size of our shoes, the foods we eat, the medicines we buy, the games we play and even the colors we favor. Once the data is collected, researchers use regression and statistical analysis to evaluate the effect of different variables on a commodity or a behavioral trend, e.g. does music in factories increase productivity? Would a salary raise improve employee loyalty…..? And so on.Putting This new data-analysis approach to many fields has made remarkable improvements. Consider the effect on the medical field. The rise of data-based decision making has reversed conventional wisdom. For example it showed that beta blockers can actually help cardiac patients and that estrogen therapy does not help aging women. Now there is a diagnostic program called “Isabel” which allows physicians to enter a patient’s symptoms into a computer and receive the most likely diagnosis. It will also tell the doctor the possible drug that caused the symptoms. Soon it will even specify the most likely therapy. No wonder many doctors are getting concerned about the possible loss of their control over diagnoses once considered a most important factor in their profession. How are we then to look at this groundbreaking approach to decision making? One cannot dispute its speed and efficiency. It is simply remarkable! Business has put it to beneficial use, but mostly to maximize its profits from the unaware consumers. Medicine stands to gain from it technically while also helping the patient financially and health-wise. But buyer be ware! There are no guarantees and consumers have to view it critically on a case-by-case basis in order to evaluate its risks and benefits.F.R. QUBEINNov. 2017

Anthony Lewis cut his teeth writing at the New York Times and spent a significant portion of his career there. In this slim book, he traces the history of free speech from the Founding era through the post-9/11 debates about what is appropriate boundary between free expression and national security, and oftentimes ends up discussing cases he had firsthand knowledge of.As Lewis points out, in the first decade following the American Revolution and the establishment of the Constitution, freedom of speech was not a significant issue. Most Americans were bound together, despite often extreme philosophical differences over governmental philosophy, and there were few attempts to oppress those on the opposing side. After John Adams succeeded George Washington to the presidency, however, the partisan chasm widened and harsh feelings grew. Allegedly fearing the tremors of the French Revolution and its possibility for chaos here (but really angered at Jefferson and his Democratic-Republican supporters), the Federalists in Congress passed the Alien & Sedition Acts of 1798 that criminalizes certain types of libelous speech by public figures, and the Adams administration signed off on them. Although relatively small by modern standards, dozens of Jeffersonians were arrested, tried, convicted, and then fined and/or thrown in jail. These actions produced such an uproar that they were soon rendered feckless by the American public, which swept Adams and the Federalists from power. Once Jefferson was inaugurated as president, he pardoned all of those prosecuted under the acts and remitted their fines. As Lewis notes, although the Supreme Court of the United States never ruled on the laws' constitutionality, today they would almost certainly be struck down as a violation of the First Amendment. In the next section, Lewis covers the persecutions during, and subsequent to, World War One. Unfortunately, this jump forward in time is perhaps my biggest criticism of the book. Although Lewis does give a two-page summary that says there was no federal law restricting speech during this time, he certainly was aware that there were prosecutions during that time for sedition, particularly during the Civil War. Even if he had given a brief summary of whether or not it was the focus of much academic study or discussion in state courts that thereby influenced federal law later on would have been welcomed. However, this is a minor flaw in my opinion. The central figure of the World War One-era free speech trials is Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr. A thrice-wounded hero of the Civil War, Holmes more than most could speak of what it took to defend or wreck a society, so when he reversed his prior stance of upholding the convictions of communists and labor organizers, it was a strong indication that federal government had gone too far. Lewis also discusses the origins of that famous phrase of law, "fire in a crowded theatre," which I particularly enjoyed. He does offer some criticisms of Holmes, however, noting that certain types of speech may have a cumulative effect that ultimately leads to criminal activity, rather than simply restricting prosecution to immediately approaching events as Holmes advocated. The next chapters cover the Red Scares of McCarthyism, attempts at suppressing the main speakers of the Civil Rights Movement, the protests over the Vietnam War, and some major cases of the modern era. Lewis notes that recently obscenity has been almost totally removed as a justification for speech restrictions, but I wish he had discussed more what caused society and the Court to change its mind on the issue, and also how governments have utilized new tools, such as zoning laws, to achieve the same effects. In his final sections, Lewis discusses where the future of free speech lies and this is perhaps where I have my strongest disagreements with him. In one part, he discusses the path of Europe and its embrace of laws criminalizing hate speech. While I understand that speech can produce serious consequences, I think it is a dangerous idea to throw someone in jail for what they say about a particular religious, ethnic, sexual, or national group, no matter how crude the language. He also discusses issues of national security and the Bush administration (and now Obama administration)'s efforts to combat terrorist activity. I share his concern that we are approaching a dangerous line in what types of activity we are forbidding and what is a justifiable cause for intruding into someone's privacy, but nonetheless I suspect we will not have an accurate idea of what really went on during the War on Terror for another fifty years. On the whole, I found this to be a great book for a layman. Lewis does not go into the more abstract parts of legal theory justifying free speech and unfortunately does not deeply detail the history of free speech leading up to the American Revolution. He does, however, provide the most important American cases on the subject and occasionally offers his own opinions (which I respect, if sometimes disagree with) without be pedantic. A great way to pass a weekend.

One of my favorite things about reading history is getting a perspective on how new some ideas are even when they feel like they've been around forever. This book absolutely has that effect... and it's a really healthy thing.Lewis does a nice job of laying out the history of free speech. He starts before the founding of the United States, but spends most of his time exploring the development of the right since the United States founding. What you see is how, even in two short centuries, the understanding of freedom of speech has evolved into what we take for granted today.Starting with the Alien and Sedition Acts during John Adams presidency and working his way forward, you really come to understand that the freedom of speech we enjoy today is far in excess of what citizens of the very same country enjoyed 200, 100, or even 50 years back. It's truly fascinating to get that perspective and it helps you to understand that rights can go as easily as they can come if they aren't defended vigilantly and vigorously.Highly recommended for fans of history or for anyone who wants to understand a little more about where one of America's fundamental rights came from. Lewis has written a clear, concise history of an idea and a right.

Unless a person goes to law school, it is unlikely that he or she will learn the 200 year old history of the First Amendment...yet is is a fascinating and necessary history to learn. The thesis of the book is that our common notion of what "freedom of speech and press" means in America is not self evident law. In fact, the author explains, our right to criticise the government and its leaders was developed and protected by "activist judges."Think about the role of activist judges - many of whom are criticised today in certain political circles. Anthony Lewis reminds us that American activist judges used the language that all persons are born free and equal to issue rulings that slavery was against the law as early as 1783. 150 years later it was again activist judges and lawyers who struck down the Espionage Act of World War I which punished speech against the war. So it was only in the twentieth century that the First Amendment was used to protect free speech and condemn a statute that infringed this liberty.Author Anthony Lewis takes us on a historical journey through First Amendment cases from its beginnings in the constitutional convention to its interpretation by the Jeffersonians and the Federalists to Woodrow Wilson's oppressive statutes, and finally to the more recent cases of flag desecration and the Patriot Act. Mr. Lewis is clear headed and forceful in his history and arguments. As I see it, this volume is one of the top 10 books on the law that I have ever read. I suggest it as a gift to your sons and daughters, to your high school or college students who care about what America means. Highly recommended.

Studying the First Amendment can be a daunting task for those who wonder where to get on. This book is the answer. Written in a lucid, straightforward and engaging style (Lewis covered the Supreme Court for the NY Times for many years, winning a Pulitzer in the process, and then wrote a Times column for years after that), it presents not only the history of freedom of speech and the press, but also its current controversies: should we crack down on free speech to combat terrorism? Where do we draw the line on press disclosures of national security issues? What are the values we need to preserve in the 21st century? A thoroughly expert, educational and thoughtful work by a first-class writer.

I recently ordered the full set of nine books of the Laura Ingalls Wilder classic Little House series and I am completely thrilled with what I received. After reading so many comments posted by disappointed reviewers, I was skeptical I would be able to get "the real deal" by ordering these from Amazon. The books I received are exactly as I remember owning as a child in the seventies..hardcover with a matching colored jacket, black and white illustrations by the wonderful Garth Williams and each one is everything they should be. In addition, I noticed that the copy of "Little House on the Prairie" is the updated and revised edition, which includes colored illustrations, a short bio about Laura, an introduction to how Garth Williams became the new illustrator for her books, a few songs and a collection of letters written in Laura's own hand. The pages of this book are crisper and whiter, with a bit of gloss on them similar to a higher quality coffee table style book, and the whole book feels a bit heavier than the others. These are truly the classic children's books you'll want to collect and share, and with each one less expensive than the printed cover price, the entire set of nine cost about $12 apiece, a bargain!I bought the entire series by choosing each one separately, rather than just looking for a full set. Even though I had to be careful to pick through all the paperback and kindle versions, after putting hardcover in the search box, you'll see all the titles listed individually. I plan to give them as a set to my niece, beginning her collection with "Little House in the Big Woods" for her sixth birthday this year.Don't be put off by the negative comments written by a few of the reviewers. Just take a little more time searching through the selections, and you'll get exactly what you want!

This has always been my favorite of the Little House books, probably because the Long Winter is behind them, the family is becoming more affluent, and there's so much happening. I love the cat and mouse fight and being part of the little claim shanty becoming a real house on a real farm. And, of course, I love Laura's new experiences in teaching and romance. If you liked any of the other Little House books, you'll like this one, too.

Once again I have heaved a great sigh, even though I am nearing the end of the series, and dread it's arrival, I am ready for the next book to start. This book though reminds me so much of my own journey through my teen years and the trepidation from the idea of starting my adult life away from the safety of home. Being "there" with Laura as she reached and triumphed over life's speed bumps, gave me the courage to face my own. It's why I think all young people should read these books.

I read all 9 of them. I'm 67 years old, but still found them to be very interesting. Life in the 1800s was hard, but these people endured it remarkably well. We of this age would be hard pressed to make it as successfully as they did. These books were inspiring because of the pioneer spirit and endurance. They helped too settle the west. Truly remarkable people. I would have been honored to have known them. I wish there had been more of these books than just the 9.

Just wonderful I never get tired of hearing of what that generation accomplished with perseverance and their values. It should be required reading in all elementary schools.

Not her best book in the series, it seems to go away from the former style of writing that you become accustomed to in the previous books. There is not as much detail of day to day life, instead skipping what seems to be long periods of time.

If the series is read in order, the book is a continuation of a time when people were, for the most part, kind and good to each other, when the family played the part of a complete unit where everyone looked out for everyone else - a better time. Like comfort food is good for the soul, so are the Little House books for the spirit. I love them.

My 4th grade teacher Introduced our class to The Laura Ingalls books in about 1967. My mother enjoyed them too. I recently read this and other Laura Ingalls books to my 96 year old mother before she passed on. Although her eyesight was bad, she enjoyed hearing me read the stories. She grew up in KS so could relate to what Laura described in the books. I highly recommend all Laura Ingalls books.

I got my new echo show this weekend and of course one of the plow right in but it’s a bit overwhelming. I searched on Amazon for a manual and came Across this one written by CJ Anderson. This guy got right to the point was clear concise and in layman’s terms.Although there’s a ton of information on the Amazon site it’s all in piecemeal and you have to flip back-and-forth to the videos. This made things a lot easier. I would highly recommend this manual.

A great guide to the ever popular Amazon Echo Show, The Amazon Echo Show: The Complete User Guide: Learn to Use Your Amazon Echo Show Like a Pro by C.J. Andersen is a great resource guide to anyone just learning to use their Amazon Echo Show. The book covers everything from simple features like the on and off button to how to sync the device to Smart House devices and troubleshooting. Although a lot of the information is repeated in multiple places throughout the book, the information in the book is simple to find and understand and includes resources on where to find the most up-to-date information about the Echo Show that upgrades every day that a book wouldn’t be able to keep up with. It is a handy resource if you own or are thinking of purchasing this device. The greatest strength of this resource book is by far the step by step and easy to understand instructions about how to sync other devices with the Echo Show as well as how to operate it. The book covers every device from music and books to syncing smart house features. There are several screenshots provided as well which helps to clarify where these features are. The book is divided up into sections so you can find what you are looking for easily as well. The author also did the legwork to find resources you can check to look for the latest features as they mention the device upgrades every day and there will be new things for you to learn to do that a print book couldn’t keep up with. The biggest drawback to the book for me was the repeated information throughout the book when I was reading it straight through. In all fairness, the author told us there would be repeat information and I understand that it was for the ease of being able to skip to a certain section to actually troubleshoot the device when you are actually using it but I still wish there was a better way to have divided up the chapters to save us from reading it through two to three times. Overall, this is a great resource book to review if you are using your Echo Show or thinking of purchasing one. It is very practical, easy to use and understand, and covers such a variety of topics thoroughly that it is easily worth the purchase. The author also mentioned that they would update the book as major adjustments were made to the Echo Show which is a win for everyone if they follow through but they also include resources that appear to be reliable for you to check for any immediate updates.

I’m not a very “techy” person. I don’t hate technology; rather I actually enjoy many of the new gadgets that are out there. The ones I have problems with are those that talk back to me and considering how much I argue with the Bluetooth lady in my car, I’m not sure how well Alexa and I would get along. My better half feels otherwise so that is how I found myself reading this guide about how to use the Amazon Echo Show and hoping that I can become boss over Alexa. Amazon Echo Show is honestly one of the most well written user guides that I have ever read. Mr. Andersen has managed to turn rather dry material into something that is easy to read and, for a technology guide, rather interesting. He starts from the beginning when you open the box of your new Amazon Echo Show and he writes about exactly what to expect and what should be included in the box. From there he gives very detailed instructions about how to set up the Echo. This is one of the things I liked about this guide. It is quite short, only one hundred and eleven pages on my tablet, but it is very detailed and organized. However, as detailed as it is, the instructions are still very easy to understand, no matter how technologically illiterate you may be.There are times when Mr. Andersen tends to veer off in a different direction that doesn’t always involve using the Echo. For example, he writes about the relationship between Amazon Echo and Google and YouTube. There is some correlation to how to use the Echo but it also doesn’t seem to be a necessity to have in the guide. For me though, I found all of the author’s tidbits quite interesting. There are lots of links that can be accessed straight from the digital copy which is quite convenient. There are also lots of pictures that will help the reader understand better the instructions that they are following. Finally, Mr. Andersen provides his email address so that if you still have any questions after reading the user guide you can email him. This shows me how much interest he takes in his readers. This is a wonderful user’s guide for all ages to read and well worth buying if and when you invest in the Echo Show.I read this in digital format and it worked well. The cover was bright and enticing.

This book is a concise, step-by-step, easy to follow guide to setting up and making the best use of your new Amazon Echo Show. The book has guides to so many things the Echo Show can do, like personal assistant capabilities, smart home capabilities, and ebooks and audiobooks. The tone of this book is easy to follow, and it offers step by step guides to all of the things you can do with your new Echo Show. I found all of these sections helpful, and felt like I learned at least one new thing in each one. In particular, this book has a strong section on Skills, something I didn't even know existed on the Echo Show.I would recommend this book for people who just bought the Echo Show and want an overview about the features of their new device, but it can answer specific questions, too, if you have them. I think that older people or people who aren't very technologically savvy could especially benefit from this book.
