Seven-hundred years later, the work remains a spiritual and poetic masterpiece, with much to say to our own age.At a time when churches are suffering a decline in membership and financial support, when many former churchgoers are looking for non-traditional ways to satisfy their spiritual needs, when rapid change and uncertainty encourage escape through self-absorption and material gratification, Marguerite offers an alternate path, but it is not one that New Age advocates, self-realization sects, or the burgeoning ranks of enthusiastic evangelicals are likely to find congenial.Annihilation of will and the melting into the “marrow of divine Love” is the terminus of a path described in the book. Such a soul is “scorched through mortification and burned through the ardor of the fire of charity, and her ashes are thrown into the open sea through the nothingness of will.”Such a soul no longer needs to seek God through penitence, through sacraments, through the church, or through the practice of virtues, for it has “dissolved in Him.” Unencumbered with self, Love “nourishes and sustains those who pledge faithful loyalty to her, for she is satisfying and deep and a richly flowing sea.” Such a soul does not feel joy because she is joy itself, flowing out of the Divinity. Novices, says Marguerite, “insist that God be subject to their sacraments and their works.” In contrast, she seeks union with the Divinity.That sounds fantastic to modern ears, but approached sympathetically, the book’s poetic spirituality will work its way into a reader’s soul, there to exercise its transforming power.

Yes, Marguerite Porete went before the inquisition -twice!- for writing and distributing this book, ultimately to be burned at the stake. Reading its contents helps to explain how she could stand before these men, defy them, and die, in spite of being given the choice to live (which would have been a total sell-out). Marguerite practiced what she preached, and very possibly terrified her inquisitors! By the time she stood in their midst, "she" was no longer there. What remained was totally unknowable to those who sat in judgement of "her"! THE MIRROR OF SIMPLE SOULS is a great start for anyone delving into mysticism...

The "Classics of Western Spirituality" is an exceptional series. I have about 10 of the volumes and have enjoyed the ones that I have read. CWS is a good source for Christian mystics' writings.The Mirror of Simple Souls comes with a very good introduction: a brief outline of the writing, a history of the author, her group, and the historical context. MP writes in a lyric prose style which I find enjoyable. The issue that Mystics face is trying to put into words what is ineffable/wordless. The lyrical prose helps transfer both the content and the experience/context/ambiance of MP's experiential faith.MP is not a saint of the Roman Catholic church but other saints do have similar beliefs and descriptions.

Unique amongst Christian mystical writings and I say that having read a lot of them. Cloud of unknowing to Theresa of Avilla. This book was condemned by the French Inquisition as being heretical. Just like Joan of Arc, Marguerite Porete was asked to recant. When she refused to respond to her inquisitors, she was condemned to death. On 1 June 1310 she was burned at the stake in Paris for her crime of direct knowing. She said things like ;"Thus it is better that the Soul be in the sweet country of understanding-nothing" ... (p. 142)"(God) is incomprehensible except by Himself". (p. 84)"I have only as much being as (God) is able to be of Himself in me". (pp. 174-175)Margerete Porrete is much more purely gnostic in her message which is why the Inquisition burned all of her writings. Strangely this one book survived to express in an exquisite simplicity the path to god through meditation and devotion. SHe does this brilliantly, explaining her teaching through writing a dialogue between intellectual reason (the churches way of understanding), love , and the soul. She sometimes divides the dialogue further between other parts, but the way she presents it is amazingly more lucid than many other christian mystics.THis book is for anyone who has a serious meditation practice and combines this with thier love of God. It is not an intellectual regurgitation of a young woman trying to be a spiritual writer. She is divinely inspired by her own gnosis of what is the truth and of what is love through entering the stillness and silence of the mind. She does this through deep surrender to Christ. This love seeks to motivate others to practice more than intellectual submission, this love pours a method out onto these pages, her method to go back into absorption with GOD. This same love eventually brought her to the same sacrifices as other teachers before her. I believe the Margerite Porette was simply trying to teach others in a simple way how to experience God directly through her method. And there is clearly a method in here for those that practice meditation (a method of concentration to silence the mind-surrender the self will). Thus the book is called the Mirror of simple souls.It is a shame that so may others who review this book reduce it to a piece of invented, intellectual literature, really throwing Marguerite's truth and method back into the ashes. A shame as she was burned for her faith in what she was writing, not for being a scholar.If you love the Philokalia, or Rumi or Meister Eckhart; or you just simply love GOD and wish to deepen your devotional meditation practice this book is for you.

A bewildering, magical book, that is definitely not for those new to mysticism—if I had read this book a few years ago, I would not have been ready for it, and even now I’m certain much of its riches lay undiscovered to my current spiritual level.A book that neatly removes any and all middlemen, it is unsurprising that the Church found her and her message to be such a threat to institutional religion.

One might even call this book a crib sheet for pre-game and half time pep talks, but Feinstein also does his usual excellent job of "getting to know" the players, coaches and personalities. You'll get to know them too in this inside the lockerroom, season-long report.Feinstein's style is very easy to read and this book would be interesting to people from a sociological perspective in addition to those who are basketball junkies like myself. Does the NCAA and its member institutions exploit athletes? Where did the fun go from the game--playing is a privilege and the competition in an of itself, along with a scholarship should be enough. Feinstein tackles these topics again in his more recent book The Last Amateurs.This is a very worthwhile read and more evenhanded and "fair" to the participants than A Season on the Brink. In fact Dean Smith would not let the author have the same access as every other coach b/c Feinstein is a Duke alum. And that is precisely why the Duke-UNC is one of the top 3 college sports rivalries.

I have read several books written by coach K and as I am a Duke fan and none of these books have come close to John Finesteins "A March to Madness". If you are a fan of any team in the Atlantic Coast Conference that was actively a member of the conference of from the late 70's thru the late 90's, this is the book for you. Finestein spends time with the all the coaches and teams in the Atlantic Coast Conference and really gives a birds eye view for all the teams, coaches, and players. There is something for every ACC fan in "A March to Madness." It is really funny and interesting and it takes me back to a great era in ACC basketball. Best ACC basketball book I have read to date.

I'm not a college hoops fan, but having come from the University of Connecticut (back when winning the NIT was a big deal for us), I figured I should try to read something about the sport that has come to define my alma mater.I chose well. No, UConn is not a part of the Atlantic Coast Conference, the subject of this season-long profile by John Feinstein. But Feinstein gives a solid appreciation for what college basketball is all about through the experiences of the coaches, players, refs, execs, and fans active in the ACC, which Feinstein claims is perhaps the most competitive b-ball conference in Division 1, year in and out. "Let down just the slightest bit and you become instant roadkill," he writes.Feinstein gives you a sense of the different coaching styles at play here, from Dean Smith's traditional approach at North Carolina to Rick Barnes' cut-up quirkiness at Clemson to Dave Odom's huggy-bear avuncularity at Wake Forest. He relates tales about the history and folklore of the conference that make one feel like an instant Dick Vitale just from reading them, even if the terms "traveling" and "charging" make you flash on American Express. Most importantly, he writes a book that really opens up the world of college basketball to the more casual fan, or even curious non-fan.That's what I liked the book. I read it, relished it, and enjoyed it with practically no knowledge of the sport going in. The way Feinstein writes about how different refs call different fouls, for example, was both illuminating and entertaining reading.Feinstein also writes candidly about contracts, recruiting, marriages (failed and successful), burnout, death, and all the other factors that affect college coaches. Players are less the focus, and I get the feeling that Feinstein speaks from personal experience late in the book when he speculates about how an inability to relate to his young players may have moved Dean Smith to retire at 66. The absence of a players' perspective is unfortunate, but it kind of follows with the focus of the book being on the nine coaches, seven of whom gave Feinstein total access.Feinstein obviously worked hard, and at times his narrative seems to be everywhere at once. Really great work on game descriptions, too, the way he uses them judiciously to punch up the storyline without letting them overtake the rest of the book.Finally, this is a must-read for fans of Duke and their coach, Mike Krzyzewski. Krzyzewski comes off the best in this book, and while some charge Duke grad Feinstein with bias, the truth is Krzyzewski has the most to offer, both as a man and as a coach. The story of his "drawing the line" before a big game with North Carolina is worth the price of the book by itself. Between him and Dean Smith, I'm surprised Feinstein had time at all for poor Pat Kennedy of Florida State, but he works hard at balance.What most comes across in this book is the amazing drive of the people involved. "If you're good enough to reach a goal, then there's still someplace else to go," says Maryland coach Gary Williams. "You don't just stop. You keep trying to be better."There are minor holes in "A March To Madness," but what makes it great is the fact its author shares Williams' passion for excellence. There's no let up.

I could not decide between Tim Richard's "Piano Blues" book and this one by Tricia Woods. I spent 3 months on the first chapter of Richards, and gave up. I think his approach is more comprehensive, and his appendix of different types of blues scales and LH patterns alone is worth the price of the entire book, but his examples were too complex for me...at my level of playing it required some work for me to play them with technical accuracy, and so did not encourage me to improvise over them. They may be perfect for me more advanced players, not not for me (and I've been playing for a few years).In contrast Wood's book hit the sweet spot for me. The examples are complex enough that they aren't too cliche, but are simple enough to encourage one to play around with them; transpose them, or just take off and freely improvise over their simple LH patterns. I found myself hungrily anticipating practicing with this book. Perhaps I'll return to Richard's after I finish this, but I'll certainly continue with the next in her series before I do.

Take this book seriously. 9 chapters: Music review, 12-bar blues, blues melodies, playing a shuffle, piano blues sounds, a look at boogie-woogie, rhythm-comping-paying-in-a-band, intros-endings-turnarounds, walking bass and intro to the slow blues. Every page or two there is a completely written-out blues song, left- and right-hand, written by the book author in a particular style. Clearly, if you practice each song to the point of competence, you will learn to play a lot of blues. There are also exercises described in words, e.g. "Play the blues above in the key of F instead of C -- Bending the 3 note will be trickier than it was in C." The accompanying CD has 95 cuts illustrating the blues songs and patterns written out in the book.There are also photos and thumbnail histories of famous blues artists.I'm a beginning piano player, so I'm not progressing very fast through the book, but the beginner songs sound good enough to keep me motivatedIf I look for something to complain about, it would be that the book does not contain a lot of riffs that might have caught your ear when listening to particular blues artists.

The Tricia Woods series for learning blues piano are the best ones out there in my opinion. The entire series presents a wealth of good information in a succinct,but easily readable style. She really put some thought into presenting the material into small, assimilable steps that enable the student to progress without hitting a brick wall. The hardest thing for many students is developing independence of the left and right hands. Her graded exercises reduce the frustration that usually occurs at this critical phase. What a shame that she passed away several years ago. I would have loved to have met her and personally thank her. One book does have a DVD that allows you to experience her teaching style and hear her play...

Great book. I found it ideal for my level, which is extensive background in a variety of instruments and blues, but only relatively short exposure to keyboards.Lots of theory; fingerings for all pieces are given, which is very helpful; unprinted exercises are given for you to work through : other keys, tempos, area to write your own fills using previous lessons, etc. The cd is very clear and greatly beneficial. Some of the pieces required good hand independence for the rhythms used.The greatest asset of the book is that the arrangements are fun to play. Something that is lacking in many such books. Keeps the motivation level high.

Very good blues piano book. I have several and this one is the best. It lays out basic blues piano concepts in digestable pieces with accompanying practice pieces and ties them into music theory concepts. Comes with CD. I have about 5 yrs of off/on piano instruction. I found the other blues piano books either too elementary or too challenging. Some only had exercises to do (like boogie woogie patterns) and were not tied to actual songs. This book hits a happy medium between elementary and too challenging, and utilizes exercises, with music theory explanations, and actual songs.

I received this book, and its beyond my comprehension that it was not check before shipment. on opening the book, the inside from pages 3 to the last page 95 is upside down and to read it i have to turn the whole book (the front cover) upside down, therefore all the pages starts from back to front in other words right to left, instead of what i would expect from a normal book. I would rather contact amazon customer service representative, however, could not find it on the amazon website as a means to do so.

As an adult who took years of piano lessons as a child and never really experienced the joy of playing music at that time, when I looked for a piano teacher recently, my number one instruction was that I did not want to be bound by classical music (as I had been years ago). My current teacher directed me towards this book and I have been having a blast learning the Blues and this particular book and CD combo is a perfect avenue for me to do so. Being able to hear the rhythm and timing of the pieces on the CD is a real asset. In addition, it has really been helping me renew my very rusty ability to read music. Its been so much fun, that I've been willing to work on some classical pieces at the same time.

Exactly what I needed! I've learned more blues in one month with this book than I did in several months of on-line tutorials. The author not only explains how to play a rhythm or baseline or lick, but what each is comprised of, so that you can transpose to other chords and keys. The included CD was a big help to me in getting the sound in my ear.

I ordered this but didn't down load it, so I haven't read it.

Sub par for a William W Johnstone western. Gives the appearance that it was written by 3 or 4 people each writing their own assigned part then stuck together to make a book. Fewer characters and free flowing from beginning to end is the way Mr Johnstone told a story. Get back to basics.

I like that this author seems to have put a lot of care and attention into this book and seems to be driven to really want to help people overcome blocks to wealth and happiness. Even though we all know that wealth and happiness don't have to be inextricably linked to each other, if you have a certain calling in life that requires you to have money, then lack of wealth can make you miserable and make you feel blocked in your purpose. For me, this is certainly true. I was so excited to get this book and follow the plan but it just didn't resonate with me. I felt as if this book was geared more toward people who already are pretty much on the right track to attaining wealth and purpose but have just run into some bumps in the road - granted that in the author's case, some of the bumps in the road were quite major and disheartening. I read her personal testimony and she overcame a lot. But what about the people who aren't even on the bumpy road to their purpose yet? Maybe they've been struggling for years to find their way. They haven't gotten as far as having a failed business that needed to be reevaluated and turned into something more purposeful. They haven't gotten as far as already having some useful connections that they can rely upon when they get ready to switch things up and take a different course of action. This is a program to help iron out the the kinks , not for people who have been stuck for years and years. The suggestion in this book to take a daily action step related to each of my personal sacred wealth archetypes seems like general guidance and too broad and sweeping for where I'm at right now. I did the other exercises but when I got to the parts that said to take an action step, I had no clue what I could do that I hadn't already done. I guess that is what disappointed me. I know the author didn't intend it this way but it felt like somebody telling you to pull yourself up by your bootstraps when you have no boots yet. I felt like I needed a program to help me find a way to get some boots first. Then, I could start taking steps in them.

"John C. Schubert was born in San Francisco and received a BA degree in anthropology at Sonoma State University. He has been known as the Russian River historian since 1960 and has written for several Guerneville newspapers. Hidden History of Sonoma County is a well-researched and well-written history of early Sonoma County, California. The detail is impressive and reflects the author’s passion for history. I was particularly pleased with Chapter 7, “Hanging at Gravel Slough.” I had known bits and pieces of the story of the lynching of Charles Hendley back in 1876, but John Schubert did an outstanding job of filling in all the details. Well done!

Cool book! Some interesting history of the county. Easy to read, language plain and straight forward.

Note: for transparency's sake, I am a liberal advocate for fighting climate change and promoting science. I am also a non-believer.)Until I read this book I thought that Evangelical Christians were almost universally opposed to science and believed that climate change was a liberal hoax. Caring for Creation has dramatically changed my mind.This is a book that everyone should read, regardless of their views on climate change, religion, politics, and science. Paul Douglas (my favorite meteorologist) and co-writer Mitch Hescox present a very persuasive argument why Evangelical Christians should take climate change seriously and act. Caring for Creation provides ample scientific evidence that climate change is real and now. It also provides unambiguous support for action using the Scriptures. In addition, Paul and Mitch layout solid conservative, free market, reasons why taking care of our environment and climate makes perfect sense monetarily. It also makes sense in promoting individual freedom and responsibility.Because the authors are Evangelical Christians they are able to speak directly to other evangelicals in words that resonate with their beliefs. For this reason alone Caring for Creation is a must read for liberals and folks of other beliefs. It is both factually accurate and provides insight into the minds of segment of American culture that many don't understand.For Evangelical Christians, Caring for Creation is a clarion call to action. How can we continue to desecrate God's creation? In doing so humanity dishonors God by being bad stewards of the riches that He has given us to look after.Lastly, being a liberal makes me sensitive to negative stereotypes and misinterpretations of what we stand for. There are a few comments in the book that I take exception with. Yet even here it is enlightening to see what misconceptions they have about liberals just as our misconceptions about them. Caring for Creation is about our God given responsibility to stop ignoring the data and science around climate change and protect the future of God’s people. The book is written by two Christian conservatives and offers a unique perspective on the issue. The authors place a high importance on caring for the unborn. They see that pollution and climate change disproportionately affect children, the poor and disabled—those who Jesus has called us to protect. Overall, I really enjoyed this book. It used a very nice blend of science, anecdotes, scripture, facts, evidence, and future predictions. The authors challenge us as individuals to be the seed for change as well as discuss solutions on a larger political scale. I would recommend it to any Christian republican who either dismisses climate change or is interested in being an advocate for change and potential solutions.

Paul Douglas and Mitch Hescox provides a suprising and informative perspective on climate change. The duo a conservative Christian and a metrologist discuss the importance and interconnections of climate systems and their consequences. Caring for creation encompasses advocacy for land health and human health. While the authors explain the cause for care from a faith standpoint effectively, I believe the same faith views and strong conservative values, gloss over and minimize other important issues of concern. However they do a great job discussing the leaching aspects of fossil fuels on government subsides and providing graphs and figures to support it. They made a compelling case for renewable energy, specifically solar power. I suggest this book for people on both sides of the aisle, politically and religiously. They provide thoughtful insight on climate change from an often unasked voice.

An encouraging discussion of how we are impacting climate and how we can control the outcome. This is like the pioneers needed to learn to grow corn to have something to eat. Chang is sometimes a requirement. The book tells the story of climate without bias and in very convincing terms.

Paul Douglas is a well respected meteorologist in the Twin Cities so I was very interested in this book. He mentioned "scientific literacy" on TV Program here and explains the climate issue from a scientific perspective. The other author is a minister and encourages citizens to protect our environment. It's a well written, interesting and informative book

The authors made a strong point that as a Christian I have not only a responsibility but an obligation to care for God's creation in all its forms. Not only human life but the environment that supports all of life. "This is my Father's World." As a result, I'm renewing my commitment to a greener, more sustainable life style and especially when it comes to single use plastics.

A great read and a very powerful read. Mitch and Paul do a great job of speaking the language of those uncertain or skeptical of the science of climate change. Paul uses his experience as a longtime meteorologist and entrepreneur to explain the science and uses data to show that the fallacies/misconceptions, that some people cling to, are false. Pastor Mitch quotes scripture and speaks to how the bible tells us that the Earth does not belong to us and that we have a moral responsibility to educate ourselves and take action.This would be a great gift to give those unconvinced, sitting on the fence and those who deny climate change. It would be a great book to buy for your church or to use to start a book club within your church or community. I highly recommend this book!

Great book! Eminently readable and disarmingly personable in its tone. Makes rock solid arguments based on Scripture and scientific fact. I plan to use this as a principal source in my ongoing conversations with fellow Evangelicals on the subject of climate change.
