Review

"Lately [Chairman of the Joint Chiefs General] Shelton has been closely reading a book called Dereliction of Duty. Its thesis: that the Joint Chiefs of Staff lost the Vietnam War by failing to stand up to civilian leadership."-- "Newsweek"Four star generals do not normally consult the writings of junior field grade officers for advice about career decisions. But it was widely reported that when Air Force Chief of Staff General Ronald Fogelman decided to resign in 1997, he did so at least in part on the basis of a careful reading of H.R. McMaster's "Dereliction of Duty...."McMaster has written a scathing indictment of America's civilian and military leadership during the early phases of the Vietnam war, and he speaks...with unique moral authority....McMaster earned his moral authority under fire....By virtue of his actions [in the Gulf War], McMaster became a hero.... "[McMaster] speaks with unusual authority as a symbol of the confident young veterans of the Gulf. His call to his leaders to hold themselves to high standards of professional integrity is, therefore, an important one. No wonder, then, that General Fogelman, himself an acute student of history, would pay close attention to work that on nearly every page excoriates his predecessors for their unwillingness to speak and act as their positions required.... "Recently, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Henry Shelton, invited Major McMaster to lecture to the most senior generals in the American military about his book." -- Eliot Cohen, Professor of StrategicStudies of The Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies, "National Interest Magazine, Spring '98"A stunning book: eloquent and highly effective. The word noble would not be going too far." -- Paul Fussell, author of "The Great War & Modern Memory"What gives "Dereliction of Duty its special value is...McMaster's comprehensive, balanced and relentless exploration of the specific role of the Joint Chiefs of Staff...a devastating indictment of Johnson and his principal civilian and military advisers." -- Ronald Spector, "New York Times Book Review"Well-written and full of enlightening new details, "Dereliction of Duty adds significantly to the historical record of a great national failure." -- Arnold R. Isaacs, "Washington Post Book World"Carefully researched and vividly narrated, H.R. McMaster's book adds a new and disturbing dimension to an understanding of the decisions that propelled us into the Vietnam war. It should be read by anyone interested in the origins of one of the great tragedies in American history."-- Stanley Karnow, Pulitzer Prize-Winning author of "Vietnam: A History "A book to boggle your mind with new revelations of ineptness, duplicity, and arrogance amongst the senior-most officials of theUnited States....McMaster pastes all the puzzle pieces together to reveal a plot Shakespearean in its proportions ...McMaster's scholarship and presentation is exemplary in "Dereliction of Duty...The author's arguments are coherent and convincing and important to the historical record."-- Peter Arnett, "The Washington Monthly"An outstanding example of historical research, interpretation, scholarship, and fair-minded analysis."-- Donald Kagan, Bass Professor of History, Classics, and Western Civilization, Yale University, and author of "On the Origins of War"Superbly researched, play-by-play, riveting inside story of the genesis of the American War in Vietnam. Assorted firepower explodes on every page."-- Lt. Gen. Harold G. Moore. United States Army, (Retired), " New York Times bestselling coauthor of "We Were Soldiers Once...and Young"Here's everything you didn't read in Robert S. McNamara's book. Vietnam did not simply happen; it was not an accidental Cold War collision that killed 58,000 Americans and a million Vietnamese. Men of power and responsibility caused that disastrous war and left their fingerprints all over it'and here are their names and what they did and said and decided in secret. McMaster has mined newly declassified records and, in these pages, sheds fresh light and understanding on how the best and the brightest, shielded by a bodyguard of lies and the words top secret, maneuvered and manipulated our country down the road to war and bitter defeat."-- Joseph L. Galloway, senior writer, "U.S. News & World Report, and "New York Times bestselling coauthor of "We Were Soldiers Once...And Young"An impressive study thorough in its research and summary in its judgments. [McMaster] doesn't shy from bold interpretation, or the damning insight, and his analysis, a model of clarity and economy, puts civil-military relations during the Vietnam war in an eerie, indeed Byzantine light."-- Robert Anderson, "The Philadelphia Inquirer"A tough, straightforward and hard hitting account of early decisions that set the course for the U.S. war in Vietnam. H.R. McMaster's book is vital in understanding those times and those critical decisions." -- General Frederick Franks, United States Army, (Retired), "New York Times bestselling coauthor of "Into The Storm"Most explosive.[a] devastating reassessment of the historical records..Major McMaster.deserves praise for his original research and riveting account. After "Dereliction of Duty, the Vietnam War will never look quite the same. It is indeed a seminal work." -- Mackubin Thomas Owens, "Washington Times"A fabulous piece of scholarship. This book will open a whole new chapter in our study of Vietnam."-- Tom Clancy"Thoroughly researched, clearly written and forcefully argued." -- Brian VanDeMark, "Los Angeles Times Book Review, author of "Into the Quagmire"H.R. McMaster's new "Dereliction of Duty stands out as a particularly well-documented, searing indictment of the civilian and military leadership. This is the clearest and most cogent argument as to the basic causes of the disaster."-- Edward M. Coffman, author of "The War To End All Wars and "The Old Army"Brilliant...a penetrating analysis." -- "San Francisco Chronicle"Invaluable...a most readable, yet meticulously documented history." - Colonel Harry G. Summers, Jr., United States Army (Retired), author of "On Strategy: A Critical Analysis of the Vietnam War, and editor of " Vietnam magazine"McMaster's book has drawn high praise from experts..His dogged research unearthed thousands of pages of material denied other historians and writers." -- Ed Offley, "Seattle Post Intelligencer"A chilling indictment.. There have been many books on the Vietnam War, but none that examines so closely and intensively how Lyndon Johnson, Robert McNamara, and Maxwell Taylorsystematically conspired to prevent the Joint Chiefs of Staff from performing their duty." -- Michael Barone, author of "Our Country: The Shaping of America from Roosevelt to Reagan."Red hot, brilliantly shows how the American people were conned." -- Colonel David H. From the Back Cover

"The war in Vietnam was not lost in the field, nor was it lost on the front pages of the New York Times or the college campuses. It was lost in Washington, D.C." - H. R. McMaster (from the Conclusion) Dereliction Of Duty is a stunning new analysis of how and why the United States became involved in an all-out and disastrous war in Southeast Asia. Fully and convincingly researched, based on recently released transcripts and personal accounts of crucial meetings, confrontations and decisions, it is the only book that fully re-creates what happened and why. It also pinpoints the policies and decisions that got the United States into the morass and reveals who made these decisions and the motives behind them, disproving the published theories of other historians and excuses of the participants. Dereliction Of Duty covers the story in strong narrative fashion, focusing on a fascinating cast of characters: President Lyndon Johnson, Robert McNamara, General Maxwell Taylor, McGeorge Bundy and other top aides who deliberately deceived the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the U.S. Congress and the American public. Sure to generate controversy, Dereliction Of Duty is an explosive and authoritative new look at the controversy concerning the United States involvement in Vietnam.

For those of age during the Vietnam war, there is no doubt that objectivity is difficult as to why America got involved and eventually pulled out. The view of those who fought the war is usually quite different from those who instigated it and were responsible for its disastrous outcome. It takes courage to go into battle and fight for a cause that through the detestable bureaucratic legislation called the draft one is forced to fight for. It takes just as much courage to voluntarily fight in a war that has been marketed as being necessary, unavoidable, and winnable. This book gives further evidence that the disaster of the Vietnam war was not the result of those who fought it, but rather with the DC clowns who feigned competence in military matters and those who remained silent or acquiesced in the horrible circus of political maneuvering. There are some who may hold to the premise that Lyndon Johnson and his closest advisors showed real guts in attempting to fight against the Vietnamese Communist threat and to “save American face”. But it does not take any intestinal fortitude or keen intellect to indulge in the deceit and verbal machinations that are delineated in meticulous detail in this book. For those readers who want the raw, naked truth about Vietnam, this book is highly recommended, and its study will reveal that the author has definitely done his homework.Having its origin in the National Security Act of 1947, the Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) during the Vietnam war is portrayed in this book as more of a collection of “technicians for planners” than a body of individuals who carefully thought out strategies and tactics. Some readers may be shocked as to what little influence the JCS had on actual policy decisions during the buildup of the war and its actual execution in the years that followed. One can only wonder whether this was the result of tacit agreement with those policies or rather from an excess of veneration for the Presidency and his cabinet officers. The author seems to argue for a superposition of both of these, and frequently the JCS is accused of placating the president.Robert McNamara is rightfully portrayed as an evil demon in this book, as a government bureaucrat who cannot engage in self-criticism and smug in the certainty of his analysis and assessments of progress in the war. McNamara’s dwelling at the time was definitely a cesspool of apodictic certainty as is well brought out in this book, especially in the manner in which he interacted with the president and the JCS.Johnson failed along with his vision of the Great Society. The JCS failed. Robert McNamara and Cyrus Vance failed. The only success of that time was the drive to end the debacle of the Vietnam war. This book is a microscopic view of these failures, and the biggest lesson to take away from the study of this book is an appreciation of just how removed from reality a government bureaucracy can be, and how uncritical adulation for a president or an idea can result in horrible destruction and heartache.

Outstanding book. I served in Vietnam and thought I knew a lot about the politics of the war. After reading this book I now have a much better understanding. No blood and guts or description of the battles. Just the politics.

The makings of the Vietnam War upon serious study and retrospect will make one want to scream. How our White House under the leadership of Lyndon Baines Johnson gradually and without the advice of the Joint Chiefs of Staff got involved in a land war in Vietnam. In a period of two years of constant arguing and intrigue the United States found itself hopelessly entangled in a war. Much of the military leaders advised against getting involved in the war. The only White House official who argued against military involvement was George Ball who did not bring his dissent outside the walls of the White House. H.R. McMaster brings forth the wrong thinking and mistake prone analysis of President Johnson and Robert McNamara who stumbled their way in making a full military commitment. In doing so in a stealthy way and lying to the American public they found themselves fully immersed in a political civil war in which we could not win.

This is more than a "good" book, this is one of the must have books on the Vietnam war. McMaster's meticulous exposure of the individual actors decision making and forced consensus illuminates the slide into a war that had no victory or exit grand strategy. Crippled by political competition, interservice rivalry, ignored legal duties, habitual lies, toadyism, and an insecure and politically obsessed President created the "perfect storm" for a disaster. What makes this book so valuable is its illumination of how government processes, flawed assumptions, and self-interested actors can create a and organizational dynamic that insures failure. No single actor had an understanding of the enemy, or of how to break the will of an enemy whose will was nearly unbreakable. And the decision makers were unwilling to face the reality that the only alternative to belligerents who won't surrender, as in WWII and the war in Europe, is to utterly destroy and occupy the country of the enemy - an option they would not (for logical reasons) pursue. So the participants became obsessed with compromise, and doing "just enough" to "communicate" their seriousness to the enemy - an enemy that had already concluded that the US did not have the will or seriousness to carry on an indefinite and never ending war of attrition. Moreover, any attempt by skeptical generals to recommend to the President the use maximum force (or withdrawal) was sidelined, rejected, or water-down.Another reviewer suggested that the author's conclusion was that the General's knew how to win the war, but the reviewer misread the book's message. McMaster's criticisms are leveled at everyone involved, including the JCS. In particular, the JCS's unwillingness to strongly buck McNamara's and Taylor's forced "consensus", and be candid with Congress, may have facilitated the unfolding disaster. It is clear they did not have the full answer, but some knew that it would AT LEAST require a five year war with 500k to 700K troops - a viewpoint that was discounted or buried by the civilian "experts".Could the the war have been won? Perhaps. Harry G. Summers book "On Strategy" makes a good case for his alternatives. In the end South Vietnam fell NOT because of the "venality" of the South Vietnamese government nor the sympathies for the North Vietnamese but for conventional reasons - they were defeated in the conventional war by better forces, who were better supplied. If this book is suggestive of how McMaster's understands 'the right thing to do' as the NSC advisor and will stand up to his CinC and Bannon, he was an excellent choice to replace Flynn. We shall see.

Bruce Arians deserved a better writer than Lars Anderson to discuss what it takes to be an NFL quarterback. The book is a mess in a lot of ways with side trips in the middle of chapters that don’t necessarily related to the topic at hand. There is a good book in here somewhere. With that said, Arians has a lot of important points to make about what it takes to be an NFL quarterback. Here he profiles those he has worked with most closely: Peyton Manning, Kelly Holcomb, Ben Roethlisberger, Andrew Luck, and Carson Palmer. All are very different quarterbacks but with a lot of the traits Arians looks for in an NFL signal caller. Unfortunately, a lot of the chapters start meandering into other topics, but nonetheless they are great vignettes about some of the best quarterbacks in the league and one primarily a backup quarterback (Holcomb) who Arians got the most out of.What is the most important attribute for an NFL quarterback? First, it’s brains. To be successful in the NFL a quarterback doesn’t have to be the best athlete on the field, but he probably has to be one of the smartest. The ability to watch film, read defenses in fast paced live action, and get the ball where it needs to be with accuracy and velocity ultimately is the key. But football smarts is essential to success regardless of other factors. You also must have heart. The willingness to take a big hit to get the ball off, the willingness to play through pain, and the willingness to prepare hard and do what it takes to maximize potential. You have grit, which Arians defines as “handling success and failure equally”. You can’t get too up and down over wins and losses but have to compartmentalize and move on to the next game. If a QB throws an interception or a pick six (an interception returned for a touchdown), the QB can’t get rattled but has to move on to the next play. And you have to be leader. An NFL quarterback must be somebody others on the team look up to as an example and want to play with. And all the traits above set that example. From athletic point of view obviously an NFL quarterback has to have decent arm strength but it doesn’t have to be a rocket. Accurate throws to all parts of the field are what set quarterbacks apart. And the quarterback has to be athletic enough to avoid rush and move around in the pocket, what many call “pocket presence”. You don’t have to be the best athlete just athletic enough. As Arians notes, a lot of big armed, athletic quarterbacks have failed in the NFL because they did not posses these traits. The other interesting part of this book is how some potentially great quarterbacks lack the maturity to play quarterback in the NFL. Arians was with Baltimore when they scouted Ryan Leaf and Peyton Manning as their first NFL draft pick. Arians walked around both players’ campuses incognito and just asked around about what people thought of them. Everybody had good things to say about Manning and nothing bad, while nobody had anything but bad things to say about Leaf. So that ingrained in Arians a clear lack of leadership and we see what happened to Ryan Leaf.Overall this was an interesting book about NFL quarterbacks, just annoying disjointed and unorganized at times.

Bruce Arians has worked with several of the best quarterbacks in the game. This book is a fascinating look at the early days of quarterbacks such as Andrew Luck, Peyton Manning, Ben Rothlisberger, and Carson Palmer. Being an Arizona Cardinals fan helps, but Arians has had an unusual journey to his current head coach job and I think any football fan would enjoy reading this book. I highly recommend it.

I totally enjoyed this book. BA gave me a rare insight into working with some of the greatest qb's ever in the history of the NFL. It's easy to see why he has such a great reputation with his players. He shares why he treats all around him like family. What a rare and totally refreshing thing to read in this jealous and dog eat dog world. I'll bet you'll have as much fun as I did reading it.

This is an interesting and fun read. Bruce and his wife Chris both enter into the conversation with their comments along with those of the several NFL quarterbacks that Arians has coached over the years.

For long suffering Cardinals fans Bruce Arians has been a godsend as a coach. He has built a perennial winner in Arizona and entirely re shaped the team culture. This book provides excellent insight into his coaching and lifestyle philosophy.

What a great story. BA hits a home run with his down to earth approach to coaching and his forthright attitude on life. There are lessons here that everyone will enjoy. Being an Arizona Cardinals season ticket holder makes this story even sweeter. Loved the book!

I love Bruce's candidness. The book is a fun and easy read. You don't have to be a football coach to enjoy this book.

Although I'm female, I enjoyed reading about this phenomenal coach and his methods for recognizing quarterback potential and then developing it. My husband is reading it now.

These books are darling! The truck bookcase is really cute too. My autistic 3 year old (now a 4 year old) still loves these books, especially the train, tractor and car ones. I only deducted one star because for the age audience these appeal to, they should probably not have paper pages. I have had to do a lot of repair on his favorite ones. Otherwise the stories themselves and pictures are really great. Each pages rhymes. This is a great concept for a set of books as it seems most little boys at least love all things vehicles. Highly recommend this set. It would make a great gift!

I ordered this set after reading Amazing Airplanes elsewhere and my 2yo really enjoying it. The stories are absolutely wonderful--very educational (I learned so much about tractors that I never knew!) and with a nice cadence (the lines rhyme). They are small books, and I've taken a picture of one next to the regular-sized version and a dollar bill for comparison. But the size doesn't bother my toddler. Easier to throw in a diaper bag! And you can't beat the price. They are a huge hit at my house.

It's just a little flimsy for my liking: this set won't survive very long in the hands of a toddler. The storage box is only somewhat stable when all 10 books are in, otherwise it tips over. Also my toddler gets frustrated trying to put the books in: they have to be placed rather carefuly. My biggest compain though.... Yes the pictures are colorfull and cute but i can't figure out what animals are shown in those pictures! When i start saying: this and this are flying on the airplane, i have no idea who "this" is! Also, i couldn't find which books were included before i bought this set. I was disappointed not to find helicopters and motocycles; i had to order those separately. Overall kids seem to like them a lot but mom wishes for more realistic pictures.

I wasn’t sure what to expect when I bought these. I completely relied on the other positive reviews, assuming I wouldn’t be led astray ... and I wasn’t! My 2 year old son absolutely loves these books! They have a nice flow to them when you read them out loud and are educational, too. I’m really glad I invested in this set.

OMG my boys love this collection. The books are simple, well illustrated and great for all kids at story time. I have read each book in the collection at least a few times and I actually enjoy them as well. So if you have a kid in your life that likes boats, cars, trucks, rockets, submarines, etc., get this collection and have some fun reading to them. The one very minor piece of feedback I have is, the final page where it has the parts of each boat, car, fire truck, whatever, each main item should be its own page. While there is great information in there, the type and picture are too small. That is the page my boys ignore completely. Somehow they just skip over it. It is not enough to take a star off, but if the authors make more, and I hope they do, I hope my feedback is listened to.

These children's books are worth every penny that you spend on them. They are colorful, fun, and educational. My 4 yo and 7 yo love them. The 4 yo received them for Christmas and for the following 3 months they would alternate picking out their bedtime story from this assortment. They did not tire of them, and surprisingly, neither did I! The vocabulary lesson that is included is great, and the flow of the story is delightful. I would highly recommend these books as a gift or as a 'just because'... they are very special.

One of my daughters favorite books it the roaring rockets book. One night we were looking at the other books on the back cover and I decided to surprise her with this set. She loves reading about the other trucks, cars etc. She likes to talk about all the machine parts listed in teh back of the book. My only complaint with these books is the size. They are probably a perfect size for a kid to read but they are a little small for an adult to read the their kid when putting them to bed. As another review states... all the books do sound the same but I think that is the fun in it. Cute books in a cute stand.

These books are fantastic. We bought them for our 2 (now 3) year old last Christmas, and a year later they are still in great shape and some of his favorite books. They are very well written and engaging. My one year old will even sit and listen to a whole book. My three year old now loves to tell everyone about the different vehicles and their parts.I enjoy these so much that we may buy a second set as a backup in case the first set ever need to be replaced. Well worth the price.

We had the paperback version of one of these books, but the pages were too large for our two-year-old and the pages tend to rip.The books in this set, however, are just right for our kiddo! He loves to grab on and "read" it to himself. The pages are not in danger of ripping. The books are awesome. They help explain logistics and even physics behind various vehicles.Definitely recommend!

a gift for my wife. she loves it. She has a number of books about baseball, & this is not the normal "players" viewpoint, but something new, just as informative. A different perspective, well received.

Good pictures. Interesting stories, but some of the text leaves a little to be desired..

The book does have a lot of nice photos but the writing / editing is weak. Often the descriptions of those pictures leave you yearning for the who, what, when and where that would ideally accompany the photos. Redundancies such as "renamed Roy Green Field to honor Roy E. Green" and "convinced the Los Angeles Dodgers to bring their AAA club Omaha Dodgers to come to town." would lead to one believe that the only editing was spellcheck. Baseball has a rich history in prose that is lost in this book.

I bought this book for my Dad for Christmas and he loved it. We sat around flipping through and talking about the various parks, and he started telling me stories about ballplayers and games he had seen in some of them. It's filled with beautiful photographs. I would definitely recommend it to any baseball fan.

The book on lost baseball parks is most interesting, never knew that most of these ballparks even existed and the knowledgeable history of each ballpark makes me realize the amazing historical value of baseball to America and the fans who came to these ballparks to watch a baseball game. I would have given 5 stars but who ever shipped my book at amazon, did not inspected for page creases and the first three pages had creases but truly not a big deal, however, I felt it should be mentioned. I do highly recommend this book Lost Ballparks to anyone who is a true baseball fan.

Interesting book, full of history of the unknown baseball parks of yesteryear.

Christmas present for my husband. He loved it!

Amazing and nostalgic view of past ball-parks.

This is a great book if you already have an extensive working knowledge of the Teutonic Crusades, but if you're a novice and looking for education you may need to start off with another history before this.

The Teutonic Knights (AKA Knights of the Cross) were a fighting religious order established in the late eleventh century to fight the Saracens in the Holy Land in a conitnuing spirit and letter of the crusades. Based on the mounted nobility of the German-speaking areas of Europe, they quickly rose in power, affluence, and influence. Once the prospect of reconquering the Holy Land practically disappeared, they switched their crusader activities to the "pagans" of the native eastern and northern Europe. Having established themselves militarily and politically in Livonia and in Prussia, their politics very quickly turned them against whom they perceived as a current enemies, be it pagan or Christian (e.g. the Poles). Having been a child in Poland and fed the traditional hatred of (and eventually triumph over) the Order of the Cross, it was attractive to get an independent, tradition-free expertise on the subject. Indeed, raised on Matejko's epic paintings and Sienkiewicz's epic literature, all one could conclude was that the chivalrous and patriotic Poles and Lithuanians triumphed at Grunwald (1410) over the cruel usurpers bearing the black crosses on their white mantles. Mr. Urban sets out to paint a different picture, trying more than once to show the Teutonic Knights as a complex product of religious convictions, austere monkish deprivation of lay pleasures, and stalwart defenders of the Catholic Christendom. If they were cruel and overbearing, so were all others during these bloody centuries of religious and lay strife for the lands, the souls, and the taxes of the native peoples. Frankly, I was not totally convinced. The crusading spirit never appealed to my ideas of fame and honor and seeing Tatars, Turks, and Eastern-European pagans as similarly faulted does little to make the Teutonic Kinights lovable. In the end, they hardly contributed to anything positive in Europe's history - be it in culture, literature, music, or philosophy. As a book, this one does not charm the reader. The author deserves credit for trying to relate the events and the personae involved, but the fragmented character of the political and religious changes make for a boring continuum of names, places, skirmishes, sieges - hardly a material for excitement-charged romance. The only really well covered event is the order's memorable defeat at Grunwald (Tannenberg). When push comes to shove, this history of the Order of the Cross offers little to the lay amateur of historical novels, while as a historical document it seems too popular in character.

It is not much of a stretch to claim that there are very few people alive today that know anything about the history of the Teutonic Knights and their Order State that lasted some three centuries in a fringe area of Baltic Europe. Few books are available in English that attempt to expound. It is a difficult story to tell due to the remoteness of time and place as well as the anachronistic nature of the order that evolved from an Outremer hospital for Germans to a crusading order against the very last pagans of Europe to a theocratic state at odds with its Christian neighbors and eventually with its own "citizens". The order itself was eventually divided into a German, Prussian, and Livonian order under a single Grand Master and were subservient to both Pope and Emperor.Urban concentrates on the highlights of the story and does a good job moving things along without getting too bogged down in details, though there are quite a few memorable anectodes (such as the Samogitians killing their own wives and children rather than surrender). The famous Battle of Grunwald (Tannenberg) is especially good here with lots of discussion and also enjoyed the narrivatives surrounding the end of the Prussian and Livonian orders. Also interesting was the especially brutal back and forth over Samogitia, the most resilient of the Baltic Pagans. However, at times the book does get muddled, particularly during the Prussian crusades, with a lot of name dropping, and there is a a vagueness to some of the chronology. A good summary or outline of events would have been helpful here. I did not get a good sense of what the heck was happening during the Thirteen Years War, for instance.Nevertheless, this book is recommended as a comprehensive overview of the history of this very fascinating period and group of warrior monks. We also get to see what it was like for the Pagan Last Stand in Europe, with Lithuania as the last holdout.

This was a good description of a portion of history in northern Europe I didn't know. However, the author assumed a level of knowledge of the reader that wasn't there. Names, places and events were mentioned as if I knew all about them. Therefore, I couldn't always follow the story leaving me a confused. And several times I found myself in a new place with no apparent tie to the previous, wondering what the new section had to do with the last one. Overall, I understood the general history, but lost some of the story along the way.

Very informative and has many intriguing surprises for the reader, especially for Lithuanians brought up to believe that the Teutonic Knights were bad and Lithuanians as victims and heroes. This history opens the mind for more study of this complex and less well known period in Europe's history. Curious that no Lithuanan historians are referenced (Gudavičius or Bumblauskas). Hard to believe he missed them by not knowing of them.

I found the book fascinating. My family is of English, Swedish and German extraction, but they lived in Estonia until the Hitler-Stalin pact forced them to leave. I had no trouble identifying locations in the Baltic, which most people have never heard of. The same is true of Prussia and Poland (where I was born). Having heard a lot about the Teutonic Knights when I was growing up, it was good to learn much more about their history.

Not a period or order I knew much about before reading. The book is enlightening on this military order and its contemporaries and is even exhausting at times in its detail. Very well researched and written, could recommend for casual readers and students.

Can be hard to follow if you are not that knowledgeable about Medieval History.
