If you are a new coffee fanatic, and are in to roasting your own coffee and wanting to learn all you can about coffee, go ahead and purchase this book, Pendergrast does a pretty good job of covering the coffee world from harvest to cup, and it is in an easy to read format. But I must say, I felt it was basically a "Cliff Note" of the all encompassing "Coffee Bible" that William H. Uker wrote almost a hundred years ago. Ukers book is titled "All About Coffee", and is the acknowledged complete work of every aspect of the coffee world. You can sometimes find the out of print book on Ebay, but it is usually over $150 for a worn out copy! I found that you can go to "Project Gutenberg" on the web and read the entire book, with all the full color hand drawn pictures, absolutely free of charge! Do it! You won't regret it!

I bought this book for my own information -- I've been a black coffee drinker for c. 60 years, and a real coffee aficionado for the past 15 years or so. The book's size and amount of information are almost overwhelming, and yet the author's clear, reader-friendly, nearly conversational writing style make it as much a "page-turner" as a good mystery novel. He covers the history, geography, economics, and complex sociology & politics of all aspects of this world-wide industry so completely as to make this work a textbook, nay, a one-volume college course. From Asia, Africa, and the Americas, to Starbuck's, Folgers, Maxwell House and everything in the U.S., it's all here. HIGHLY recommended!!

Probably the best historical book written about coffee as the author somehow made a factual compilation an easy read. The first half of the book was particularly entertaining. This book remains in my small library and I have used it as a reference several times. I have also purchased a few copies as gifts for friends.

Wow! This book really delves into behind the scene dealings of coffee companies extending into the darker aspects of government interventions in the exploitation of foreign nations' resources. Loaded with fun facts and pertinent information. I bought it for my dad for Christmas. He's a coffee lunatic and collects Chase & Sanborn vintage coffee tins.

It got more into the corporate battles than was my interest, but some folks may enjoy that. The history of coffee is a fascinating subject, for me.

I was wandering in Ethiopia when the curiosity about coffee was borned. I am a Brazilian but never looked deep into the story and history of coffee. This book is a piece of beauty as gives a tremendous parallel in between thes tory and the history of the world since coffee invention.

A well-written and informative book overall. Though I must echo the comments of other readers that state that it focuses more on the Americas. Having said that, it would have had to be a very long book to cover the world history of coffee. The book had some great parts which were very interesting (for example how America became addicted to drinking stale, packaged coffee in the 20th century) and parts that were less riveting (the incessant ups and downs of global coffee prices). Overall, I don't regret the purchase at all, it was a good read that left me with a much better understanding of coffee.

However, Ferguson seems to write from an almost completely unbiased perspective– at least as close as you can get to unbiased. The extent of Ferguson's research is truly astonishing. He covers the areas of pre-Christian baptisms, church history, biblical references to baptism, etc.Anyone interested theology in general and baptism in particular will benefit from this book.

First, as a Kindle owner, this book has an active table of contents, illustrations (at the end of chapter 3), is fully indexed, and uses greek characters throughout.As far as the content is concerned, it includes everything you ever wanted to know about baptism. Baptism is not only compared from its use in the East and the West but is also compared and contrasted to Jewish washings and even washings in other ancient religions. Issues include full immersion vs partial immersion or sprinkling, infant vs adult immersions, deathbed baptisms, the issue over who should administer the bpatism, male vs female baptism (with the issue of nudity being the prime motive here), as well as debate on rebaptism (especially if a Chrisitan came from a heretical form of Christianity). Not only the writings are looked at but also Christian art, archaological findings of baptismal fonts, and even inscriptions on tombs and burial places. Even an indepth word study is supplied showing how the word Baptizmo is used throughout many Greek sources (both Christian and secular). I sincerely doubt that a person could find another book that has as much detail.

The book deals primarily with with the literary sources, though it also gives attention to depictions of baptism, (primarily of Jesus)in various art forms and to the surviving baptismal fonts. Ferguson's thorough study points to the central importance of baptism in the early church. Many blessings were attributed to baptism, but the two earliest and most consistently mentioned are forgiveness of sins and the reception of the Holy Spirit; faith and repentance were necessary in order to receive these benefits. ... full immersion was the normal practice, and the evidence from art is consistent with this interpretation."This work is massive and detailed and divided into seven parts:Antecedents to Christian baptismBaptism in the New TestamentBaptism in the second centuryBaptism in the third century up until Nicea (325 A.D.)The fourth centuryThe fifth centuryBaptisteriesFerguson's discussion of Gregory of Nazianzus's famous Orations on baptism circa A.D. 380 support the conclusions of the jacket cover: baptism was often delayed until adolescence or adulthood or later. Gregory urges congregants not to put off baptism and most typically refers to it as "regeneration." The penultimate chapter discusses Augustine of Hippo's baptismal practices and theology. Augustine himself presided as bishop of Hippo in the Basilica of Peace between 411 and 430 A.D. Archaeological finds uncovered the basilica's baptistery revealing a baptismal pool some three feet deep and somewhat broader and wider. The process whereby the catechumens at Hippo were to be baptized on Easter are elaborately detailed by Ferguson based on Augustine's own writings. One question is whether or not the catechumens at Hippo were fully immersed. Augustine does not say in his many comments about the baptismal procedure at Hippo, but Ferguson contends Augustine had full immersion in mind. (Some think the baptismal pool not deep enough for full immersion while others contend Augustine had the catechumens wade into the pool to show humility and then kneel for baptism.) Ferguson argues that by "baptismus/baptizare" Augustine referred to the inner purification by Christ whereas "tinctio/intinguere" referred to the physical act of baptism itself. Augustine even uses the word "submersio" and so presumably practiced full immersion according to Ferguson. Important to note that Augustine did consider catechumens to be Christians before baptism, though they were not full members of the Church Catholic. Infant baptism, although not yet the norm in Christian North Africa, was common enough, especially for emergency baptisms. There are hardly any references to the baptism of healthy infants. The ritual for infants was basically the same as for adults. The infants were exorcized, validating Augustine's view of infants being stained with original sin. Adults would then speak the renunciation [of satan] and the profession of faith. "What infants were not yet able to do through their own faith was done for them by those who love them." Augustine resorted to the faith of others to justify the baptism of infants. In "On the Literal Interpretation of Genesis" Augustine states that baptism absolves infants from the punishment of original sin, "so it is right and proper to baptize them." Infants were then immersed in the same way as adults and then received an anointing(chrismation)and a laying on of hands (consignation). Afterwards they participated in the baptismal eucharist, receiving both the bread and the wine. Sermon 174 states "infants are members of Christ and receive the sacraments, including sharing in His table." And so, with Gregory in the East and Augustine in the West - during the Pelagian controversy - infant baptism became the norm for the early church some time in the fifth century.An extremely detailed an invaluable resource, though clearly not without biases given that many would argue infant baptism was normative at a much earlier time in the Church's history. Biases notwithstanding Ferguson's assertions are well documented and he is conversant with the secondary literature.

This is a powerful analysis of the relevant texts concerning baptism in the New Testament period by a seasoned scholar (Harvard Ph.D.), but much more. He places baptism in its historical context through the ages. If the book only contained the historical survey of how baptism has functioned, it would be worth the price!

A very thorough treatment of the both the Scriptural references to baptism and a discussion of the influences of early church leaders and writers. Well done.

Outstanding

A quick note about the Kindle edition. It does not contain the pictures which are referenced in the text. This is very unfortunate for a book whose thesis is dependent on more than just textual evidence. In addition there are foot notes referenced in the text that are not linked to the footnotes at the end. Most of these appear to be references to Scripture, which shouldn't be too difficult to look up. I will need to purchase a hard copy for the pictures.

These impossible standards are secret rules or limiting beliefs we all abide by that direct our work and make it more difficult to complete the tasks we’ve committed to. A common secret rule is that only miserable, difficult goals count says Acuff like running to lose weight because that sounds more taxing than Zumba, which you’d rather be doing in the first place. He recommends replacing any cumbersome rules with new ones that are flexible, reasonable, healthy and truthful.If you’re looking to better understand your behavior when it comes to time management, goal setting and productivity, than I highly recommend reading Finish. It’s light, funny and easy to read with strong takeaways you can immediately act on.

As a motivational speaker I read this book to glean some knowledge to give my clients and it did not disappoint. I am big fan of Jon Acuff’s writing and this book is chock full of practical advice as opposed to another book full of platitudes. Jon challenges you to figure out what your roadblocks are and gives you practical ways to tackle them. Trying to lose 20 pounds? Cut that goal in half- lose 10 and then do it again! He also asks you to examine your « why » which I think is crucial in reaching goals. He also talks about the secret rules you have for yourself, e.g. “Success is bad” , “Skinny people are slutty” and asks you to examine what “limiting beliefs” you have that might be causing you to self-sabotage."Goals you refuse to chase don’t disappear, they become ghosts that haunt you."That’s the line that is really resonating for me. As a four time auditioner for NBC’s "The Voice" I love that it is referenced in the book, this last time I auditioned, I started thinking about the “reality” of what I was chasing, realized I don’t want to “catch” that so it “freed” me from chasing it down. Probably one of the most important reads of my adult life. Herman outlines the precise strategies used by top performers from the world of sports, politics, entertainment and more to become even more powerful on and off the field of play than they are innately.It's counter-intuitive and makes perfect sense. His historical examples of well-known achievers using the Alter Ego Effect are ample proof - if proof is needed - that this process for improved performance works and has done for millenia.While so many self-help books blindly suggest that you should step into an improved version of "you" (or more dangerously, that you are enough), Herman's book is the first one I've read to explain WHY a new version of you is going to be far more useful in life and specifically HOW to put that alter ego to play.Read this book.

In an incredibly relatable journey that guides you through the process to show up in every opportunity or situation in your life, (in ways what you know you are capable but struggle to overcome self doubt, family stories, or past trauma), this book is about to change the "field of play" for me in many ways.I’d heard about Alter Ego’s before from Todd Herman, and even put them into practice in my business, but Todd’s stories, examples and framework in the book for putting into practice these secret identities has shifted my view of how I can use DIFFERENT Alter Ego’s in the areas I struggle most.Interestingly, it’s not only “work” that I am challenged to show up how I need to, it’s at home, too.I’m on chapter 11 of the audio book right now, and can tell you, this book is a game changer for me as a mom, a wife and a leader.I'll be gifting this book to every member of my team, as well as friends and clients alike, because who can't use a little motivation to bring out the hero inside? So Good.

The main idea of this book is to get the reader to imagine themselves as a different character to get the results they want. It is written a bit too fluffy for my tastes (here's a story about Bob, Bob made this work, etc. like many self help books) but some may find the examples more useful, I skimmed most of them. That being said, I did find the techniques useful and an actively using them. What I find interesting though is that humans seem to have an innate capability to do this, perhaps schizophrenia is when this innate ability is in the far end of the spectrum, but normally it is useful and serves an evolutionary advantage!

The power of the Alter Ego Effect is brilliantly captured in this book. Todd Herman talks through how to use the power of your creative imagination so you can, within minutes, start to shape a narrative about you that serves you.As an athlete I've unknowningly used Alter Egos for years to perform on the hockey field. But by consciously going through Todd's Alter Ego process I've been able to launch a successful podcast, start a coaching practice and push myself outside my comfort zone. This has helped me achieve goals that I had forever though were just "good ideas".I'd highly encourage you to read this book and use Todd's principles to pull out the YOU whose capable of greatness.. whatever your Field of Play.

Full disclosure: I not only got an early copy, I helped Todd edit the book and even pushed him to actually finish it (like all first time authors, he was anxiopus about it).I don't have much to add to the book in terms of telling you whats in it, the other reviews cover that well. I just want to tell you that this is the first book of its type that has a truly original idea I've read in a LONG LONG time.Don't get me wrong--Todd did not invent the idea of alter egos, obviously. From Clark Kent back to the Muses, the ideas in the book are universal and timeless.But that's what makes this book so good, is that Todd is the first to really identify and explain them. Its like he's the guy teaching fish that they live in water.This book will, at a minimum, be a great read for you. But what most people will get from it will be a life-changing shift of perspective that creates some incredible breakthroughs (it did for me).

Full disclosure. I've been a fan and student of Todd Herman's 90 Day Year program for over a year now. His new book is so inspiring. Trust me, it's worth the read if you are ready to up your A game. Your Alter Ego isn't a fraud. It's YOU helping YOU perform at your best. It's you getting out of your own way. I know that one reason I resonate so strongly with Todd's take about alter egos is how much it correlates to my own views about our intuition, and why for too many, we lose touch with the importance our intuition plays in our hearts and minds, as well as our confidence and ability to not only believe we can do great things, but actually accomplish great things.

When I first heard about the concept of alter egos, I was intrigued. But I wondered if this would really apply to me, so I decided to read the book and find out. Every Last Word is not only an endearing love story, it is a fascinating peek into the mind of a girl with OCD. I couldn’t put it down!The thoughts Sam had, the secrets she kept, the adjustments she had to make every day of her life were truly a struggle for her, and it was amazing to see her journey through all of it.Her struggle with balancing two very separate and different groups of friends was so true to life. Tamara Ireland Stone captured this aspect of high school perfectly with her incredible writing. Every one of Sam’s emotions were felt and understood completely. Sam’s worry—her wish—to be “normal” was so heartfelt and honest that you wanted to just reach in and give her a hug.And the twists! Truthfully, I had a hunch about what was happening pretty early on, but there were still many surprises that I never saw coming. And my hunch did not affect my enjoyment of the story in any way. In fact, I think it enhanced it!Sam’s relationship with AJ was sweet perfection. I loved how they started on pretty rocky ground, but they worked through it and created a beautiful relationship from it. He loved her just as she was, even when she wasn’t sure how she felt about herself. His unwavering honesty was exactly what she needed.After reading this book, you will forever remember Every. Last. Word.

Before I give this review, I want to acknowledge that Tamara Ireland Stone is an extremely gifted and talented writer. She is a phenomenal storyteller. Like most, I found myself not being able to put this book down. My only criticism of the story is that it was unrealistic, but I guess that's what fiction is all about, yes? Try as I might, I just could not warm up to Samantha, the main character. The more I progressed into the story, the more my dislike for her increased. Long story short, Sam struck me as a spoiled, self-absorbed, pampered sixteen year old who had everything. She always seemed to be on the receiving end of life, giving nothing to others in return. Her chief obsession was...well....herself. It was just all about Sam, her thoughts, her feelings, and we never heard about what she might be doing to other people and how her ways might be affecting them and making their lives difficult. Sam appears to come from a wealthy family. She has a car. She's pretty, popular, and she hangs around other girls who also have money, looks, and popularity. Sam is on the swim team and hopes for a swimming scholarship. She has a mental illness which she is amazingly able to hide from everyone, including her closest friends. This is totally unrealistic. She has a psychiatrist who goes all out for her, even buying her presents and bringing her into her garden at home, covering her with a comforter, and bringing her hot tea to drink during one of her meltdowns. Come on. Is this reality? In real life, mental illness of any kind is bitter, raw, dark, ugly, and lonely. It's something that most people have to go through on their own. They certainly don't have all of the props, comfort, reinforcements, and networks that the main character had. I would have appreciated a book that was a little more realistic when it comes to mental illness and what it is really and truly like for those who struggle with it. In the real world, Sam's support network simply does not exist. You know it as well as I. The grim reality is that one of the reasons why those who suffer from mental illness are suffering so horribly is because most of them are being forced to go through it alone. We live in a world where nobody cares about anybody. Most relationships are shallow and superficial. If you're hurting, you're pretty much going to go through it alone. And yet, here is Sam, driving her expensive car at sixteen, going to top-notch spas, concerts, enjoying the good life, finding a poet's club filled with loving and caring characters that in reality don't exist anywhere except maybe in the Book of Acts, with numerous people to hold her hand, comfort her, and help her to get through. I'm sorry, but when you're dealing with the ugliness of mental illness of any type, I think it's important to paint a more realistic picture of life so that those who do suffer from it can feel like there is hope for them just as there was for Sam.Again, Ms. Stone is an incredible writer. I just feel that this particular story was too unrealistic for a subject as serious and life-threatening as mental illness. Mental illness is a reality for millions. But Sam's upscale life and her incredible reinforcement network is NOT. We need books to be published that will show the main character overcoming mental illness in spite of the fact that he or she does NOT have Sam's unrealistic life and reinforcement network. I think books like this will go a lot farther when it comes to giving others inspiration and hope because it's a reality that they can relate to and connect with.

CharactersSamantha: It might be difficult at first to know whether or not you're supposed to like Samantha. Sure she's the main character, but she's part of the "mean girl" clique at school. Usually we're led to believe that these girls are vain, shallow, and cruel to anyone that is not part of their group. While this may be true in the beginning for some of her friends, Samantha is actually a decent person, albeit one with a dark secret: she suffers from an obsessive disorder that makes life next to unbearable.I found her to be a ridiculously strong character. High school is difficult enough, but with a disorder like this and all the trouble that comes with it, she somehow manages to keep it a secret from her friends. Looking back on it, of course keeping a secret like this is terrible and her friends aren't worth if it they'd treat her badly because of it, but for someone in high school, image can be everything, so I understand how she felt regarding the situation.The Poet's Corner: these characters were all unique in their difficulties, but all brought together by their love of writing. In high school I would have given anything to have the comraderie they seem to share.Antagonist(s)This is sort of a difficult area because there wasn't a clear villain, exactly, though there were some "characters" that added to the difficulty of Samantha's journey.Mean Girls: these are the friends that Samantha has grown up with and fits in with the best, despite some of them being horrible people. They were a little cliche in their meanness, I'll admit. Samantha herself states that she doesn't agree fully with their bullying of other classmates, but she goes along with it out of peer pressure. I can't remember coming across someone in real life that was like Samantha in this instance. The bullies that I dealt with were jerks through and through, but in the story, at least there is hope for some of the girls. Even if they wouldn't turn out like this in real life, at least in fiction we can hope for the best and see it begin to come true.OCD: I am not very familiar with OCD as a realistic disease, so I am not sure to what degree what Samantha suffered is real. It was, however, presented in a overpowering and ever present way that made me believe, for the course of the book, that I could understand how Samantha was feeling, if only for a little bit.ImageryImagery wasn't a part of the novel that I really noticed as anything extraordinary, perhaps because it took place in the real world and it was an everyday sort of place, unlike if it were a fantasy novel. I knew, or at least could hazard a guess, what the place looked like without having to have it painted out for me.Plot/PacingI found the writing to be fairly streamlined. It was a fairly quick read. The prose was catchy enough to be interesting without too much going on, and it left off in good places at the end of chapters so that I wanted to continue.EndingThere was a fairly big surprise for Samantha toward the end that, while devastating, I was at least starting to guess midway through the book. It was an interesting choice for the author to make. In the course of the story I found it plausible, though a bit sad as the person involved in this revelation was a character that I had really felt happy with.SummaryThere are times when this novel can feel a bit dark because of the panic and terror that Samantha feels, but it is well worth the emotional journey that she and you as the reader will undertake.
