I worry a lot of the reviews of this book are not authentic. This cookbook is not good. At best, they are just ingredient lists...often completely leaving out instructions for the sides listed in the recipe titles. I also am suspect of the cooking times. 3 hours for a salmon filet at 136 degrees... very far from what’s listed in my Anova Sous Vide instruction book (the one that’s on the cover of this book). Just a very basic and confusing collection of ingredients...

This book was a total disappointment and real ripoff. It is poorly written, has poor explanations and feels like someone wrote it one afternoon on their computer and put no thought into the organization. I bought it because I purchased a Sous Vide cooker and believed the title ... it is a miss print ... should say," The In - complete cook book"!!

Extremely dissatisfied and disappointed. It was inexpensive but I still did not get what I paid for. I did not see one recipe I wanted to make or found helpful. Poorly edited, there is a cod recipe in the meat section.

I would not call this a complete sous vide cookbook. The author recommends putting all things to be sous vide into a ziplock back? Really? Although possible she also should have mentioned that the bag needs to be able to withstand the heat of the sous vide. She does have some great recipes like one for veal but there is no table of contents. Which there really should be.

First, I had no idea that you could use a straw method if you don't have a vacuum sealer! Second, these are recipies that you can actually follow. The ingredients are easy to find, most are inexpensive, and all recipes are perfect for a beginner. I finally made a perfect steak, which !my hubby was very happy about.

Strange book with strange recipies arranged in a strange manner. If you are looking for a go-to introductory book this is not it. Want to do a good, straightforward steak, it isn't there. Pork chops? Nope. And no pictures or helpful hints. I am not certain what the intended target audience is supposed to be. Useless for the beginner. And probaby more so for the experienced practicioner.

This is a terrible cookbook. Each recipe is just an ingredient and direction list. No comments or notes. No real content. No reason to believe that these are tested recipes by the “author”. At the very end there is a link to the “interactive” version which looks like the pages from the hardcopy plus photos. The photos of the food are clearly not photos of food prepared from these recipes as written. They look like stock photos of similar dishes. For instance, eggs and ham cooked in a bag (and that’s all there is to the recipe) ends up as a baked quiche in a crust in the photo. Based on the link at the end, the hard copy is no better than the kindle edition.

What a waste. Sent it back. It is not complete, some of it doesn't make sense, there are no pictures unless you download a PDF version, and the pictures don't match the recipes. Don't waste your money.

This morning between 3:30 AM and 5:30 AM I read the book. I marked pages. I lived those amazing experiences as a volunteer on 371, and am grateful I don't have to live them again. MK tells a painful, sad story with grace and wisdom and even humor. Everyone who will take their turn with death--and that means everyone-- will benefit from the stories of the living and loving that unfolded on Unit 371. They changed my life, too. Thank you, thank you, thank you for saying so much in a few powerful drawings.

This is a beautiful graphic novel about a very challenging period in history. It documents the experience of patients, doctors and nurses before the advent of effective retroviral therapy, when HIV/AIDs patients were treated like lepers. The illustrations are amazing, the oral histories documented profound. and the experience of the author - from student nurse to experienced nurse processing trauma and loss - is moving. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in the history of medicine and nursing, anyone studying or working in medicine and nursing, and anyone interested in pathographies. I just purchased another copy for a nurse in our family, But even if you have no specific interest in the subject matter of this book, it touches on themes that relate to any human being, like loss, compassion, community, discrimination, grief, coping, self-care and hope.And if you've never read a graphic novel before, this is such a great way to learn about huge histories and experiences. It surely must have taken years of work to put together something like this and the author deserves a rest, but I am really looking forward to seeing MK Czerwiec's other work!

Beautifully written and extremely moving. The story centers on a nurse's experience on an AIDS ward at the height of the AIDS epidemic. But the story reaches beyond these specific circumstances and explores how caregivers, friends, family, confront the death and dying of loved ones with a terminal diagnosis (which HIV was at that time), the different ways we grieve and how such experiences alter us forever.

I couldn't put down this thought provoking, beautiful graphic novel. My mother also worked in the health care industry in Chicago during this time period and lost half her friends. This helps me understand, theoretically, the emotional turmoil she endured. Thank you for speaking your truth in such a way that, through you, we can connect with others and learn about the extraordinary people in 371.

Beautiful, efficient writing and drawing tell this surprising inside story of life, yes, LIFE, in an AIDS unit at the height of the epidemic. A rookie nurse experiences the breakdown of barriers between patients and staff that happen when the professionals can't cure, but can offer real connection. Our hero undergoes her own seismic shift in the ensuing tale of love, loss and creativity, which results in this book, and much more.

"Taking Turns: Stories from HIV/AIDS Care Unit" is a graphic work by MK Czerwiec that describes her time working as a nurse in a dedicated AIDS unit at Illinois Masonic Hospital in Chicago. It is as much a story about the staff members and the volunteers as much as it is about the patients. The ward was most active during the years that an AIDS diagnosis meant certain death to those who contracted it. As the new protease inhibitors were developed in the mid-1990's, that death sentence was lessened and AIDS became for most a treatable disease. The AIDS ward, so busy in the 1980's and 1990's basically closed-up-shop and the patients went to the cancer wards if they needed treatment.What are graphic novels? According to Wikipedia, "A graphic novel is a book made up of comics content. Although the word 'novel' normally refers to long fictional works, the term 'graphic novel' is applied broadly and includes fiction, non-fiction, and anthologized work." I think this definition is important because more books are being published as "graphic" and the difference between a "written" book - particularly a memoir, as Czerwiec's work is considered - and a graphic is the intensity of the ideas being displayed by having both a written and drawn text. What MK Czerwiec writes and illustrates in "Taking Turns" brings the horrors of the illness, as well as the love and hope both given and received to the patient and his care givers."Taking Turns" is not a great work of art, but it is an honest - and loving - look at a hard period of time for many, many people.

This book is written in a wonderful style by a most informed author with a medical background. The graphics are terrific and usher you right through the very interesting story of a nurse working in a most sensitive and challenging unit. I highly recommend this book.

Another great buy for my recent nursing school graduate daughter! She will be working in an Aids/Hospice center. Great book!

On top of this, the book is a very easy read and has a lot of photos that help ensure that the user is properly practicing. I think it would be more useful if there was a DVD to accompany this because it would save all the time of having to go back to the book and would let the poses be seen in action to ensure they are executed to the end in the appropriate manner. There are a lot of clever ways to include pilates techniques in various practices. I also really appreciate the new routines. I have been practicing pilates for about 4 years and it has seriously eradicated my back pain. Part of that credit belong to Siler and this book. I recommend this to anyone who wants to try the discipline, but I would also recommend that they go to a pilates studio or buy a DVD to guarantee that the basic poses are correct while minimizing injury.

She moves on to using Pilates to maximize your athletic ability in the sports arenas of golf, tennis, skiing, and snowboarding.As with any book on the subject, this one serves as a great companion to any good Pilates instructional video---not being familiar with Siler's DVD "The Pilates Body Kit", I will strongly recommend Jennifer Kries "The Method Precision Toning" to introduce the novice to the Pilates format and continuous sequence of positions. Unless the reader/participant has had several hours worth of training with a one-on-one qualified Pilates instructor, I will recommend this book only as an adjunct rather than a stand-alone tool to take Pilates out of the studio and into your everyday life.Diana F. This book is the PhD level of Pilates. Brooke Siler doesn't dumb-down. Read, flag pages, highlight words, whatever you need to do to get going on this book and her other book too (The Pilates Body).I flagged the pages for 3 different days of workouts. So the top set of flags I did one day, the set of flags on the side of pages I did the second day, and set of flags on bottom of pages I do the third day. Then I rotate back to the 1st day of flags at the top of pages. Otherwise it would have seemed too grueling and arduous a workout. I can't be stuck on my living room floor for 8 hours a day. I gotta get this done in 45-minutes then get to work. Maybe you know what I mean. Pilates, like dance, could go on forever.This book provides the basis for a good workout, week after week, without getting bored. Anything that keeps you moving, no matter what level you use it at, is GOOD. You can use this at the beginner, intermediate or advanced level, and her pages indicate this too.

This book is really a sequel to her first book "The Pilates Body" although it could stand alone for people who are already familiar with the basics of Pilates.This book is unique in that it takes the principles of Pilates and applies them to working at home, in the gym, and in everyday life. The section on working at home includes incorporating exercise bands and other easily available equipment.The use of visualization and the emphasis on proper technique is another strong point. After looking at many books on Pilates, I have found those by Brooke Siler to be of the highest quality.

Great book - Brooke definitely knows what she is talking about

I recommend this book along with Siler's DVD. It offers information about Pilates practice. Lots of good advice for incorporating Pilates into daily activities and other "non-Pilates" exercise activities at the gym, at home and elsewhere. I think this book is at its best in combination with help from a trainer to really understand the exercises.

I checked it out from the public library one day and I wanted to purchase a copy of it. It is a great book. It has many different exercises to strengthen and tone your body whether you are at home, at the gym, at the office, or on the go. It includes simple things you can do, while performing everyday tasks.
