From the Author
This book was inspired by my grandmother, Rachel Shwartz. I didn't start to get to know my grandmother until after she died. When she was alive, I visited her multiple times, but we could never have a conversation. While she spoke Yiddish, Polish, Ukrainian, Hungarian, Romanian, and Hebrew, I only knew one language: English.I knew she was a Holocaust survivor. But like many children growing up in America, I didn't really understand what that meant. Of course, I learned about the Holocaust in school and by going to museums, but I couldn't really understand the magnitude of what it was.Unfortunately, my grandmother passed away in 2012--still years before I was ready or able to ask the questions about her experience. Thankfully, she--and several other surviving members of her family--had their stories recorded. Their testimonies are what led to this book.

I am a 98 years young great-grandmother who will be 99 in 2 months. I finished college in 1942. I have read many, many books on the Holocaust. During the war, we in the United States did not know the extent nor the viciousness of what the Nazis and their collaborators forced upon the Jewish people. Lately, I have been disappointed to learn that even though the Holocaust happened only 80 years ago, many young students today know nothing about the history of events leading up to the Holocaust nor are they aware of how calculated, widespread, and committed the Nazis were to their goal of eradicating the Jewish people. For these reasons, I recommend this book especially to young people who are ignorant about how ordinary peoples' lives were affected by these events. Most books tell the stories of people being forced into ghettos, going to the concentration camps, slaving under torturous conditions, and being sent to the gas chambers. This book gives us insight into those trying to hide and survive in small shtetls and towns, where finding food and safe shelter and living with fear and trepidation were ever-present realities. This book captured and kept my interest so that I finished it in one day. Despite my years and previous exposure to the events of the Holocaust, I learned much from this book. Its perspectives are unique and I hope it will stimulate others to explore their own family histories.
This book about how a family survived during the Holocaust by hiding and hiking in the woods in all kinds of weather, in barns, in shuls, in basements, in filth, and by never hesitating to ask for help, is a must read. Not often do we get such a Holocaust story – especially one written by a family member. I also loved how the author told her family’s story through several of their voices. In that way the reader gets a more rounded and fuller insight of what they were all going through. That they all survived is a miracle. As the author says:“Their will to live, and a bit a luck, kept the family safe during the Holocaust, bringing them across Eastern Europe all the way to Israel.â€
This book was a very tough read. Knowing that this story followed a real family and the struggles they faced made it more real than a fictional novel would have.Aviva is a beautiful writer. She manages to make the story flow, even when the topics are exceptionally difficult to read. The story follows many characters from their happy existence in Poland through their fight for survival as Hitler invaded country after country rounding up Jewish people (among others, of course). This family truly stayed one step ahead of the Nazis for many years, having MANY close calls that had me literally on the edge of my seat. While this book is full of depressing information, it has many moments of happiness and overwhelming bravery. My favorite thing was seeing the photos of the family in the book, I loved being able to put faces to the names.Overall, I would recommend this book!
In My Family's Survival, the author's Jewish grandmother and family escape the Germans by hiding in the forest, sneaking over borders, staying in barns or shacks and scavenging for food. It's amazing all they go through to survive and keep their family intact, sometimes apart and not knowing where the others are for months at a time. This is a well written book and their experience was described with such detail. Well done Aviva! I'm sure your family is so proud of this book and their story.
A truly amazing story! The life of a survivor through the worst of times. Must read!
An amazing survival story based on true events. Really liked the author's approach to telling the story from the various perspectives of the different family members. After finishing the book I was very interested in what ultimately happened to the family so appreciated the "Afterward."
“We were too lucky, always getting away in the nick of time, and always finding someone who was willing to help us, for who knows what reason.â€When they came for the Jews in the Polish city of Butla, the Shwartz family hadn’t believed it could happen. They decided to run and that sole decision saved all their lives. David and Hinda were raising three young children and their niece, Rachel, and enjoying farm life in their Polish village until the Russians and then Germans came. The family fled to Hungary, but peace there was short-lived. The family had to separate at times to survive, yet David was always watching to make sure they didn’t get captured. My Family’s Survival is a true story about the author’s grandmother (Rachel) and her relatives survival during the Holocaust. Aviva grew up knowing her grandmother was a survivor of those times, but her grandmother would not talk about it to anyone. As she got older, she started researching and found recordings and writings that pieced together the family’s story of survival. I found this book through Instagram when the author contacted me about a book she was writing. I was given a free copy of the book in exchange for a fair review.David, Hinda and their youngest are captured one day, leaving Rachel to care for the other two children. Rachel finds a woman in the village to take them in while David, Hinda and the baby are moved from jail to jail to jail – no one really knowing to do with them. Finally, they are released and David finds Rachel. Soon after that, the children are sent to an orphanage to be kept safe possibly with Christian families. Then, there is talk of escaping into Romania. Years of cold and starvation start taking their toll on their bodies, but David pushes them to find safety in a new country. My Family’s Survival reads like most historical fiction books from this time period, but it’s all true. I’m amazed at how this family ended up all surviving after the separations, sicknesses and bombings. The book shows how offering help to those in need can make a huge difference in a family’s future. I highly recommend this book to anyone high school age or older. Lovers of historical fiction should pick this up to read some of the true history of the Holocaust.
