Review

"Alex Lickerman mines life's greatest challenges with an artist's eye, a scientist's rigor and a Buddhist's wise hand. The result is a book that I could not stop reading. Alex's unique gifts as a writer, doctor and scientific thinker make for an epiphany-studded quest to tame his own mind and to commune with the minds of others. He has produced a book that is profound, compassionate, and triply inspiring."--Kaja Perina, editor-in-chief, Psychology Today"Buddhism and Western medicine would seem an incongruous mixture, but in the hands of Alex Lickerman they meld seamlessly into a recipe for overcoming life's hardships―indeed, for turning them into advantages.  An accomplished physician, Lickerman has no truck for the supernatural, but recognizes that the tenets of Nichiren Buddhism have been honed over centuries to help alleviate life's inevitable sufferings. The Undefeated Mind is a deeply engaging story of how Lickerman has fused modern medicine with ancient wisdom to heal his patients both physically and psychologically―lessons that apply to all of us."    --Jerry Coyne, professor of Ecology and Evolution at University of Chicago and author of Why Evolution is True"Eastern religious practices such as chanting are often brushed aside as 'mysticism' by Western science. In this highly original book based on extensive case studies, Lickerman effectively bridges these two great traditions, providing novel insights along the way on how we can all triumph over the psychological impact of adversity and live joyfully, even in this 'vale of tears.'"--V. S. Ramachandran, director of the Center for Brain and Cognition at University of California San Diego and author of the New York Times bestseller The Tell-Tale Brain"Dr. Lickerman's wisdom and compassion are evident on every page of this outstanding book. Inspired by his many years of practice in the Nichiren Buddhist tradition, Dr. Lickerman, a practicing physician, sets forth nine principles for developing an 'undefeated mind.' An undefeated mind is not a passive mind that is sometimes associated with Buddhism. It is a mind that never gives up the search for solutions to life's inevitable obstacles. It is a mind that knows that peace and happiness are attainable even in the midst of hardships, such as rejection, illness, and loss. It is a mind that treats adversity as an opportunity for growth. By sharing personal stories of how he and his patients have benefited from these nine principles, Dr. Lickerman turns them into easy-to-apply tools that everyone can put to use immediately. Incorporating the nine principles of The Undefeated Mind into your everyday life will open the door to limitless compassion for others and to unshakeable happiness for yourself. This profound book has the power to change your life." ―Toni Bernhard, author of How to Be Sick: A Buddhist-Inspired Guide for the Chronically Ill and Their CaregiversThe Undefeated Mind: On the Science of Constructing an Indestructible Self Alex Lickerman. HCI Books, $15.95 trade paper (288p) ISBN 978-0-7573-1642-5     When life brings adversity such as profound loss or illness, we may sometimes feel defeated and powerless to change either the circumstance or our emotional response. Physician and blogger Lickerman tells us that things are only as bleak as they seem, and, using actual conversations with his patients, reveals the process of achieving an "inner life state" that mitigates suffering. More than presenting just a good theory or interesting stories, he interweaves compelling scientific research and core tenets of Nichiren Buddhism to flesh out this inner life state: nine central principles that moderate physical and emotional pain. The point of easing suffering is "not for solving problems but for establishing a life state that makes all problems solvable." The interplay of dialogue, narrative, science, and faith flows effortlessly, interrupted only by thought-provoking observations such as "research suggests that the more we use our willpower, the weaker it becomes," and "our expectations profoundly influence our responses to our experiences." The principles are well constructed and the book well written; the author not only describes an undefeated mind but also teaches the thinking that yields one. Agent: Stephany Evans. (Nov.) (Publishers Weekly Publishers Weekly)"One of my favorite new books is The Undefeated Mind.  It's a powerful book that helps you cultivate your inner strength to face hard times with a fearless heart. It's more than a book. It's a set of tools for life."--J.D. Meier, Sources of Insight

A few months ago, I experienced strange symptoms of illness that couldn't not be diagnosed. With it, bouts of indescribable fear of dying came. Some were so powerful, I wouldn't let myself go to sleep for fear of not waking up. One morning, I couldn't get out of bed and take care of my family (two teens). But I had to, I couldn't let this destroy me. I kept thinking, 'I'm alive now, aren't I? What's the problem then?' For a while I thought about taking the anti anxiety pill Ativan prescribed by my physician. Before I did that, I just Googled 'Fear of death after sickness'. Dr. Lickerman's article in Psychology Today popped up and I swallowed every word... it resonated with what I was feeling so strongly, I was stunned. I felt an immediate connection to the story and the author. I am a nurse, he's a physician. Both from Healthcare. I implement EMR, he did too. He's scared of death, brought on by illness, so am I! He's a Buddhist, and I have been using meditation, Buddhist derived ideology for years to self heal and find answers to existential questions.... Anyway, I read some of his blogs on his website, saw the book cover which was pretty much an exact copy of a painting I just planned to paint and the rest is history. Downloaded his book, started reading, never took the Ativan (prefer not to treat with medication unless I have to), got out of bed to make breakfast. Reading Undefeated Mind was just the medicine I needed. I am not cured of fear of death, I'm not sure I ever will be, but I am alive, enjoying every moment. Every morning and every breath is a gift. Every heartbeat is joyful and I'm humbled to have the opportunity to have the human experience. Thank you Dr. Lickerman for the rippling effect!

This book has helped me beyond measure to deal with some VERY difficult times. As I continue to read i pick up more and more tips on how to handle adversity, but more than that, it has changed my mindset on the whole process of "suffering", and how it isn't really necessary or advantageous to go through suffering at all. It feels like, rather than just reading words, I'm traveling down a well-scripted path that reveals a whole new way of processing and reacting to things. It's not just optimism, .....or positive mindset. While reading you experience aa change I can't fully describe (yet). But don't get me wrong,...there are concrete tools and strategies that give you some of what you need to......not only get through things, but to draw the very most from the experience in a way that really does help you grow from it. John F. Kennedy, claimed that when written in Chinese, the word crisis consisted of two symbols, one representing danger and the other opportunity..(It turns out he wasn't totally correct, but that's besides the point. Crisis, roadblocks, or whatever you want to call them ....truly do have something to teach you, a way to add our life if you don't fall into the trap of feeling sorry for yourself. There are nine steps on the road to resiliency and s stronger self. Time to go read the rest....

I'm not new to the material or ideas in this book. However, I did find it well written, and worth the time, money, and effort to read. I liked it so much I plan to read it again. He gives lots of practical examples, and advice in stories that are relatable. I didn't find his writing style redundant or repetitive like some authors in the self-help genre.

I have to say... I love Nichiren Buddhism and I love this book. So beyond inspirational! What I would do to have Dr Lickerman as my doctor — he really is good at giving perspective. I will recommend to anybody and will most likely read again and again through the years. Powerful. Even if you aren’t practicing Buddhism it gives some powerful insight and facts. Love!

Book was recommended by a friend. Hesitant at first. And it took a few chapters to get into it... but once I did, I discovered it is full of great, practical wisdom! Life changing! The author is a Nichiren Buddhist. But he is also a doctor. So through out the book he takes buddhist principles and explains them through real world examples involving his patients and clinical studies. Fascinating. Especially for those with a more logical mind who may find it difficult to accept the more esoteric principles of eastern philosophy.

This book has So many gems to take with you through life that you can apply. Dr.Lickerman uses his personal experiences and pulls from stories of some of his patients to guide/teach you how to create your own undefeated mind. We all have baggage but we have to work through our stuff and as Dr.lickerman said "never be defeated" It was worth reading in my opinion.

The headline pretty much sums up my opinions. I found the stories about his patients really boring, and there were a LOT of pages dedicated to them. Also, there were WAY too many references to psychological studies.

Im on pg 58 right now and just had to stop to make sure this book had great ratings in here. Gladly it does! This is just an amazing book, ive read several self help books and read articles along with many motivational videos but this books gets you to the core where no other book ive read has done. Book feels like im watching a series on netflix you just want keep on watching/keep on reading bc it gets better and better.book is worth the investment!
