The captions are too meager for readers to get the most out of pictures. The writing is often confusing. In the history section, while Brill highlights leaders from different periods, there are so many other names and facts that important themes in Algerian history, such as the significance of the trans-Saharan trade and the reasons for the loss of Muslim dominance in the Mediterranean to the Europeans, are lost. The chapter on Islam, which stresses holidays and rituals, misses the meanings that make the religion loved. The book's appearance and simple sentences suggest a 4th- to 8th-grade audience, but sometimes the discussion is filled with unexplained abstractions difficult even for senior-high students. There's not many books on Algeria but this kids' book (age 9-12) gives the reader an instant feel for the land with loads of color photos of cities and deserts, chapters on Islam, everyday life, history and current affairs among others. I was really impressed with it
